Review Once In A Lifetime : Cream Anthems 2000 / Various Artists:During the run up to the biggest date change for, ooh, at least a thousand years, the Cream super-clubbing juggernaut continued its runaway success, careening out of Liverpool crammed with yet more club nights, superclub nights, international parties, festivals, merchandise and CDs: especially CDs-stuff like Cream Anthems 2000. True to form, CA2K is packed with the big-tuned evidence of just how good a clubbing year 1999 was: almost all 1999's many, many monster club anthems are present and correct, jostling for their three minutes in the non-stop mix. There's no DJ, mind you: this is a faceless, fiendish computer-style mix with no intention of taking you on a journey, rather, it simply packs in as many "TUNES!" (© gurners of the world) as the collection's two CDs will allow. Review Old Skool Euphoria: Mixed By Altern 8 / Altern 8:The nostalgia industry grinds onward ever onward, but along the way, it throws up a few real gems. If the reported long-term effects of ecstasy are anything to go by, Old Skool Euphoria should be a barely-reminiscent series of fluffy, disposable dance tunes. Remarkably, though, a decade on, these tunes still sound bright, brash and refreshing as the enormous smily that adorns this album's cover. Old Skool Euphoria spans the broad dance terrain of the early 1990s, from the chart-friendly pop-rave overground to the darker strains of emergent techno, jungle and progressive house, and surprisingly, for a compilation mixed by boiler-suited acid-house commandos Altern-8-an act once mocked as the novelty face of hardcore-it's remarkably gimmick-free. No "Ebeneezer Goode" or "Sesame's Treet" here: instead, ancient rave treasures such as LFO's "LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix)" and Renegade Soundwave's "Phantom" rub up against joyful pop epiphanies such as Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era's "Far Out" and Snap's "Rhythm Is A Dancer". Review Double Figure / Plaid:Three years in the making, Double Figure is Plaid's third album for esteemed leftfield label Warp. Over the years, the ex Black Dog duo have been leaders in the whole "intelligent electronica" thing, filling their albums with pleasing melodies, zippy beats and clattering noises (2000s retrospective collection Trainer is seen by many as proof of their status as the most important electronic artists in Britain). Double Figure is as good as anything they've done, with tracks fluctuating between Plone-esque playful electronics and Autechre style programmed experimentation. It's an enjoyable collection, much like 1998s Rest Proof Clockwork (their earlier work was more introspective). Perhaps not as cutting edge as some of their earlier work, but immensely enjoyable nonetheless. -Matt Anniss.
