Ministry of Sound's Clubber's Guide to Ibiza 2001 is probably as close to the sounds of San An and Eivissa as you can get. Most of the top tunes creating havoc on the dance floors at the likes of Pacha, Privilege and Amnesia are here-from Members of Mayday's storming "10 in 01", to the hands-in-the-air fun of Raven Maize's "The Real Life" via the blessed-out beats of Roger Sanchez's "Another Chance", the floor-fillers just keep on coming. The only notable exceptions are Trisco's "Muzak" and the highly sought-after Chemical Brother's "Africa"-but hey, you can't have everything. During the run up to the biggest date change for, ooh, at least a thousand years, the Cream super-clubbing juggernaut continued its runaway success, careening out of Liverpool crammed with yet more club nights, superclub nights, international parties, festivals, merchandise and CDs: especially CDs-stuff like Cream Anthems 2000. True to form, CA2K is packed with the big-tuned evidence of just how good a clubbing year 1999 was: almost all 1999's many, many monster club anthems are present and correct, jostling for their three minutes in the non-stop mix. There's no DJ, mind you: this is a faceless, fiendish computer-style mix with no intention of taking you on a journey, rather, it simply packs in as many "TUNES!" Every summer since the late 1980's, the dance-music market has been flooded with hundreds of dance compilations. Sorting the wheat from the chaff can be a time-consuming and costly purpose, but as a general rule of thumb, compilations from the Ministry of Sound stables are always of a high standard and feature all the biggest tunes. Summer 2000's Clubber's Guide has a genuine summery feel about it and provides a welcome break from the glut of trance compilations that seemed to be clogging up the market, with an album full of up-tempo house anthems like David Morales' "Higher" and full-on carnival tunes like Florian F's "Surreal Brazil". Even before he became an internationally acclaimed DJ and producer, Paul van Dyk was creating tremors in the techno world. Originally released in his native Germany in 1994, 45 RPM marks a pivotal point in the Berliner's career. Thanks to a deal with Mute Records, American audiences finally get a chance to catch up with van Dyk's formative work. The rudimentary club beats and synthesizer effects may sound a bit cold now, but signs of impending stardom are plentifully, particularly on the classic club track "For an Angel" and the high-energy disco cut "Emergency!" -Aidin Vaziri.

After their groundbreaking debut, brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll quickly put trendy tags like "rave", "techno" and "hardcore" behind them. With Orbital 2, the brothers went to great lengths to show that some of their primary interests lay beyond the dance floor, as influences like Miles Davis and Steve Reich crept into the fragmented, floating arrangements. Atmospheric tracks such as "Lush 3-1" and its near relative "Lush 3-2" transcended established electronic formulas by breaking away from regular beat patterns, and they borrowed Opus III vocalist Kirsty to create the catchy, entrancing mesmerizer "Halcyon + On + On".
