The movement-the fashion, the attitude, the sense of rebellion-had arrived long before the record companies could capture it on vinyl, so London's Roxy club catered for the discerning clubber with another edgy rebel sound: dub reggae. Compiled by the club's rastafari DJ Don Letts-a future Big Audio Dynamite member, and one-time manager of punk-reggae maidens The Slits-Dreads Meets The Punk Rockers Uptown showcases a selection of the era's breaking Jamaican sounds. There's a wealth of bona fide dub classics here, in the shape of King Tubby's "Bag Of Wire Dub", Augustus Pablo's "King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown", Lee "Scratch" Perry's "The Tackro", and The Congos' "Fisherman". The most intriguing tracks, however, are those included as a signpost towards punk's evolution: see Junior Murvin's "Police And Thieves", later to be covered by The Clash, marking punk's shift away from posturing white guitar rage, and towards defiant, anti-authoritarian multicultural statements. Review Art and Life / Beenie Man:Warning: Art and Life is Beenie Man's "fusion" album-an attempt to stretch the boundaries of reggae. Those who like their dancehall straight up may find themselves unimpressed. The art that Beenie's created sounds slightly artificial. It's extremely disconcerting to hear "de girls dem sugar" spouting off about "fake-a$$ n**@s", as he does on the "Hate Me Now"-esque "Haters and Fools". Thematically, the album is all over the place with an emphasis on mainstream hip hop and R&B. Apparently Beenie called in his favours for this one. Art features a whole heap of high-profile guest stars, who don't really add anything spectacular to the mix. Two better-deserving Jamaican vocalists could easily have replaced R&B princesses Mya and Kelis. Wyclef's "eclectic" persona is abrasive and Redman's contribution to "Love Me Now" actually manages to come off as offensive. On the plus side, Beenie and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' Steve Perry score with "Ola", a groovy little reversal of Sugar Ray's and Supercat's "Fly". [+]-Rebecca Levine.

Review Dreadlocks Dread / Big Youth:The DJ behind Dreadlocks Dread, Big Youth, was the first to take the serious message of early 70s roots reggae to the dancehall by chanting steadfastly religious Rasta vocals and biting social commentary over some of the finest roots records of the day. His highly original and compelling chanting style made him the most popular and most imitated DJs since U-Roy and marked him as one of the greats. This album represents much of his early work, and although his style was to strengthen over the following years, there are some stunning tunes here brilliantly reworked and produced by Big Youth. Burning Spear's seminal "Marcus Garvey" and Yabby You's "Weakheart Drop" provide the best backdrops for his style and the result is a superb insight into the development of one of the greatest DJs of all time. -Duncan Thomson.

Review The Rough Guide to Lucky Dube / Lucky Dube:Perhaps reflecting Lucky Dube's own studiousness, The Rough Guide to Lucky Dube comes with a liner note of exemplary informativeness. Born in Transvaal in 1964, Lucky Dube, Africa's reggae-king, was passionate about history before he got bitten by the reggae bug, and spent his early manhood working as a librarian while chasing up Peter Tosh records in Zimbabwe. His first musical incarnation was as a singer of mbaqanga-the pop style that was sweeping the townships-but after Bob Marley's appearance at Zimbabwe's independence celebrations, Lucky chose the reggae route. His first reggae album was censored, but his second was passed and immediately established him as a top-selling African star. Since then he has collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Sting and Michael Jackson, starred at the Reggae Sunsplash Festival and Womad, and taken the rest of the world by storm. What's most striking about this retrospective collection is the consistency of both his style and his message: this is unashamedly commercial music, with super-slick backing and studio effects, but its spirit is that of a political crusade for decency between races and nations.
