Review Flying Away / Smoke City:Though best known for the use of the single "Underwater Love" in a Levi's commercial, Smoke City's debut album, Flying Away, has a surprising amount to offer. Fronted by the multi-culti Nina Miranda-who answers the question of what a Brazilian-born Björk would sound like-the band combines an inherent bias towards tropicalia with the more electronic sounds of groups like Thievery Corporation and Portishead; the result varies between a dance jam like "Darkwalk" and the slinky "Mr. Gorgeous (and Miss Curvaceos)", between the darkly playful "Aguas De Marco" and the lush "With You". Gently inviting, but with significant substance, Flying Away is a long-term delight. -Randy Silver.

Review This Films Crap (Let's Slash The Seats) / David Holmes:As an aspiring DJ, the Irish-born David Holmes wanted to score movies, but producers weren't exactly beating a path to his door. So instead, he decided to make imaginary soundtracks of his own-to set music to the films he carried round in his head. This album was the result: an ambitious, diverse and, yes, profoundly cinematic collection of electronic tracks. The opening cut, "No Man's Land," was reportedly inspired by the Daniel Day-Lewis film In The Name Of The Father-and in the same way, it's possible to see "Gone" as a relic from some late-1960s arthouse classic, thanks to the breathy guest vocals of Saint Etienne's Sarah Cracknell. Jah Wobble guests on "Got Fucked Up Along The Way," while Steve Hillage contributes some typically mesmeric guitar to "Inspired By Leyburn"-but mostly this is Holmes's baby, showcasing his gift for arrangement and his fondness for atmospherics. Since its release, he's even gotten to compose some music for film and TV-proving, yet again, that you make your own luck. -Andrew McGuire.

Review Everything Everything / Underworld:Underworld returned from the Beaucoup Fish World Tour at the end of 1999, utterly exhausted after almost two years of international touring. It was the final straw for deck-wizard Darren Emerson, who picked up his record box, jetted off to Uruguay, and claimed his mantle as a globe-trotting international DJ, turning his back on Underworld forever. Rick Smith, however, reacted to the experience of coming off tour in a very different way. Locking himself in the studio for eight months, he watched and listened to tape after tape of the Underworld live experience, examining it, dissecting it, evaluating it. The result is Everything, Everything, a 75-minute compilation of the band's greatest onstage moments, from a rampant, super-fast "Shudder/ King Of Snake" to a breathtaking closing hybrid of techno milestones on "Rez/ Cowgirl"-not forgetting, of course, a frenetic thunder through the band's ultimate crowd-pleaser, the heavenly proto-trance anthem "Born Slippy".
