Review Travelling / Paul Oakenfold:He likes to keep it in the family, does Paul Oakenfold. As the label boss of Planet Perfecto records and a dedicated trance producer in his own right, when it came to compiling Perfecto presents. Paul Oakenfold-Travelling, he doesn't appear to have had to look far beyond his own doorstep. No, it's fair to say that. Travelling hardly casts its net wide, hinging as it does on several Perfecto tunes-the likes of Timo Maas and Jazzy M loom pretty large-and a fair few Oakey-penned compositions: a reworking of Planet Perfecto's podium-storming "Bullet In The Gun", Element 4's Moby-like stadium rave-up "Big Brother" and the intensely psychedelic trance of Bunker's "Decent" (the last, penned alongside fellow programmer Andy Gray). Assuming you can overlook Oakey's seemingly self-indulgent streak of nepotism, this makes for an undeniably consistent collection; even the more obscure choices segue in and out perfectly around cuts from Utah Saints, Dave Kane, and the Timo Maas-reworked take on Azzido Da Bass' "Doom's Night". Review Everything Is Wrong : DJ Mix Album / Moby:Moby is an ambitious man, both musically and philosophically, and that quality seeps into every aspect of Everything Is Wrong, from the wunderkind DJing that stretches the genre limits of techno to the angry, antiestablishment manifesto on the CD sleeve. The record's opening salvo of dancey club music sets the listener up for "All That I Need Is to Be Loved", which, out of nowhere, bludgeons would-be club kids with tuneless, mad vocals and punked-out guitar solos. The same bait-and-switch formula repeats twice on the CD at almost regular intervals in the industrial shriek of "What Love" and the sudden, slow, and acoustic bent and folksy vocals of "Into the Blue". All three shifts are jarringly abrupt. However, dance-floor continuity is in Moby's blood, and he uses these songs as parts one, two, and three of the underlying rage that drives the record's concept. Without these three tracks, in fact, you'd have a moody yet convincingly cohesive danceathon, bouncing between house breakbeats ("Feeling So Real", "Bring Back My Happiness") and blissed-out trance ("God Moving Over the Face of the Waters"). Instead, Moby expresses his bewildered and desperate view of modern life by periodically yanking away the escape of blind, danceable ecstasy, using that discontinuity to express the eyes-wide-open ruminations of a furious idealist. -Matthew Cooke.

Review Revolution - Uplifting Progressive Trance / DJ Tiesto (Mixed By):If you only buy one trance compilation all year, make sure it's Revolution from Dutch club legend DJ Tiesto. The most celebrated DJ in the Netherlands, it's easy to see why he commands such praise, mainly because over two CDs (Bright and Dark) of primetime floor-filler, there's rarely a dull moment. Listening to disc one requires very little effort; in fact the celestial brightness and bouncing melody of Goldenscan's "Sunrise" is equally effective sat in an armchair as it is on the dance floor. In any case, get yourself comfortable for whispering, gossamer vocals, crisp analogue breakdowns and Oakey-style riffage. Over on disc two the mood veers from assured, bass-driven monsters like Bullitt's "Cried To Dream" to the harder, stabbier assault of Kamaya Painter's "Wasteland" and the dark gothic fantasy that is Ballroom's "Passenger". If you thought trance was all soulless repetition, Tiesto proves it's still a sound to be reckoned with. -Paul Tierney.

Review Unreasonable Behaviour / Laurent Garnier:Laurent Garnier-the original funky Frenchman, house-and techno- impressario, label boss (Mr Oizo of Flat Eric fame was his discovery) and DJ who first dared the world to believe that French dance music could be cool-returns with his first album since 1998's distinctly patchy 30. Unreasonable Behaviour is much better. "Sounds From The Big Babou", the initial single from this long player, is a great lolloping hunk of funky analogue filth, with a cool tune to boot: just what the world and its dancing dog likes. "The Man with The Red Face" takes the usual techno-no-go area of saxophone solos and honks and squawks it through some seriously energised tech-house grooves; "Dangerous Drive"'s minimalist techno does exactly what it says: packs a heaving dance floor into a Ferrari and takes it on a top-speed rampage down some twisty mountain tracks in Colombia, USA. In between, there are moments of electro reflection, gently mellowing tech-house and ace farty synth sounds pootling around being friendly, chilled and tuneful. Review The Altogether / Orbital:During their long reign as one of dance music's most endearing acts, the Orbital sound has rarely changed. The result: five albums of beautiful electronic space-symphonies, blunt dancefloor beats and eccentric cinematic themes. And so to album six, 2001's The Altogether. From the start, it's clear that this is no ordinary Orbital album. Gone are the space-opuses of old, replaced by rock-sampling instrumentals, what can be described as "techno skiffle" numbers and David Gray collaborations. Of the 11 tracks here, three are punk-sampling breakbeat romps (think 1996 hit Satan), two are full-on vocal numbers and one's a breakneck drum-and-bass tune about rioting (the Scott Walker-inspired Meltdown). Sure, all the familiar elements are here-tracks such as "Pay Per View", "Doctor Who" and "Shadows" are classic Orbital-but they're no longer the most dominant themes. While fans may find The Altogether uncomfortable listening at first, it's easily the Hartnolls' most varied album to date. Within its 60 minutes lies some of the duo's most inventive and enjoyable music in years. This is a real mixed bag, for sure, but one that demands repeat listens. [+]-Matt Anniss.
