Publisher: A Wave Release date: 2001-09-24 RRP: £12.99 Price: £9.42
Review Seventh Wave / System 7:For System 7's latest excursion Seventh Wave, we're presented once again with a diverse selection of dancefloor music that merges the tribal structures of progressive house with the harder edge of techno and other experimental electronica influences. Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy of System 7 are no strangers to the world of production, nor indeed the world of psychedelic electronics. The pair were both in 1970s proto-trance rock group Gong in the 1970s, and as dance producers have been making tunes since the 1980s. "Manik Shamanik" (a collaboration with French DJ Bruno Carala of French disco house crew Rinoceros) gets the party started, a slowly building track that eventually morphs impressively into a spacious and slightly dubbed out cut, all pounding beats and building trance riff finish. From there we encounter the usual broad spectrum. There's the energetic, percussive, Bedrock-style of first single "High Plains Drifter", the dubby bass and swirling ethno-ambience of "7 O'Clock", the vehement trance-acid feel of "Varkala" and the euphoric/cheesy "Chiringuito" for a finale. There are some calmer moments too, which break the album up nicely, though the dubious Balearic charm of "Sal Del Mar" fares badly next to the ambient breakbeat of "Soft Rain", a collaboration with Alex 'Orb' Paterson. A nicely varied but not very surprising project, this is the sound of System 7 ultimately doing exactly what they do best. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Bedrock / John Digweed:One of the scene's best-known trance DJs, along with fellow Brit DJ Sasha, John Digweed continues his winning streak with this collection of sleek, beat-driven beauty. Working off a diverse set of obscure originals, Digweed burrows his way into one's subconscious, slipping in subdued rhythms and day-dreamy thematic elements with skillful grace. He has a patient ear for incorporating transitions between songs, and an uncommonly light touch. Even when the melodies drift away and the drum machines start to overwhelm, there's always a compelling pulse. Disc 2's "CC16," for example, is mercilessly danceable, yet Digweed cleverly employs a simple, sustained note that offsets the tension, offering friendly reassurance as it hangs delicately over the dance floor. Often working with Sasha on such standout trance collections as Global Underground 003: San Francisco, this record establishes Digweed as the light to Sasha's darker musical colorings. There's an almost obsessive insistence on flow, with mellow, languid phrases morphing into fleshed-out songs, then suddenly pulling back again in a barely noticed evolution. The album starts the process early on the Underworld-like opening track, "Listen," pulling off the trick with a silky progression into Tiny Trendies' "The Sky Is Not Crying. " From there, the entire CD unfolds with a lazy elegance, like a cat stretching after a long nap, giving further nuance to Digweed's reputation as a stellar mixologist. -Matthew Cooke.

Review 76.14 / Global Communication:Understood in any language, across any time zone, Global Communication tolls for the human spirit which knows no boundaries. As one of the most significant releases to cross the ambient currents of the 1990s, 76:14 places itself alongside benchmark electronic releases from Brian Eno, the Orb, and the Future Sound of London. These synth-dominated ventures allow the armchair traveller to indulge in atmospheric wanderings which suggest virtual galactic discovery. But often enough the textured beats keep things grounded to dissuade the listener from being lost in the void. Vocal samples from nine languages also remind us of the international and diplomatic intentions of this otherwise electro-instrumental album. Strap in and enjoy the lift-off for all mankind. -Lucas Hilber.

Review The Middle of Nowhere / Orbital:Having outgrown the happy house of the green and brown albums and exploited narrative far too complex for ambient techno, the Hartnoll brothers-Phil and Paul really do find themselves in some Eastern adventure in The Middle of Nowhere. Thus they prove again that they are the most reliable innovators in danceable electronic composition. The inchoate political rage of 1994's "Snivilisation" is here, but it has found purely instrumental claws that are unafraid to dig for new melodies. "Know Where to Run" gathers itself from some beastly buzzing weather to become a dance-floor creature lurching through the village at night like some urban nightmare and "I Don't Know You People" turns the dance floor into an escapist fantasyland once more with its grousing refrain, "nothing changes-goddamn you!" The highly evolved vocal softness of "Autumn" and the weirdly Tangerine Dream-gone-hip-hop "Style" keep a trip-hop story line seamlessly borne out on jungle and electro beats. Nowhere comprises a portrait of boom-boom techno that carjacks beats once lost in space to whole new worlds where breakthrough songwriting is an aesthetic ideal. The UK act who forced the sales charts fully into the postrock 90s is now realising the participatory promise of rock & roll liberation in the dance clubs, where music lives now. -Dean Kuipers.

Review One Word Extinguisher / Prefuse 73:'One Word Extinguisher is an apposite title for the new Prefuse 73 LP. Anyone who experienced Scott Herren's debut, Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives, will already know about his unique approach to producing hip-hop, but if not, this follow-up is an even better place to check it. On his new joint, Herren excels once again at chewing up traditional beats and rhymes with his MPC and spitting them back out as quasi-cubist digital fragments, creating rapid-fire, neck-snapping snares and stuttering, karate-chop vocals. His technique makes for a highly original and slightly avant sound, though most of the genuinely breathtaking rhythm-and-verbal assaults here are tempered by a melodic fluidity that ensures cerebral stimulation as well as heavy head-nod action. Once again, Herren has straddled the worlds of glitch-beep electronica and hip-hop without missing a beat, and has ensured that he occupies a league of his own-one that has to be heard to be believed. -Paul Sullivan.
