Review FABRICLIVE23: Death in Vegas / Death In Vegas:Death In Vegas frontman Richard Fearless is known for his love of gnarly sounds, film soundtracks and muscular riddims. Here, he presents the latest Fabriclive, which gives him the opportunity to explore all those themes throughout a mix that could well be one of the best instalments of the series. Starting out with Solvent's acidic statement, "Science With Synthesisers", Fearless takes the listener on a psychedelic and filmic tour of that pulses and bucks to form an ever-morphing electronic tapestry. DIV's Kraftwerkian soundtrack "Zuguga" leads into the pulsing abstraction of Slacknoise Vs Plexus' "Ana Tak 2"; Mossa's sinewy "Cheap Therapy" is matched to the seminal electro of Cybotron's "Alley Of Your Mind"; and there are 303s aplenty with Dinky's "Acid In My Fridge" and DIV's experimental "Reigen". Mellifluously mixed, this selection marries a gleeful excess with soothing cinematics in a hugely appealing way. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Movement in Still Life / BT:The many imitators inspired by his epic, luscious debut, Ima, have pushed Brian Transeau to become more experimental and diverse in recent years. Movement In Still Life picks up where he left of with ESCM,throwing styles like drum'n'bass and, particularly, nu skool breakz into his progressive/deephouse confection. Movement switches these influences around, often meshing them together on tracks like "Ride" and "Madskillz-Mic Chekka". Elsewhere he goes all Armand Van Helden on "The Hip-Hop Phenomenon" before returning to his roots on numbers like "Godspeed" and "Dreaming". Review Clubber's Guide to 2000: Mixed By Judge Jules / Judge Jules:Compilations of this kind featuring artists of the moment such as Paul Van Dyk, Oliver Lieb and Michael Moog pick at the difference between music for your stereo and music for the DJ. Almost every track in this double-CD box set was a monster club hit in 1999-designed for late-night sessions and dancefloor pressure. Although Judge Jules is a technically proficient mixer and avoids the monotony of most 4/4 tech-trance with a few masterful tempo changes, at home they sound pretty much the same from track to track. Even those that begin with complex layers of shimmying house and soul segue into furious "trance nation" explosions. From Basement Jaxx's "Jump 'n' Shout", this very cutely packaged collection really begins to ignite a powerful groove, moving away from the bland, bouncing, grinning rhythms of trance to funk things up with ragga and electro. A few songs are worth being played over and over again especially "That Sound", "Back to the Funk" and "Feeling this way", but the full intoxicating power of a track like "Iguana" won't be apparent unless you're in a pulsating room with a few hundred gyrating strangers burning up the dancefloor. -Felix Obi Zuze.
