If music be the food of love, then record companies must think it's a good idea to stuff our faces full of it hence The Love Album Classics, one of many that seem to surface around early February. We're talking about love songs of course, the stirring, heartfelt tunes that score countless relationships while soundtracking a million subsequent break ups. This middle of the road collection holds few surprises, peddling out a fairly innocuous stream of cupid's favourites. If you want love's tried and tested, then look no further. Nicole Kidman and Robbie William's sugary take on "Something Stupid" says it all really, sitting dreamily next to hardy perennials like Sinead O' Connor's tear-stained "Nothing Compares 2 U", school disco favourite "True" and the histrionic "Without You" from Nilsson. There's a few gems amongst the dross, though, with smoochers from Al Green, Bill Withers and Bobby Gentry's defiant weepie, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". Prescient advice perhaps. -Paul Tierney.

Say the words "love song" to anyone, and it immediately brings to mind slushy romantic ballads as popularised by Celine Dion. The New Love Album, may well claim to be something different, but the evidence is there for all to see-"Against All Odds" from Phil Collins, "True" by Spandau Ballet and "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin-all great tracks, but great slushy romantic tracks. There are some more upbeat tracks included under the "Love" umbrella-Ronan Keating's "Life Is A Rollercoaster", The Rembrandts "I'll Be There For You", Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me" and Lene Marlin's "Sitting Down Here", and to be fair Celine herself doesn't put in an appearance, although her career pinnacle "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic appears courtesy of the capable vocal chords of Hannah Morris. It also features one of the greatest love songs of the 20th century-Robbie Williams' "Angels", which single-handedly increased the credibility of the love song, taking it away from the schmaltzy sentimentality of the school of Celine and giving it some real heart and emotion. Whereas former Street Vibes compilations showcased the best in R&B from the UK and points beyond, the 40-track, double-CD Street Vibes Volume 5 finds itself encroaching upon the world of the pop charts. Fortunately, this is not necessarily a bad thing, as the upper ranges of the pop charts frequently find themselves invaded by the world of R&B. And so, Disc One of Street Vibes Volume 5 is packed with crossover classics by artists such as Jamelia ("Money"), Pink ("There You Go"), Angie Stone ("Life Story") and TLC ("No Scrubs"). Disc Two, meanwhile, is packed with a number of less obvious tracks, including Sisqo's "Got To Get It" (Why not hit single "Thong Song"?) as well as submissions by the more-pop-than-R&B All Saints, Heather Small, Christina Aguilera and Lyte Funky Ones. -Michael Carter.
