The first in Ministry Of Sound's huge-selling Trance Nation series, this volume sees System F man Ferry Corsten tackling a set that, in hindsight, is as eclectic as it is accomplished. It's easy to sneer as the compilation kicks with Robert Miles' trite Euro-cheese anthem "Children", but Corsten, eager to blow his own trumpet, quickly jams it into his very own "Out Of The Blue"-a track that can claim to be trance's very own "Blue Monday". Underworld's "Dark And Long" and Lucid's "I Can't Help Myself" prove the first disc's highlights, but disc two takes us from the sublime to the ridiculous-Paul Oakenfold's remix of Mansun's "Wide Open Space" fronts a veritable trance hit parade, with tracks from Faithless, Paul Van Dyk, BT, and let's not forget the omnipresent ATB's "9PM (Til I Come)". Classics-now that's put the cat among the pigeons. For Warp to define their seminal techno anthems in the same revered language that's usually applied to see off the balding old rockers should put the backs up some mouldy old "real music" purists. But then, what you'll find here, in the second two-CD compilation to mark Warp's Tenth Anniversary, is the very heart of spirited revolution. These rare cuts from the label's first three years sound a lot tamer now, but at the time, they amounted to a whole new musical dialect. Look first, then, to the robotic synth stutter of Forgemasters' "Track With No Name", carry on through the glacial bleep of Sweet Exorcist's "Testone", tarry awhile on the gliding atmospherics of LFO's first two singles, and then lose yourself in Nightmares On Wax's burgeoning eclecticism that stamps its authority over much of the second disc. Classics? In a weird way, yes. But weird's the best way to be. -Louis Pattison.

It's always nice to hear music that combines interesting ideas with a sense of humour and Fiesta Songs has plenty of both. Señor Coconut-aka prolific sonic chameleon Uwe Schmidt-has proved himself a master of tongue-in-cheek musical madness on many occasions. Schmidt's Señor Coconut persona has been his most popular project by far though. It's no surprise given the concept, which is the transformation of well-known songs into slightly cheesy, mildly exotic Latino lounge music. After cha-cha-cha-ing a load of Kraftwerk classics on his previous El Baile Aleman (The German Dance) LP, he returns now with a more diverse collection than before, one that embraces a range of soul, pop and rock classics from the last 30 years. "Smoke on the Water", "Riders on the Storm", "Blue Eyes", "Smooth Operator" and "Beat It" all get the Coconut treatment and sit alongside a few original compositions. Some say he's a renegade genius, others that he's a tacky cover artist-most of us are too busy swaying and smiling to care. -Paul Sullivan.

Brazillification 2 is the second instalment in Fila Brazillia's remix series. The duo-Man and Steve Cobby-have a knack for coming up with delightful, hybridised tunes that balance a killer club ethos with a distinctive musicality. Already eight albums deep in terms of their own artistic accomplishments, they have also turned in a vast amount of remixes for other people over the years. Hence the Brazillifiation series, which collects their best-or, at least, favourite-reworkings under one roof. Compilations of this kind featuring artists of the moment such as Paul Van Dyk, Oliver Lieb and Michael Moog pick at the difference between music for your stereo and music for the DJ. Almost every track in this double-CD box set was a monster club hit in 1999-designed for late-night sessions and dancefloor pressure. Although Judge Jules is a technically proficient mixer and avoids the monotony of most 4/4 tech-trance with a few masterful tempo changes, at home they sound pretty much the same from track to track. Even those that begin with complex layers of shimmying house and soul segue into furious "trance nation" explosions. From Basement Jaxx's "Jump 'n' Shout", this very cutely packaged collection really begins to ignite a powerful groove, moving away from the bland, bouncing, grinning rhythms of trance to funk things up with ragga and electro. A few songs are worth being played over and over again especially "That Sound", "Back to the Funk" and "Feeling this way", but the full intoxicating power of a track like "Iguana" won't be apparent unless you're in a pulsating room with a few hundred gyrating strangers burning up the dancefloor. -Felix Obi Zuze.

The Ministry of Sound take us Back to the Old Skool once more with the second volume of their nostalgic house compilation. From vocal house classics such as CeCe Peniston's "Finally", Blue Pearl's "Naked in the Rain" and Robin S's "Show Me Love" to acid house faves LFO, D Mob and Altern 8, via former chart smashes from the likes of Rozalla, Snap, Sub Sub and the Shamen, you might not remember the titles or artists, but every track brings back fond memories. Spiral Tribe, Castlemorton, smiley faces, Global Hypercolour T-shirts, whistles, white gloves and a nation of clubbers discovering ecstasy-all neatly summed up in 40 tracks. What is even more astonishing is the staying power of some of the tracks present, Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea", Chad Jackson's "Hear the Drummer Get Wicked" and King Bee's "Back by Dope Demand" still get dropped into sets the length and breadth of the country to be met with a collective sigh of familiarity, without sounding dated in any way.
