Review Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5 / Alec Empire:Part easy listening, part space jazz and pervaded by a self-deprecating, freeform melancholia, the skewed melodies and skip-jack rhythms of HyperModern Jazz 2000. 5 reveal a rarely-seen goofy side to Alec Empire. "Get Some" is a slice of hypnotic interstellar gothic that leads into the cheesy-funk of "I'm Gonna Die If I Fall Asleep", which sounds like the kind of music you'd find in a 30th Century Rollerdisco. A blustery bassline and heavily phased beats come to the fore on "God Told Me How To Kiss". A similar feel props up "My Funk Is Useless", a self-conscious, ham-fisted attempt at fusion. Woozy sub-bass disorientates the clean jazz melodic slide of "Many Bars And No Money". Empire makes like Dr Phibes on "Dreaming Is a Form Of Astral Travel", a final cut where the sole instrument is a multi-layered B-Movie organ that builds deliriously, boosted by reverb that reaches to the heavens. -Chris Campion.
