Review The Three Tenors in Paris / Decca:If you think you've heard it all, you're wrong. The three big guys are indeed back, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with a rabidly enthusiastic crowd to welcome them. They sing many favourites- "Granada", "Because", "Nessun Dorma"-and there are a pair of medleys: one devoted to love songs and one called Medley of the World which ends with a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that might just bring tears to your eyes. If the truth be known, the three tenors have put on eight years since we first heard them together and a fair amount of bloom is off their rose-like voices-with Domingo's ardency sounding a bit hard-edged, Carreras' tone even more spread than before, and some of Pavarotti's gold tarnished and his breath shorter. Suffice it to say that older CDs by these three formerly-really-great tenors are worth their weight in gold, compared to the bronze you'll find here. But the classy James Levine at the helm keeps the "event" going with passion and it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement. -Robert Levine.

Review Schubert: Complete Lieder, Vol.34 / Schubert Edition:The Hyperion Schubert edition has moved into its final phase-surveys of songs not yet covered arranged by period. The years 1817-21 were some of the most productive of Schubert's short life-he left home and lived with friends, possibly lovers, was briefly arrested by the secret police and started to be recognised as a real force in Viennese music. Among the high points of this disc of songs, part songs and a chamber cantata are Thomas Hampson's dangerous, dreamy peformance of "Atys", a setting of a poem about sexual ambiguity and ambivalence by Schubert's room-mate Mayrhofer and Christopher Maltman's delicate rendering of the well-known "Wanderer's Nightsong". Philip Langridge is charming in "Die Einsiedelei" with its sense of the need for pastoral retreat. The various part songs, in which singers as well-known as Ian Bostridge and John-Mark Ainsley put in guest appearances, make relaxing interludes between masterpieces. Graham Johnson's commentary in the accompanying booklet is as helpful and intelligent as his piano accompaniment. -Roz Kaverney.

Review The Sound of Classic FM / London Philharmonic Orchestra:Putting together a compilation of classical music and branding it with the Classic FM logo guarantees sales. The Sound of Classic FM, a neatly-packaged three-CD set, comes hot on the heels of such top-selling compilations as Relax and Hall of Fame 2000, and the more recent Relax More. The tracklisting reads like a typical Classic FM schedule-in with such staples as Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, Rossini's William Tell Overture, the final movement of Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 and, that old chestnut, "Nessun Dorma!". There are a few less well-known pieces which have been added to the station's playlist, such as the divine slow movement from Spohr's Clarinet Concerto No. 1, "Judex" from Gounod's Mars et Vita and Parry's rousing choral piece I Was Glad. The enclosed booklet contains brief notes on each of the 28 pieces but with no performer credits although the box itself boasts such names as Nigel Kennedy, Yehudi Menuhin, Lesley Garrett and José Carreras. So, if you're a fan of Classic FM and want to hear more than three hours of music from the last three centuries or so-without the adverts-then this is for you. -Rebecca Agnew.

Review Fischer-Dieskau - The Mastersinger / Deutsche Grammophon:This generous double-CD compilation gives a remarkable overview of the career of one of the greatest voices of the century. The earliest recording is from 1960, when Fischer-Dieskau was 35, the latest from 1978-and it's fascinating to hear the way in which his voice loses a little of its shimmer and gloss but gains an amazing velvety broadness and richness over this 18-year period. Though there are some Lieder at the end of disc 2 (all Schubert) the tracks are mostly operatic arias and ensembles. This is another big plus in the set's favour: not only do you get to hear Fischer-Dieskau at his prime, but plenty of other great singers as well. The foremost Arabella of recent times, Lisa della Casa, can be heard in that role, as can Gwyneth Jones as Salome, as well as Christa Ludwig, Placido Domingo and Gundula Janowitz in a host of other parts. Some of the excerpts are simply terrific: Karajan's "Entry of the Gods into Valhalla" from 1968 is spine-tingling, partly because Fischer-Dieskau's voice is placed in front of the sound, which gives an effect both of command and dislocation. This is two hours of heaven. -Warwick Thompson.
