Review Funky Kingston / Toots & The Maytals:By 1975, rock audiences were finally getting heavily into reggae, thanks to the success of Bob Marley's first two albums and Jimmy Cliff's soundtrack for The Harder They Come. Funky Kingston, a collection of early 1970s Maytals singles, was released to capitalise on the newfound demand for Jamaican sounds, and it did not disappoint-nor will it disappoint anyone who comes across it today. With Toots Hibbert's gritty vocals at the fore, this is the closest reggae ever got to American soul music. If sublimely funky tracks such as "Time Tough", "Got To Be There" and "Pressure Drop" don't make you smile, then their ganja-laced cover of John Denver's "Country Roads" (complete with a shout-out to "West Jamaica") should definitely do the trick. -Dan Epstein.

Review Independant Intavenshan / Linton Kwesi Johnson:Virtually every track Linton Kwesi Johnson (a. k. a. LKJ) and Dennis Bovell's superb Dub Band ever released for the Island label is here, with nearly every poem followed by its dub, or instrumental, version. While the double set doesn't cover the rebel-poet-musician's non-Island early and post-1984 careers, it does a thorough job on the extended midsection. LKJ comes through as a meticulous, evocative master of telling detail who rarely slips into the pitfall of didactic rhetoric. The dubs, some of which were never released before or were remixed for this LP, are prime examples of a brilliant reggae invention: dub style. First, the music is pared down to the core, then it is reassembled and re-offered as a well-tinkered deconstruction of the original. LKJ's voice is reduced to instrument status in these dubs, and his sliced, diced, and slivered bits gain maximum impact from a new conciseness fleshed out by the listener's memory. -Elena Oumano.
