Let the celebrations begin as Now That's What I Call Music has reached its 50th volume, a landmark that few other pop compilations can ever expect to reach. From back in the early 1980s, before CDs were even invented, a compilation emerged featuring current music by the original artists (a rare thing in those days) with a trendy-looking pig poking its head out on the glitzy cover. In 2001, Now 50 is a far cry from its shoulder-padded ancestor but the ideas and pop/crossover sensibility is exactly the same. CD1 runs like the four seasons with dance pop (such as Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head") blossoming into hip-hop and R&B (City High's "What Would You Do?"), heating up with rock & indie (AAF's "Smooth Criminal") and then cooling off with a series of sweet ballads (Gabrielle's "Don't Need the Sun to Shine"). CD2 is fun all the way with a few big dance tunes such as Iio's "Rapture" and the Supermen Lover's "Starlight", followed by some of those lingering hip-hop/R&B numbers such as Eve's "Let Me Blow Your Mind" and Mary J Blige's "Family Affair". There really are too many great songs to mention as the Now people have outdone themselves in putting together one of the best pop line-ups ever, befitting of the age and stature of the old duchess, Now That's What I Call Music. -David Trueman.

Now approaching its half-century, Now That's What I Call Music Vol. 48 brings us highlights of the season from the UK Top 40. It is more apparent than ever how diverse popular music has become since its predecessor Now That's What I Call Music Vol. 47 was released. Who would have thought back then that we'd be given the angsty rock of Papa Roach ("Last Resort") on the same compilation as Eva Cassidy ("Somewhere Over the Rainbow") and S Club 7 ("Never Had a Dream Come True"). If that was not enough, CD 1 boasts three of the biggest singles from early 2001, the irrepressible Shaggy ("It Wasn't Me), the sing-along Atomic Kitten ("Whole Again") and if you haven't had enough already, everyone's favourite Popstars, Hear'Say ("Pure & Simple"). If you're going to buy a sturdy compilation of hits from the pop charts, Now That's What I Call Music 53 is the one to get. Weathering the storm for many years, the brand has survived thanks to its blend of pop, rock, soul and dance. This instalment includes a good selection of number ones from DJ Sammy ("Heaven") and the Sugababes ("Round Round"), to name but two. Other pop favourites include Blue ("One Love"), Las Ketchup ("Ketchup Song") and Darius with his number one "Colourblind". On an indie guitar note, there's the giant "In My Place" by Coldplay and "Check the Meaning" by ex-Verve Richard Ashcroft. From the heavy rock camp there's Puddle of Mudd ("She Hates Me") and Bowling for Soup ("Girl All the Bad Guys Want") and in the urban corner there's Eminem's "Without Me" and "Ms Dynamite's "Dy-Na-My-Tee". As ever there are bizarre inclusions: it's hard to imagine anyone listening to the likes of Liberty X or Britney Spears then getting deep down and dirty with Status Quo or Eva Cassidy but at the end of the day, diversity is the nature of this beast. -Georgina Collins.

Well if you thought the last one was a tough act to follow then check out the track listing for Now That's What I Call Music 51. As ever there's a bit of everything so as not to get too bogged down in the whole teen-pop aesthetic, making it more a collection of popular songs from the "hit parade" rather than a tribute to Britney, the Club et all. So, in no particular order, there's classic rock from the Stereophonics and Nickelback, feisty rock from Sum 41 and Alien Ant Farm which is preceded by a conveniently placed twilight pasture at the end of disc one with Geri and Vicki lumped with the Allstars (a Bucks Fizz cover?!?) and Hear'say (they won 2001's Popstars show). But thankfully the rest is non-stop popular music excitement with number ones from Enrique Iglesias ("Hero"), Daniel Bedingfield ("Gotta Get Thru This"), Aaliyah ("More Than A Woman"), Robbie & Nicole ("Something Stupid") and S Club 7 ("Have You Ever"). Dancey highlights include DB Boulevard, Lasgo and the Chemical Brothers with R&B from queen Mary J Blige and a smidgen of hip-hop crossover from Ja Rule with Ashanti but with far too many "choons" to mention, the best thing would be to have a peek and see for yourself. -Georgina Collins.
