Review Escm / BT:ESCM, the second album from Washington DC-based producer Brian Transeau (aka BT), is proof-if any were needed-of the musical worth of dance music. Transeau started out as a classically trained musician, before turning his hand to house music in the early 1990s. This traditional background shines through on ESCM, with progressive house and trance rhythms being given string overdubs and sound washes reminiscent of Brian Eno or other avant garde ambient artists. "Flaming June" is an almost perfect club anthem, while "Remember", featuring the vocals of Jan Johnston, mixes breakbeats into BT's lush soundsape. Transeau manages to pull off huge changes in genre-from drum & bass (the breathtaking "Road to Lostwithiel" and "Orbitus Terranium") to dirty grunge (the confusing "Solar Plexus")-whilst still retaining a beautifully layered trademark sound. This is a great album, and one which can be savoured by club heads and armchair listeners alike. -Matt Anniss.

Review Electro Glide in Blue / Apollo 440:Unfairly dismissed by much of the electronica cognoscenti-too commercial, some sniffed: too calculated-this was, nevertheless, an ambitious (and mostly satisfying) attempt to fuse the volume and density of rock with the broad textural vocabulary of electronica. The single, "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Dub," effectively defined the template, marrying a corrosive Van Halen guitar sample to chattering breakbeats; the remainder of the album was divided between variations on this theme (the slide guitar propelling "Altamont Super-Highway Revisited," the bluesy shuffle of "Tears Of The Gods"), and moments of almost meditative stillness, courtesy of the group's other incarnation, the Stealth Sonic Orchestra. The most accomplished of the latter is a ballad titled "Pain In Any Language," which features the last recorded vocal of late Associates frontman Billy MacKenzie, to whose memory this bold and singular album is dedicated. -Andrew McGuire.

Review Pause / Four Tet:Kieran Hebden is, it has to be said, something of a genius. The groundwork for Pause was laid on Dialogue-his debut solo album under the guise of Four Tet-landed in 1999, and immediately went about redrawing the parameters of inventive dance music. A peculiar mix of live-sounding instrumental jazz and technologically super-precise laptop dance trickery, it sounded nothing like Hebden's actual group-his day job is spent toiling in occasionally inspired post-rockers Fridge-and, as it happened, very little like anything else in existence. While not as radical a statement as Dialogue seemed, Pause is a definite update-a second brave step into the great beyond; where Dialogue employed jazz sax and flute in its evocation of a 21st-century jazz meltdown, Pause goes even further, coiling whispers of harp and zither over layer-on-layers of fidgeting, rattling percussion. His inspirations? Well, like his friend and protégé, Canadian tech-wizard Manitoba (whose excellent Start Breaking My Heart is easily the equal of Pause), Hebden collects sounds and melodies from a dizzying array of places-ancient British folk music, the rattle of typewriter keys, the gurgle of running water, even a field recording of a children's playground. Review Ministry of Sound - the Annual 2005 [2CD + DVD] / Various Artists:As another year of clubbing comes to an end and we look on to new years '05, Ministry of Sound document a snapshot of '04 with their latest annual instillation The Annual 2005. The MOS Annuals have become more pop-centric since 2000 and this album is no exception. Thankfully, they appear to have walked the right side of the tightrope between crowd-pleasers and radio wish-wash this time around. Once again, this is a three disk box set release spanning 61 tracks. The cherry on top is that the third disk is a DVD showing some fantastic video clips. The first CD, the better of the two, includes some great tunes from the year gone by. Spankox's "To the Club" really represents and should have been the opening track. Another fantastic remix from Timo Maas, Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" is another highlight. The second disk tends to be a little watery and unfortunately includes the truly dire reworking of "Sweet Child of Mine". Kontakt's remix of "Sweet Dreams" has a little more soul to it. [+]And Khia's decidedly cleaner version of "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)" is a great edition. The same old gripes can still be had on this Annual. There are a few tunes that are plain annoying and the track placement hasn't been thought about carefully enough. Also, there are moments of mixing that are just downright poor. On the whole though this is a good addition to the collection. Yes, it's like listening to Dave Pearce on Radio 1 but if you know that before you buy then you shouldn't be disappointed. -Jarrod Rendle.

Review 76:14 / Global Communication:Understood in any language, across any time zone, Global Communication tolls for the human spirit which knows no boundaries. As one of the most significant releases to cross the ambient currents of the 1990s, 76:14 places itself alongside benchmark electronic releases from Brian Eno, the Orb, and the Future Sound of London. These synth-dominated ventures allow the armchair traveller to indulge in atmospheric wanderings which suggest virtual galactic discovery. But often enough the textured beats keep things grounded to dissuade the listener from being lost in the void. Vocal samples from nine languages also remind us of the international and diplomatic intentions of this otherwise electro-instrumental album. Review Lovebox / Groove Armada:Tom Findlay and Andy Cato have steadily been dismantling their chill-out crown ever since the single "At The River" saw them float into coffee-table ubiquity. Lovebox finally stretches the duo's eclectic tastes beyond any semblance of continuity or restraint, finishing the job started on last year's Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub). Named after Groove Armada's bi-monthly London club night, the duo's fourth album captures the excitement and diversity of pace you would expect from a masterful DJ set. While the opening track "Purple Haze" doesn't have a sniff of Hendrix's majestic histrionics, it is certainly Groove Armada's most rock & roll moment to date. Neneh Cherry lends her sultry voice to the lusty funk-fuelled hip-hop of "Groove Is On" and the urban soul of "Think Twice", and "Remember", with its languorous beat and swirling effects, nods toward their down-beat prime. Feisty dance-floor shakers are here in force though. "Madder", mixing the raps of MC M. A. D. with a pulsating bass and itchy guitar hook, kicks hard, and "The Final Shakedown" is an undiluted house anthem, albeit with a feisty ragga vocal. [+]But one of the most surprising tracks is the rich, soul-drenched sophistication of "Hands of Time", a gorgeous reflection on love lost featuring the spine-tingling voice of Woodstock folk legend Richie Havens. Lovebox is a disarmingly eclectic album, its infectious, maverick, party spirit defying preconceptions. -Christopher Barrett.
