Review Hot Shot / Shaggy:Orville Richard Burrell aka Shaggy has bounded back to the top with Hot Shot, 15 eclectic songs in the field somewhere between Reggae, Dancehall, Pop and R&B. Shaggy is energetically supported by producers such as Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and backs the usual melodies with his trademark irresistible rhythms. Songs such as the hit single "It Wasn't Me" and the groovy "Freaky Girl " are high points on the album and exemplify the wonderfully sung harmonies with his guest vocalists. In conclusion Shaggy has made a pop-reggae success which is very easy on the ear - Norbert Schiegl.

Review One Love: the Very Best of Bob Marley & the Wailers / Bob Marley:One Love, a remastered retrospective of Bob Marley's major-label work completed before his 1980 death from cancer, may well replace Legend as the bestselling reggae album of all time. One Love is 20 cuts to Legend's 16, a set that plays in chronological order of release as opposed to party mix. As with the latter, One Love presents the sweet organ-driven and feedback-scarred live version of "No Woman, No Cry" as well as album versions of classics like "I Shot the Sheriff", "Get Up, Stand Up", and "Jamming". Single versions of "Buffalo Soldier" and "Exodus" sidle up to the full-band cut of "Redemption Song" and the soulful Marley/Curtis Mayfield medley, "One Love/People Get Ready". A fine sampler of the Tuff Gong years from 1972's Catch a Fire and onward, One Love is aimed at the casual Marley fan rather than the hardcore completist. Review Roots Controller / Misty In Roots:The Southall roots reggae group Misty In Roots started out in 1978 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the hottest young bands around. Now, with Roots Controller, it's back. Originally led by brothers Walford and Delvin Tyson (who has since drowned), the band went on to record sporadically in the 80s, typically fusing political and ecological lyrics with an authentic roots style similar to that of fellow Londoners Aswad. After more than a decade-long recording sabbatical, the band returned to active duty in 2001 and subsequently recorded six new tracks for this formidable compilation. The gospel-tinged vocals, peppy horn charts and hypnotic rhythms are once again in full effect on the new material, with highlights "True Rasta" and "Cover Up" proving that Misty hasn't lost a step in its time away. The album is filled out by five select tunes from its 80s albums and two raw live tracks from 1979's phenomenal Live at the Counter Eurovision. Review Labour of Love Vol.1 / UB40:UB40 are not great innovators, but they are great imitators, and, in a sense, Labour of Love made them the Pat Boone of reggae. Featuring a handsome and clean-cut (by reggae standards) white singer, Ali Campbell, UB40 covered Jamaican standards and turned millions of Americans and Europeans on to another form of black music. Interestingly enough, the album's smash hit, "Red Red Wine", was a cover of a rocksteady cover of a Neil Diamond track. Being that UB40 had the pick of the reggae litter, Labour of Love is chock full of stellar material. From Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross" to the Melodians' "Sweet Sensation" to Johnny Clarke's "Keep On Moving", Labour of Love still serves as an excellent reggae starter kit. - Bill Crandall.
