Review Massive Classics / Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra:Featuring music by 25 composers ranging from Mozart to Zimmer (best known as the composer of the Gladiator film score), Massive Classics is a two-CD compilation brimming with stirring and dramatic music, much of which is familiar through its use in television and film. It's also packaged in handy, bite-sized chunks. For example, we're given the opening to Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra (as used in 2001: A Space Odyssey) and an excerpt of Holst's thundering "Mars" from The Planets. This approach works well, although occasionally there is something more substantial to sink your teeth into-the glorious nine-minute closing scene from Wagner's Götterdämmerung (the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra white-hot under Georg Solti) and Zimmer's "The Battle" from Gladiator are both real treats. While this is not a CD with much subtlety in the selections (it promises 39 explosive tracks and that's what you get), and is great fun both on its own and as a springboard to further discovery. -Stephen Chamberlain.
