Review The Best of Carly Simon / Carly Simon:Almost any way you look at it, the Carly Simon of the '70s was pretty cool. Her acerbic wit and nasally expressive voice had people comparing her to Carole King, but there was also a weary androgyny to her that wouldn't be seen again until the arrival of Chrissy Hynde. Her songs rocked without quite being rock songs, and were folk-evocative without falling into the singer-songwriter bins. She scored multiple singles hits yet pulled off albums with the best of her contemporaries. This is an early collection, so it misses "Nobody Does It Better" and other later hits. Regardless, nearly all the songs here are worth having. Flavorful and nourishing-and a good package, besides. -Gavin McNett.

Review LifeBlood / Manic Street Preachers:Testing times for the Manic Street Preachers: their seventh studio album, Lifeblood, comes hot on the heels of a commercial flop-2001's brave but unfocused Know Your Enemy-and renewed rumours that the band themselves are in the twilight of their existence. One thing's for sure, this is the right record at the right time: inspired by the widescreen melancholy of post-punk acts New Order, early U2, and The Cure, this "elegiac pop" LP finds the Manics acting their age, shelving the slash'n'burn punk in favour of a sound that is simultaneously graceful, epic and for these dedicated controversialists, unusually low-key. The album's lead-off single, the disco-lite "The Love Of Richard Nixon", is a meandering dud-but luckily it's book-ended by a couple of strong tracks: the string-laden "1985", which both sings the praises of The Smiths and quotes Nietzsche, and "Empty Souls" (with its "Collapsing like the Twin Towers/ Falling down like April showers," couplet - one of the few tracks here that boasts that good ol' Manics trait of near-to-the-knuckle motor-mouthing). Quality elsewhere is variable - there's a couple of tracks here so inoffensively beige we won't waste words - but it's worth hanging around for "Cardiff Afterlife", a sweet closer decorated with harp and vibraphone. -Louis Pattison.

Review 18 Til I Die / Bryan Adams:Bryan Adams is a Bruce Springsteen for blue collar workers. Perennially in love with rock & roll, on this mid-90s album he struts his stuff with an unselfconscious, schoolboy swagger. "I'll be 18 'til I die", the Canadian boasts on the title track-and this determination is soon made apparent on unsubtle tracks like "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You", the appallingly-titled "Your Underwear (I Wanna Be)" and "Black Pearl" (a paean to black women, crooned about in lazy stereotypes). The 12-bar boogie rules on this album-that is, when Adams isn't falling back on his Unique Selling Point, The Ballad, as on the epic "I Think About You". Still, many hipsters enjoy Adams more than they'd care to admit, and 18 Til I Die is such snotty, unashamed Cochran-loving rock, it's hard not to feel affection for it. -Everett True.

Review In My Tribe / 10,000 Maniacs:In My Tribe was 10,000 Maniacs' second (and best) album and the record that made the band collegiate favourites and singer/songwriter Natalie Merchant a star. Producer Peter Asher's rich balance of acoustic and electric instruments gave muscle to the group's folk-rock. "Hey Jack Kerouac" found Merchant musing on the literary beats of the 1950s but the song's musical hook was the rich bed of rhythm guitars laid atop the solid drums. "Don't Talk" offered a similarly propulsive rock sound, with lyrics that advised troubled lovers to keep it to themselves. REM singer Michael Stipe offered hipster credibility by guesting on "A Campfire Song", while a cover of Cat Stevens's "Peace Train" offered listeners a familiar port of entry. However, when Muslim convert Stevens announced his support of Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini's call for the execution of Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie, the band rereleased the album without "Peace Train". -John Milward.

Review Mystery White Boy / Jeff Buckley:Most live albums are usually a pretty tawdry affair, blighted by the whoops and catcalls of a teeming mass of drunken humanity. But Mystery White boy, taken from Buckley's eight-month world tour of the same name, is not just any old live album. Such was the reverence granted to Buckley's electrifying confessionals that hardly a whimper issued from the audience in 78 minutes-not, at least, until each gargantuan heart-and-soul epic ended. Buckley was no small-time singer songwriter-he treated music like it was epic Shakespearean tragedy, and it's this grandiosity of performance that makes "Grace" and "Mojo Pin" at least the equal of their recorded counterparts. The gems, though, are the cover versions found here-especially the closing nine-minute rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" that lurches into a whispered chorus of the Smiths' "I Know It's Over" as it passes away. This is an utterly captivating live album. -Louis Pattison.

Review The Greatest Songs of the Sixties / Barry Manilow:The premise is debatable (can you really call a disc with only one Beatles song a compendium of top '60s tunes?), but the product is anything but. The success of The Greatest Songs of the Fifties, released eight months prior to this latest exercise in musical time-travel, must have stoked Barry Manilow's interpretive skills, or else he's more a flowerchild at heart than his once overly wide lapels and disco shoes let on. Because formulaic as this disc is, it bespeaks a not easily achieved vocal mastery and a gift for gently prying a song away from its original owner. Which is to say it's better than its predecessor. Hand Manilow a Righteous Brothers tune ("You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'") and he magically minimizes its scale, making it seem more intimate still; pass him a classic made famous by both the Carpenters and Herman's Hermits ("There's a Kind of Hush"), and instead of sending his listeners off on undulating waves of nostalgia, he quietly makes them aware he should have sung it all along (no offense, Herman). "Cherish/Windy," a medley with the Association, works well, but it's the Bacharach numbers that will nudge themselves to the top of easy-listening fans' favourites lists. "This Guy's in Love with You," "What the World Needs Now is Love," and "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," memorable as the original renditions are, have been reawakened; given the Manilow spin, they become the kind of songs the whole world wants to sing. -Tammy La Gorce.

Review Shrek The Third / Soundtrack:Anybody who owns the first two Shrek soundtracks knows that ogres inspire not only charming films but great music-last time out, Pete Yorn, Counting Crows, and Joseph Arthur left monster-sized impressions, and the original movie let loose a masterful rendition of "Hallelujah" by a still-under-the-radar Rufus Wainwright. This go-round the proceedings are playful but backward-looking: Fergie's freewheeling take on the Heart standby "Barracuda" leavens Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle," and Wolfmother's guitar-heavy "Joker and the Thief" stands up straighter than classic rock fans might like alongside Led Zeppelin's classic "Immigrant Song. " Eels returns, this time with two doleful but sweet selections, and Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas again cut up (but still manage to carry off) a classic: Here, Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again)" gives up the funk and the fun. The court will be split on a certain actor's absence from the disc; King Arthur, played by Justin Timberlake, might have done a mean cover of Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin. " But we'll never know. -Tammy La Gorce.

Review Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie / Alanis Morissette:When Alanis Morissette visited Mother India in 1997, she gained new composure and, in a state of numinous bliss, wrote 17 songs for Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, each suffused with the search for enlightenment and self-knowledge. To the likely dismay of many fans, Morissette now rages at herself. But this long-awaited follow-up to 1995's record-smashing Jagged Little Pill is far from a disappointment. Imbued with dark, swirling psychedelic licks borrowed from Jimmy Page's song book, the disc is paradoxically both more enigmatic and revealing than Pill. And while Junkie shows that Morissette is no less stingy about revealing herself to her fans-her staccato stream-of-consciousness style is again employed to surrender her secrets and foibles a little too easily in these tales of abuse, lost love, and self-flagellation-Junkie also makes one wonder what this musical sphinx holds back. In "Baba" she takes on competitive spirituality, sneering at the fashionable grasp for enlightenment. "Would Not Come" returns to a similar theme-taking us on a tour of her diary. "Would Not Come" and "Your House" offer the only hints of sexual innuendo. The only revenge she wreaks on an errant lover is in the percussive "Are You Still Mad", this time dishing up a much subtler payback than on "You Oughta Know". The record's standouts, meanwhile, are "Thank U" and the hip-poppy "So Pure". [+]
One complaint (and there is only one): Morissette's rapid-fire wordplay is at times engulfed by ponderous instrumentation. The worldbeat rhythms and elaborate guitar play add fresh twists to the album, but they also sometimes bury her message. -Jaan Uhelszki.
