Review Trance Nation Vol.1: Mixed By System F / System F:The first in Ministry Of Sound's huge-selling Trance Nation series, this volume sees System F man Ferry Corsten tackling a set that, in hindsight, is as eclectic as it is accomplished. It's easy to sneer as the compilation kicks with Robert Miles' trite Euro-cheese anthem "Children", but Corsten, eager to blow his own trumpet, quickly jams it into his very own "Out Of The Blue"-a track that can claim to be trance's very own "Blue Monday". Underworld's "Dark And Long" and Lucid's "I Can't Help Myself" prove the first disc's highlights, but disc two takes us from the sublime to the ridiculous-Paul Oakenfold's remix of Mansun's "Wide Open Space" fronts a veritable trance hit parade, with tracks from Faithless, Paul Van Dyk, BT, and let's not forget the omnipresent ATB's "9PM (Til I Come)". Trance Nation 1 does exactly what it says on the box. -Louis Pattison.

Review Outrospective/Reperspective / Faithless:Reperspective is essentially a collection of remixes of tracks from the dance trio's third album, Outrospective, plus a handful of previously unreleased tracks; but it is something of a mixed blessing. As a straight-up dance set, it's hard to fault. The dank club funk of new tracks "Daimoku" and "Lotus", and the sinister sci-fi bongo charge of BBC World Cup theme "God Is a Beckham", deliver dance-floor menace as only Faithless can. Elsewhere though, the very things that separate Faithless from the crowd-dark drama, sensual moods and Maxi Jazz's haunting monologues-are lost in favour of the up-scaled BPM. Though capable floor-fillers, UK garage supremo Wookie's rework of "We Come 1" and Ernest St Laurent's glistening disco remix of "Liontamer" have very little of Faithless about them. There are notable exceptions though. The radio edit of the Dido sung "One Step Too Far" is perfect grown-up pop and Brothers on High's rigid house turns "Crazy English Summer" into a hazy club anthem. Meanwhile, P-Nut's low-slung breakbeats, make his hip-hop makeover of "Giving Myself Away" even more grimy than the original, which can only be a good thing. -Mark Daniels.

Review Blue Album / Orbital:The Blue Album is the seventh and supposedly final album by one of dance music's most enduring pioneers. Orbital's blend of techno, breaks and acid has been mimicked but never quite copied in their 10-plus years at the top. Fans looking for sweeping cinematic dance numbers may be confused by first track "Transient", six minutes of techno bubbles, awash with echo, but not so much as a bass drum in sight. However, as it is common for their songs to be progressive, here it is the album itself that progs. Beginning in a chilled style best described as techno-Enya, the beats pick up and the synths get spikier until "You Lot", a classic Orbital piece complete with theological dialogue and a swirling melody. "Bath Time" is more downbeat, a warm baroque number that slows the pace only to enhance the impact of next track "Acid Pants", a twisted acid monster featuring Sparks on vocals, which could well be the highlight of the album. The closing song featuring Lisa Gerrard is upbeat, jolly tech-house with her ethereal vocal soaring over the top-a fitting end to an album and indeed career that brought techno to the mainstream and kept analogue synthesisers cool. -David Trueman.

Review Push the Beat for This Jam: the Singles 1994-2002 / Scooter:After brief brushes with the UK chart in the mid 1990s, Scooter retreated back to their native Hamburg to carry on producing their trademark Eurotrash-pop and to concentrate on their native mainland European fan base. Push The Beat For This Jam collects together some of the highlights from those 'missing years'. Like their best-known track "The Logical Song", the collection is filled with tracks that are adored in the discos of the Azores. Featuring samples from familiar sounding tunes, the tracks are instantly catchy but also totally trashy. On their cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" and on the dreadful "F**k The Millennium", the guys delude themselves that they're the hard guys of Euro-pop. Instead they just sound like X-Rated Aqua impostors. With samples of crowds cheering, and the rapping of their nonsensical lyrics, there are also distinct echoes of the KLF and The Shamen. However at least the KLF were always 'tongue in cheek' but on the bizarrely titled "How Much Is The Fish?" Scooter seem to be seriously lacking irony. Push For The Beat For This Jam is recommended listening for, souped-up XR-3i drivers, who like to play music 'loud' on their car stereos. -John Galilee.
