Review Winter Chill, Vol. 2 / Various Artists:Wave farewell to our ever-shortening summer season and concentrate on feeling autumnal for a while instead. You might think the deluge of chill-out comps is finished, but it's not, because the cold season is as good a time to "chill" as any, as compilers extraordinaire Hed Kandi are keen to remind us. It's merely a different kind of relaxation we require now apparently, and their much lauded Winter Chill and Serve Chilled compilations are just the ticket. Review The Altogether / Orbital:During their long reign as one of dance music's most endearing acts, the Orbital sound has rarely changed. The result: five albums of beautiful electronic space-symphonies, blunt dancefloor beats and eccentric cinematic themes. And so to album six, 2001's The Altogether. From the start, it's clear that this is no ordinary Orbital album. Gone are the space-opuses of old, replaced by rock-sampling instrumentals, what can be described as "techno skiffle" numbers and David Gray collaborations. Of the 11 tracks here, three are punk-sampling breakbeat romps (think 1996 hit Satan), two are full-on vocal numbers and one's a breakneck drum-and-bass tune about rioting (the Scott Walker-inspired Meltdown). Sure, all the familiar elements are here-tracks such as "Pay Per View", "Doctor Who" and "Shadows" are classic Orbital-but they're no longer the most dominant themes. While fans may find The Altogether uncomfortable listening at first, it's easily the Hartnolls' most varied album to date. Within its 60 minutes lies some of the duo's most inventive and enjoyable music in years. This is a real mixed bag, for sure, but one that demands repeat listens. [+]-Matt Anniss.

Review Global Underground: Sander Kleinenberg - Nu Breed 4 / Sander Kleinenberg:Each of the Global Underground albums (from the likes of Sasha, Darren Emerson and Danny Tenaglia) have carried a distinct blend of house and trance-funky, progressive and intense. Dutch DJ, Sander Kleinenberg's mix on Nu Breed Vol. 4 is no exception. Disc One is that familiar hybrid of smooth and deep synth-led tunes with the premium on pretty melodies and consistent dancefloor shuffle. Kleinenberg's style leans towards peak-time podium classics but is distinguishable from the usual crop of mainstream compilations by virtue of his choices. The gems of the bunch include Satoshi Tomie's "Atari", Hernan Cantaneo's "Deep Funk" and Sasha and Emerson's moody, tribal "Scorcho". All possess an utterly infectious groove that kicks in the first ten seconds and then manages to ramp up the energy with raucous dubbed-out bass lines and quirky effects. What's really worth the cash though is Disc Two, where we find Kleinenberg delivering a curious, eclectic mix in fine style. With cool and precisely engineered layers of rhythmic mystery and suspense, he begins gently with Zinger Meets Spry's off-centre jazz ramble, "Story of the Heaviest Bassline Ever" and Swayzak's lovely "State of Grace". Meanwhile old hands such as The Art of Noise ("Yebo") and Felix Da Housecat, (the demented "Silver Screen Shower Scene") rub shoulders with relative newcomers such as Ghosts' ("10th Planet") and Hidden ("Krystal") in a dancefloor meltdown which manages to be both sexy and wickedly aggressive. As one of the most significant releases to cross the ambient currents of the 1990s, 76:14 places itself alongside benchmark electronic releases from Brian Eno, the Orb, and the Future Sound of London. These synth-dominated ventures allow the armchair traveller to indulge in atmospheric wanderings which suggest virtual galactic discovery. But often enough the textured beats keep things grounded to dissuade the listener from being lost in the void. Vocal samples from nine languages also remind us of the international and diplomatic intentions of this otherwise electro-instrumental album.
