Review The Altogether / Orbital:During their long reign as one of dance music's most endearing acts, the Orbital sound has rarely changed. The result: five albums of beautiful electronic space-symphonies, blunt dancefloor beats and eccentric cinematic themes. And so to album six, 2001's The Altogether. From the start, it's clear that this is no ordinary Orbital album. Gone are the space-opuses of old, replaced by rock-sampling instrumentals, what can be described as "techno skiffle" numbers and David Gray collaborations. Of the 11 tracks here, three are punk-sampling breakbeat romps (think 1996 hit Satan), two are full-on vocal numbers and one's a breakneck drum-and-bass tune about rioting (the Scott Walker-inspired Meltdown). Sure, all the familiar elements are here-tracks such as "Pay Per View", "Doctor Who" and "Shadows" are classic Orbital-but they're no longer the most dominant themes. While fans may find The Altogether uncomfortable listening at first, it's easily the Hartnolls' most varied album to date. Within its 60 minutes lies some of the duo's most inventive and enjoyable music in years. This is a real mixed bag, for sure, but one that demands repeat listens. [+]

Review Getting High on Your Own Supply / Apollo 440:Fatboy Slim digs deep in the vaults, finds an obscure surf-guitar classic, and with a wave of his big beat wand, "Sliced Tomatoes" by the Just Brothers undergoes a phoenix-like rebirth, emerging as the all-conquering "Rockafeller Skank". Meanwhile, Apollo Four Forty nip down the local Oxfam, and pick out Status Quo's "Caroline". It's the main sample on their Top Ten smash "Don't Stop The Rock". Will this do? Actually, yes. Big beat has a way with making the cheesiest of rock moves seem like God-given dancefloor charm, and much of Gettin' High is a pretty competent, self proclaimed festival of the dumb. No, "Crazee Horse"'s refrain of "I got no remorse / Like a crazee horse" doesn't quite have the same idiot savant ring as "check it out now/ the funk soul brother", but "Lost In Space" has no doubt filled more dancefloors than the rest of the Skint roster put together, which makes Gettin' High pretty hard to knock. -Louis Pattison.

Review Flying Away / Smoke City:Though best known for the use of the single "Underwater Love" in a Levi's commercial, Smoke City's debut album, Flying Away, has a surprising amount to offer. Fronted by the multi-culti Nina Miranda-who answers the question of what a Brazilian-born Björk would sound like-the band combines an inherent bias towards tropicalia with the more electronic sounds of groups like Thievery Corporation and Portishead; the result varies between a dance jam like "Darkwalk" and the slinky "Mr. Gorgeous (and Miss Curvaceos)", between the darkly playful "Aguas De Marco" and the lush "With You". Gently inviting, but with significant substance, Flying Away is a long-term delight. -Randy Silver.

Review Dubnobasswithmyheadman / Underworld:Although Leftfield's Leftism may take the title of best album by a British dance artist, the debut LP from Underworld was a sublime collage of lush textures and insistent beats which displayed the kind of dynamic ambition which has made their live shows so exciting. The daft-yet-heartfelt vocals of Karl Hyde drift amongst Rick Smith's controlled guitar and Darren Emerson's mesmerising drum patters, an intoxicating blend on tracks such as "Mmm. Skyscraper", "I Love You" and "Cowgirl". "Tongue", meanwhile, shows a gentler, warmer side to the band, as Hyde's tones wrap themselves lovingly around subtle chords, while the lush melodies and uplifiting ambience of "M. E. " provide a worthy finale. The rarest of things: a varied, emotional dance album that doesn't sacrifice authenticity for innovation. -Ed Potton.

Review In Sides / Orbital:By the time Orbital released its fourth album, the Hartnoll brothers were strongly tipped as techno heavyweights alongside more commercially palatable prospects like Underworld and Prodigy. Yet, instead of catering to the curious, they presented their most self-indulgent album to date with In Sides. Packaging the 24-minute symphonic track "Out There Somewhere?" with the loopy psychedelic flight of "P. E. T. R. O. L. ", they created a most unusual and intriguing collection. Despite their best efforts, though, "The Box" still packed the same insistent rhythm that made "Belfast" such an indelible club staple. [+]

Review Trance Nation Vol.3 / Various Artists:For the third instalment of their ever-popular trance compilation series, Ministry of Sound stick to the old adage -"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". So, once more they have trance-meister Ferry Corsten (AKA System F) at the helm, setting the controls for the heart of the dance floor and putting his foot to the floor on the smoke machine and the strobe lights. As with the previous two volumes it's packed with floor fillers from start to finish, including chart-toppers from Chicane and Fragma, as well as instant classics from the likes of Onephatdeeva and Azzido Da Bass. In the privacy of your own home, it's never going to be as good as blasting out of the PA in the midst of a hot sweaty loved-up crowd, but it's perfect fare for getting ready for a big night out. There are a few duff tracks in there-the much overrated Flickman's "Sound of Bamboo" for one, but if it's huge throbbing trance tunes you're after, then your quest is at an end. -Helen Marquis.

Review The Annual Vol.2 / Various Artists:When two of the UK's leading DJs get together to play the cream of dance music from 1996, it's a recipe for success. Disc One features Pete Tong's favourite tunes from the year, and demonstrates his exceptional taste: there's Stretch 'n' Vern's "I'm Alive" mixed by Fatboy Slim and "Insomnia" by Faithless, but best is the huge dancefloor anthem "Professional Widow" by Tori Amos, remixed by Armand Van Helden. Tong's style and taste are uplifting and funky, with a slightly harder edge than Boy George, who mixes Disc Two. Kicking things off with the Prodigy, he slips neatly into the Underworld classic, "Born Slippy. " After that, the feel becomes more Hardcore Handbag as he throws "Pulse" featuring Antoinette Robeson, "The Lover That You Are", E-Voke's "Arms Of Loren" and Manky's "Believe In Me" into the mix. -Carina Trimingham.
