Review Live from Carnegie Hall/Live from Austin Texas: +DVD / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

The series of Stevie Ray Vaughan concert albums that began with Live Alive (1986) and continued after the guitarist's 1990 death is far from the catalogue-bloating cash-in you'd expect from the record company of a platinum seller cut down at a career peak. Instead, each disc gives a distinctly different view of the Texas blues-rocker's stage strengths. Where Live Alive captured Vaughan and his band Double Trouble in full arena roar and In the Beginning recorded a looser early club gig, Live at Carnegie Hall finds the outfit broadening its range with guest shots from Dr. John and the Roomful of Blues horn section. Rather than overpowering Vaughan's signature tautness, the bigger band makes for an entertaining switch-in effect allowing a fresh look at his R&B roots. -Rickey Wright The series of Stevie Ray Vaughan concert albums that began with Live Alive (1986) and continued after the guitarist's 1990 death is far from the catalog-bloating cash-in you'd expect from the record company of a platinum seller cut down at a career peak. Review Greatest Hits Vol.1 / Bobby 'Blue' Bland:

Bobby Bland's purr-to-a-scream vocals quickly made him an R&B star in an era when rougher-hewn blues masters such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf had fallen from the charts. Bland, a former valet for B. B. King, established himself with both up-tempo workouts ("Farther Up the Road," "I Pity the Fool") and devastatingly subtle ballad readings ("I'll Take Care of You," "Stormy Monday Blues"). Greatest Hits, Vol. One is a generous sampling of the discs that made him a steady seller throughout the '60s. A second CD chronicles his work in the '70s after Duke Records, his longtime label, was sold to ABC. -Rickey Wright.

Review Texas Flood / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

This legendary 1983 debut by the fallen torchbearer of the 1980s-90s blues revival sounds even more dramatic in its remixed and expanded edition. Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar and vocals are a bit brighter and more present on this 14-track album. Texas Flood captures Vaughan as rockin' blues purist, paying tribute in his inspired six-string diction to his influences Larry Davis (who wrote the title track), Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Jimi Hendrix. His own contemplative "Lenny", a tribute to his wife at the time, also suggests a jazz-fuelled complexity that would infuse his later work. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Greatest Hits Vol.2 / Bobby 'Blue' Bland:

Bobby Bland's uptown, brass-and-strings-drenched blues kept him on the charts long after gut-bucket kings such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters had dropped from black-radio airwaves. The artistic successes chronicled on this second volume of his greatest hits shouldn't come as a surprise, then, despite the frequent input of ultracommercial producer Steve Barri, who'd crafted AM hits for acts as diverse as the Grass Roots and the post-Motown Four Tops. Even with some accommodations to trends (the disco beat of "The Soul of a Man," chicken-scratching guitars here, there, and everywhere), Bland kept on being Bland, cutting country songs ("Today I Started Loving You Again") and blues standards ("Goin' Down Slow") and investing Dan Penn's "I Hate You" with a unique pungency. This disc performs a valuable service in lifting the veil from an often-overlooked period in the career of one of American music's most important interpretive singers. -Rickey Wright.

Review Hound Dog - The Essential Collection / Big Mama Thornton:

The classic "Hound Dog" is usually associated with Elvis Presley, but blues fans know: Presley's recording wasn't the first. That honor belongs to singer Big Mama Thornton, whose own recording of "Hound Dog" was eclipsed by Presley's. Her version is on this collection in all its glory, opening a CD of 18 killer tracks. Thornton's voice, by turns growling and richly melodic, was indeed unusual, and the spare accompaniment on Hound Dog makes it stand out all the more on songs such as "They Call Me Big Mama," "How Come," "The Big Change," "Hard Times," and "The Fish. " Thornton had talent and attitude to spare, and both come through loud and clear on this essential collection. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Soul to Soul / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

Arguably the finest blues guitarist of his generation, Wisconsin-born Stevie Ray Vaughan initially learnt his chops on his brother-and Fabulous Thunderbirds' mainstay-Jimmie's hand-me-down guitars whilst glued to the works of Albert King and Lonnie Mack. After honing his skills in the late 70s with a variety of lacklustre combos, he was headhunted by David Bowie for 1983's Let's Dance tour, but left early to concentrate on his solo work. On this, his third album, Vaughan's virtuosity is both augmented and accentuated by Double Trouble, a backing band of rare competence, finally allowed to shine after having played a singularly supportive role to Stevie on earlier efforts. From the throbbing mid-tempo blues grooves of "Say What", through the barroom shuffle of "Look At Little Sister" to the head-spinning, flying-finger dexterity of "Empty Arms", Soul To Soul stands as a fitting epitaph to a true master of the blues. -Ian Fortnam.

Review Couldn't Stand the Weather: Remastered / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

In a brief interview that precedes this CD's four bonus tracks-all unreleased gems from the original 1984 sessions-Stevie Ray Vaughan makes the point that "music used to be more based on common everyday occurrences like a train's sound going down the track. a horse walking. " Then he comes on with a version of Freddie King's "Hideaway" that chugs like a locomotive. There's also a heretofore unheard slide-guitar-powered "Give Me Back My Wig" and a blueprint of what became Soul to Soul's US radio hit "Look at Little Sister". All those follow the improved mixes of the original CD, which include Vaughan's heartbreak chronicles "Couldn't Stand the Weather" and "Cold Shot"; his first jazzer, "Stang's Swang"; and his initial Hendrix outing, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)". It's the sound of the guitar hero growing as an artist on his own terms-sidestepping the irony that poisoned 1990s rock to stay true to the real-life aesthetic of the blues. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review The Very Best of Lightnin' Hopkins: Blues Masters / Lightnin' Hopkins:

Hopkins may have enjoyed unprecedented world-wide popularity as a blues and folk artist during the 1960s, but his best work was mostly recorded in the previous two decades. This Rhino selection, put together by James Austin, culls tracks recorded for labels such as Aladdin, Sittin' In With, Gold Star, Jax, Folkways and Bluesville, from 1946 to 1961. Specialists will want the complete Gold Star and Aladdin material in particular, but this is a fine sampling of Hopkins in a variety of settings most typical of his career. The 1946 "Katie May Blues" documents his early partnership with pianist Thunder Smith (hence the nickname "Lightnin'" for plain Sam Hopkins) and also shows why he felt the need to strike out on his own soon after. For most of his life Lightnin' preferred playing as a solo, and his uncanny, tersely moving guitar accompaniment for his stark, often cryptic vocals shows that this was a wise as well as economically ideal choice. The brooding "Automobile", from 1949, drives this point nicely home. In a well-balanced selection, two of the four 1961 tracks feature Sonny Terry. -Keith Shadwick.

Review In Step / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

In Step embraces blues and rock without compromising the primal joys of either. This is Stevie Ray Vaughan's best studio album and the first he recorded sober. "Travis Walk" offers a heady rush of flat-picking, "The House is Rockin'" is full-tilt roots- boogie, "Let Me Love You Baby" and "Leave My Girl Alone" are sweet blues epiphanies and the nine-minute instrumental "Riviera Paradise" is a truly soulful mix of blues and jazz. By this stage, just a year before his untimely death, Vaughan had also tamed his bawling voice into a rich instrument. In short, this 1989 session is Vaughan at his artistic peak. It's raw blues-rock perfection. -Ted Drozdowski.
