Review Mouse and the Man / Eek-a-Mouse:

The NBA-statured rodent hit the reggae scene in 1981, busting poses like a Vogue model and singjaying (a combination of singing and rapping) an irresistible slice of Jamaican humor entitled "She Too Short (Me Too Tall). " Mouse stayed current throughout the decade via a steady flow of more inspired vinyl zaniness. This 1990 effort captures him just before the vocal acrobatics-the falsetto wah-wah's, leisurely basso, and bing-b-bing-boing scats-began to wilt. Despite the rushed tempos of early '90s-style reggae, Mouse opts here for 10 slo-mo retro instrumental tracks over which he delivers typically quirky but nonetheless astute social observations, with two gal hommage tunes thrown in to keep them happy. -Elena Oumano.

This veteran reggae crooner's double-disc best-of collection leapfrogs indiscriminately among McGregor's rootsy '70s music, funkier '80s work, and computer-driven '90s output. At times-when he waxes Rasta-righteous on tunes like "Natural Collie" and "Bobby Babylon"-he sounds like a Jamaican Marvin Gaye; but McGregor's lover's-rock persona eventually outweighs his conscious disposition, which is why he sounds more comfortable covering the Main Ingredient's "Just Don't Wanna Be Lonely" and the Sandpipers' hoary "Guantanamera. " During his '70s prime, however, McGregor could do no wrong. Backed by producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's catchiest rhythms, McGregor adapted American doo-wop and the smooth R&B moves of the Spinners and O'Jays for a suave, utterly commercial sound solid enough turn even an ode to the spiritual joys of running shoes ("Jogging") into a hit. -Richard Gehr.

Review 400% Dynamite: Ska Soul Rocksteady Funk & Dub in Jamaica / Various Artists:

London's Soul Jazz is a specialist record store and label that's earned a deservedly hip reputation selling records and releasing compilations-they deal ska, dub, Latin, funk (and of course, soul and jazz) cuts. This collection is more off the hook than previous Soul Jazz LPs, which have focused on specific points in musical time and history (70s NY Latin or neolithic Jamaican ska, for example). Instead as Soul Jazz explain, 400 per cent Dynamite is "more about the tunes that we're playing out in the clubs-the ones that really get people dancing. " All the tracks are culled from Jamaican studios/producers but traverse the decades to slap Barrington Levy and King Tubby next to Buju Banton and Tenor Saw. If anything unites the tracks it's exuberance-from the boisterous weed-homage of Levy's "Under Mi Sensi" to Paris Connection's smoochy Isley's cover on "Who's That Lady"-it's the flipside to reggae's quiet devotions, a soundtrack from Jamaica's ramped up and lusty Saturday nights. -Tony Marcus.
