Review Fiesta Songs / Senor Coconut:It's always nice to hear music that combines interesting ideas with a sense of humour and Fiesta Songs has plenty of both. Señor Coconut-aka prolific sonic chameleon Uwe Schmidt-has proved himself a master of tongue-in-cheek musical madness on many occasions. Schmidt's Señor Coconut persona has been his most popular project by far though. It's no surprise given the concept, which is the transformation of well-known songs into slightly cheesy, mildly exotic Latino lounge music. After cha-cha-cha-ing a load of Kraftwerk classics on his previous El Baile Aleman (The German Dance) LP, he returns now with a more diverse collection than before, one that embraces a range of soul, pop and rock classics from the last 30 years. "Smoke on the Water", "Riders on the Storm", "Blue Eyes", "Smooth Operator" and "Beat It" all get the Coconut treatment and sit alongside a few original compositions. Review ISDN / Future Sound Of London:"They're so antisocial," said Mixmaster Morris of the reclusive Future Sound of London. "They won't even go to parties anymore-they do all their gigs over the telephone. " After the success of their majestic "Papua New Guinea" single and the Accelerator album from which it was taken, FSOL retreated to the studio and never left. Their only communication with the outside world was through their music, an increasingly abstract Dadaist collage of overdubbed beats and noises that defied genres and stymied trend-happy journalists. While some of the material on ISDN was previously released under the pseudonym Far Out Son of Lung (the worst-kept secret in dance music), the bulk of the album was taped from performances delivered via digital telephone links to radio stations throughout Europe. Naturally, the ubiquitous and intrusive medium of radio encourages challenging and elaborate environmental music. So unlike their previous album, Lifeforms, whose closest earthly relation was techno, ISDN is the distant cousin of jazz, both in its blatant sampling of sax and drums and its freeform, exploratory nature. -Matthew Corwine.

Review Pause / Four Tet:Kieran Hebden is, it has to be said, something of a genius. The groundwork for Pause was laid on Dialogue-his debut solo album under the guise of Four Tet-landed in 1999, and immediately went about redrawing the parameters of inventive dance music. A peculiar mix of live-sounding instrumental jazz and technologically super-precise laptop dance trickery, it sounded nothing like Hebden's actual group-his day job is spent toiling in occasionally inspired post-rockers Fridge-and, as it happened, very little like anything else in existence. While not as radical a statement as Dialogue seemed, Pause is a definite update-a second brave step into the great beyond; where Dialogue employed jazz sax and flute in its evocation of a 21st-century jazz meltdown, Pause goes even further, coiling whispers of harp and zither over layer-on-layers of fidgeting, rattling percussion. His inspirations? Well, like his friend and protégé, Canadian tech-wizard Manitoba (whose excellent Start Breaking My Heart is easily the equal of Pause), Hebden collects sounds and melodies from a dizzying array of places-ancient British folk music, the rattle of typewriter keys, the gurgle of running water, even a field recording of a children's playground.
