It may come as a shock to the purists, but after two albums of pushing abstruse drum & bass to minimalist and epic extremes, the East Anglian producer has thrown a heap of new sounds onto his percussive palate. To some, Solaris is going to sound like a chicken in search of a roost: both "Can't Come Down" and "Mine To Give" are pure 1988 old-school Chicago house. The latter even features that era's legendary vocalist, Robert Owens. "Terminus" and "Junk" pay loose homage to the nu-school breakz template, while "Halogen" and "Lost Blue Heaven" are beautifully poised, damaged electronic torch songs. There's even some drifting ambience too. But what's missing in terms of coherence is more than made up for by the visceral power of Photek's production. Intense, stripped back and wielding more brute force than Leftfield's "Swords", there's a menacing beauty at work here that reinforces Photek's reputation for tingling sonic sculpturing on a grand scale. -Calvin Bush.

A self-confessed "filmaholic" who often spends afternoons before sets in cinemas the world over, Paul Oakenfold has gone about capturing the sinister, malevolent mood of Dominic Sena's action-crime thriller with careful attention to both art and audience. His weave of cuts such as Dope Smugglaz dark and tense "The Word (PMT Remix)", Lemon Jelly's sunrise chill-out "Kneel Before Your God" and his own retro-electro collaboration with Afrika Bambaataa and The Soul Sonic Force, "Planet Rock (Swordfish Mix)" is smart and evocative, a glistening picture of LA's high-tech underbelly in 2001. Indeed, it's hard not to hear beautiful, wealthy people at gorgeous raves in bathroom stalls somewhere off the Sunset Strip as Oakenfold segues the sleazy "Stanley's Tune" into the neon techno of "Password". Headphones could well be the way to go on initial spins, simply because Oakenfold's mix is spiced with the sort of celluloid nuances and attentions that are big enough to make this different from, say, Perfecto Presents Another World but smooth enough to be enjoyable once properly processed. As trance continues its ascendancy of of the world's club scene, so to rises the chequebook DJ-an unscrupulous type that cobbles together a ropy compilation in order to con those sun-addled punters eager to re-capture that Balearic daze. Thankfully, Trance Nation 2 was pieced together for Ministry Of Sound on the decks of Ferry Corsten, the man behind System F, and at the time of release, one of trance's hottest names. Eager to come on like the definitive article, Trance Nation 2 is plain in its intention and clearly aims to be the be-all, end-all if-you-only-buy-one-trance-compilation, but that's not to cast aspersions on its ruthless appeal. Remember that this stuff only tore the charts to pieces in the first place because it filled so many dancefloors, and there's no room to be sniffy when the likes of Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone", ATB's "Don't Stop" and System F's "Out Of The Blue" are plainly such cast-iron anthems. -Louis Pattison.

The term "chill out" has been used intensely to market LPs over the past few years. What it usually indicates is a compilation stuffed full of the downtempo, balearic and leftfield tracks that have been big over the summer. The Euphoria series is a light exception to the rule in that its choice of tracks isn't quite so obvious. Tracks like TallPaul vs INXS "Precious Heart", Chicane's "Overture", Dido's "Take My Hand" and Jakatta's "American Dream" have all appeared on their fair share of compilations over the last few months, but they are joined by more considered choices such as Tangerine Dream's "Love an a Real Train", Talvin Singh's "Disser", Art of Noise's "Moments in Love", Future Sound of London's"Papua New Guinea" and some exclusives from Solar Stone and Push. The album also has the advantage of being mellifluously mixed (digitally, by Solar Stone) so that your relaxed mind state isn't distracted too much by gaps and breaks. Not the most essential listen, but certainly one to get you into the chilled zone without repeating the formula too much. -Paul Sullivan.
