After the huge critical success of Musik and Sheet One and a justified reputation as one of the best live techno acts ever, Plastikman's third album is a move away from the dancefloor. An alias for Canadian technohead and co-founder of Detroit label +8 Richie Hawtin, Plastikman has created the soundtrack for surveillance videos. Incredibly dark and atmospheric, Hawtin plays with the empty places in your head. Electronic noises echo through space as if in barren warehouses. Melodic acid lines drift over never-ending beats in the eerily bleak "Locomotion" and "Contain". This intense music is best heard in quiet isolation, not before a night out on the tiles. -Ed Potton.

Review Goodbye Swingtime / Matthew Herbert Big Band:

Matthew Herbert is that rara avis in dance music: a producer capable of having great ideas and concepts and putting them into action effectively. Goodbye Swingtime follows on from his recent Bodily Functions album and anti-corporate Radioboy project, he returns with an album that combines the sound of Big Band jazz with some deep political statements. The musical framework of the album was arranged by Peter Wraight and recorded by an accomplished team of British jazz players (at Abbey Road), then handed to Matthew for some serious electronic restructuring. Although a decidedly ambitious project-the music within often veers closer to orchestral jazz than "big band" in places-the results are nonetheless mesmerising. An array of vocalists (including Jamie Lidell, Mara Carlyle and Arto Lindsay) help breathe extra emotion into the songs, complimenting the gentle strings and rhythmic swings and riding Herbert's detailed and inventive studio trickery. Great music that's actually saying something; this is one of the most original and interesting albums you'll hear this year. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Two / Utah Saints:

Utah Saints first hit the charts with "What Can You Do For Me" in August 1991, the same month as The Prodigy's novelty rave hit "Charly". Jez Willis and Kevin Garbutt then paved the way for the Essex boys in America. Their formula of craftily filched vocal hooklines (lifted from Eurythmics and Kate Bush) has been carefully refined since their debut album but the seven-year wait offers partial explanation as to why they haven't shipped millions. Two ushers in big-name vocalists like REM's Michael Stipe and The Pretenders's Chrissie Hynde to bolster the metal guitar samples and pumping beats. Its best moments have all been singles: "Funky Music", the collision of buzzsaw riffs and soul belter Edwin Starr, "Tecknowledgy" with its carefully clipped Stooges sample and the trilling "Love Song". Stipe, whose ad-libbed conversations are sprinkled thinly across four tracks and Hynde, whose voice is inexplicably vocodered, fare less well. Two wants to be a complete album but has too much grout between its tiles. -Mike Pattenden.
