Review Herald Recordings - 1954 / Lightnin Hopkins:

When Lightnin' Hopkins tore it up, he tore it up good, as this collection of sessions from 1954 attests. "Hopkins' Sky Hop" alone is worth the price of admission, a delightful uptempo instrumental piece that walks the line between blues and rock & roll. At the other end of the tempo spectrum, there's "Sick Feelin' Blues," not to mention "Lightnin' Don't Feel Well," which has the pace of a slowly flowing river and the mood to match. Mood is one of the blues' greatest strengths, and it's something that Hopkins understood very well; there's real bitterness in "Don't Think 'Cause You're Pretty" and a reflective feeling to "Sittin' Down Thinkin'. " These recordings were made between the two main peaks in Hopkins's popularity and so were relatively unknown at the time, but they're beyond a doubt worth hearing. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Live from Carnegie Hall / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

The series of Stevie Ray Vaughan concert albums that began with Live Alive (1986) and continued after the guitarist's 1990 death is far from the catalogue-bloating cash-in you'd expect from the record company of a platinum seller cut down at a career peak. Instead, each disc gives a distinctly different view of the Texas blues-rocker's stage strengths. Where Live Alive captured Vaughan and his band Double Trouble in full arena roar and In the Beginning recorded a looser early club gig, Live at Carnegie Hall finds the outfit broadening its range with guest shots from Dr. John and the Roomful of Blues horn section. Rather than overpowering Vaughan's signature tautness, the bigger band makes for an entertaining switch-in effect allowing a fresh look at his R&B roots. -Rickey Wright The series of Stevie Ray Vaughan concert albums that began with Live Alive (1986) and continued after the guitarist's 1990 death is far from the catalog-bloating cash-in you'd expect from the record company of a platinum seller cut down at a career peak. Review Herald Recordings - 1954, Volume 2 / Lightnin' Hopkins:

The second set of recordings for Herald from 1954 includes some great material, much of it illustrating how Lightnin' Hopkins incorporated other styles of the day into his own. The influence of John Lee Hooker is audible, especially on "Boogie Woogie Dance" (the title's sort of a giveaway) and "Don't Need No Job," and certain songs, notably "Let's Move" and "Lightnin's Special," border on rock & roll. Pleasant surprises include two tracks with Ruth Ames on vocals: "Finally Met My Baby" and "That's Alright Baby. " These sessions took place before the folk resurgence of the 1960s carried Hopkins to fame for the second time, and there's something about them that feels more authentic than his later work, for all that they show the changing trends of the time. -Genevieve Williams.
