An alias for Canadian technohead and co-founder of Detroit label +8 Richie Hawtin, Plastikman has created the soundtrack for surveillance videos. Incredibly dark and atmospheric, Hawtin plays with the empty places in your head. Electronic noises echo through space as if in barren warehouses. Melodic acid lines drift over never-ending beats in the eerily bleak "Locomotion" and "Contain". This intense music is best heard in quiet isolation, not before a night out on the tiles. -Ed Potton.

Review NME In Association With War Child Presents 1 Love / Various Artists:1 Love, like its predecessor-1995's Help!-is an ambitious, admirable and artistically satisfying attempt to raise money for the War Child charity by having great bands cover great songs. Brian Eno-patron of War Child, producer and general bald-headed genius-and his team have raised the game this time by limiting the choice of songs to number one singles. The choice of tracks is interesting in itself. Take, for instance, McAlmont and Butler's soulful approach to Take That's outstanding "Back for Good"-a song that had been blighted by both writer and performers. Dido (and Faithless) are the perfect interpreters of Beats International's "Dub Be Good to Me" (although tragically they omit the gibberish opening) and Jimmy Eat World transform Prodigy's "Firestarter" from the original claustrophobic car crash into something else entirely, simply by stripping it down to bass, drums and guitar. The only real disasters are Elbow, catatonically murdering Thunderclap Newman's classic "Something in the Air" (their "Independent Woman" was so much better), Muse's "House of the Rising Sun", which sounds exactly as you'd expect, and Feeder covering Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "The Power of Love" rather than the Marty McFly adrenaline surge of the Huey Lewis and the News version. To their credit, they offer up a sublimely creepy vision, shimmering with emotion and based around an unobtrusive acoustic guitar. The record is essential, if nothing else, for Noel Gallagher's acoustic "Merry Christmas Everyone". -Ben Johncock.

Review Ghost Stories / Amanda Ghost:The world of female singer/songwriters is a troubled one. And their deep thinking, emotionally wrought vocals and lyrical obsessions with human relations-all songstress' staples-are hardly the stuff of easy listening. Amanda Ghost is similarly humorously challenged. She cries forth with powerful gravelly vocals and with lines like the string-laden "Numb"'s "Lying on a bed of nails, build me up to watch me fail," lyrically at least, she's as much a match for her distressed predecessors Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette. But it's in the production stakes that Ghost Stories really comes good. Amanda doesn't solely subscribe to the standard piano hammering, angry young woman antics. Sure, she sticks to tradition with the guitar belting "Idol", "Cellophane" and "Glory Girl". But she also mixes things up by complementing the snarly vocals of "Filthy Mind" with Underworld-esque rhythms of psychotic disco, and laments "The Wrong Man", "Empty" and "Blind Man" with the Massive Attack stylings of brooding urban beats and cold strings. Her melodies may be thin and her mentality far from unique, but the musical context points to there being a lot more to Amanda Ghost than just another depressed female singer/songwriter. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Draft 7.30 / Autechre:If you thought Autechre were forever lost in the chattering electronic static and tempo-less industrial fog that characterised their oppressively difficult last album, Draft 7. 30 should come as a very welcome return to formality. Stripping much of the machinery away, Autechre have left hallucinogenic keyboard washes, pumping sub-bass and intensely complex drum patterns, all of which mutate and interact according to some alien logic. Fans suggest that previous album Confield was best listened to quietly in the dead of night; well, Draft 7. 30 is best listened to very loud, through massive speakers. It's the perfect way to appreciate the meaty low-end that palpitates through tracks like "Surripere", the child-like chimes that creep through the background on "Theme of Sudden Roundabout" or the gut-pounding rhythm of "Xylin Room" that suddenly halts for a split-second leaving one sprawling forward on the track's sheer momentum. Hardcore fans might dismiss this as a step back from the brink, a mere retread of ground that's being stamped flat by Autechre's army of copyists. But ultimately, Draft 7. 30 is a blast to listen to-a genuine rarity in leftfield electronica nowadays. -Louis Pattison.
