Review Dusk and Summer / Dashboard Confessional:

While usually lumped in with the sensitive souls of emotional hardcore, Dashboard Confessional - the stage name of Conneticut-born singer-songwriter Chris Carrabba - has traditionally cut a much more intimate, acoustic-tinged furrow. Dusk And Summer, however, sees Carrabba spirit up a much denser, rockier instrumentation that should see long-term fans harking back to his '90s outfit, Further Seems Forever. Is Chris risking it all, leaving his own introspective headspace and traipsing back to the crowded landscape of US rock? Not necessarily - 'Rooftops And Invitations' makes a decent fist of melding a balladry of passion and restraint with some pluming, U2-style dynamics, while 'Don't Wait' proves that the acoustic guitar still lies at the centre of the Dashboard design. Fans should also cock an ear to 'So Long So Long', a hushed piano duet with Adam Duritz of Counting Crows with a lyric that plays to their collective talent for misty-eyed nostalgia: "How the girls can turn to ghosts before your eyes/ And the very dreams that led to them are keeping them from dying". Newcomers might want to start elsewhere - Dusk And Summer is far from representative of their style - but if each Dashboard album is a page in Carrabba's own personal journal, it's clear there's still many pages to be written. -Louis Pattison.

Review Trailer Park / Beth Orton:

Having collaborated with such dance acts as Red Snapper and the Chemical Brothers, singer-songwriter Beth Orton is sometimes regarded as a young folky hitching a ride on the electronica bandwagon. On Trailer Park, however, she harks back to a lost Seventies tradition whose exponents included Traffic, Tim Buckley and especially John Martyn, all of whom worked in a hazy interface between jazz, blues and folk. Fleshed out with multiple layers of vibes, strings and keyboards, Trailer Park is at once a soul-searching and sensual album, with Orton's flat-edged and indistinct lyrics often seeming to melt in her own mouth. Only "Sweetest Decline", featuring Dr John on keyboards seems slightly twee. Otherwise on the likes of "Couldn't Cause Me Harm" and "Feel To Believe", the pleasures and pains of love are conveyed so tangibly it almost hurts. -David Stubbs.

Review Ill Communication / The Beastie Boys:

By 1994 the Beasties had settled into their cultural role as the grand arbiters of cool, and Ill Communication is pretty much a catalogueof coolness: live funk, a bit of hardcore, ingenious samples of obscure records, keyboards by analogue master Money Mark, guest shots by Q-Tip and Biz Markie, MCA's cop-show metal number "Sabotage" and the inevitable cascade of witty old-school rhymes. But it's also a surprisingly mature record from a band that had, after all, been at it for 12 years already. The original jazz-funk instrumentals hold their own with the group's favourite sample sources. Their voices are modestly buried in the mix, and they've tempered their old snottiness with lyrical compassion: check out "Bodhisattva Vow", a salute to Buddhist spirituality. -Douglas Wolk.

Review Seal IV / Seal:

After five years and one do-over later, Seal presents a fourth album, Seal IV, that finds the singer growing with his audience. The opener "Get It Together" melds a quiet "live" moment into a horn-and-string disco number, setting the stage for the rest of the album, which is largely a nod to Detroit and Philly R&B. The UK-born musician pulls it off. His rasp and emotive, positive vocals are well suited for the retro stylings he attempts. "Waiting for You" will flood the dance floor, and he's unafraid to dig deep for the ballads-Marvin Gaye would approve. The funk is real, but saddled with a pop safety net, and the upbeat tracks need a helping hand from a good remixer before they are as compelling as his seminal singles "Killer" and "Crazy". Seal never goes all out in any direction and this coolness, combined with Trevor Horn's perfectionist production, plants the album inescapably in the realm of adult contemporary (although this is as good as adult contemporary gets). On "Let Me Roll", Seal salutes the album's influences by proclaiming he's "not too proud to beg". If that were actually true, the songs would have been that much better for it. -Beth Massa.

Review The Best Christmas Album In The World Ever / Various Artists:

A good Christmas compilation should contain the following things-a selection of old classics to warm your cockles by the fireside, some of the classic pop titles that people always seem to find themselves singing along to in the pub on Christmas Eve, some carols and a handful of oddities to keep everyone on their toes. The Best Christmas Album in the World Ever manages to fulfil all these criteria-on the classic front there is Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Dean Martin's "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow", on the classic pop front there's Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody" and Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", traditional carols "Silent Night" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" head the field and as far as oddities go, look no further than the double whammy of "Lonely Pup (In A Christmas Shop)", courtesy of Adam Faith, and "Angels" by Robbie Williams (a pretty tenuous inclusion, especially considering the angel in the title is his mum). All in all, small gripes aside, The Best Christmas Album In The World Ever manages to live up to its name. -Helen Marquis.

Review Young Americans: Remastered / David Bowie:

By 1975, when Young Americans was originally released, people were accustomed to being surprised by David Bowie. Even so, his decision to immerse himself in the traditions of Philadelphia soul raised eyebrows to heights rarely witnessed before or since. In retrospect, Young Americans occupies a reasonably logical place in the Bowie canon, containing both faint echoes of the glam excess of the preceding Diamond Dogs and subtle hints of Bowie's encroaching cocaine paranoia that would result, a year later, in the compellingly deranged Station To Station. It has never been in Bowie's nature to do things by halves, and he went about making Young Americans with the demented energy that has propelled his career to such towering altitudes and such horrifying depths (guest musicians included John Lennon, Luther Vandross and David Sanborn). The quality control was certainly uneven-the album contains such great moments as the title track, "Fame" and "Win", and a lot of wishy-washy fillers, even by Bowie's standards. But, taken as a whole, Young Americans remains one of the most influential records of Bowie's influential career. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Tumbleweed Connection / Elton John:

Tumbleweed Connection is part of the early catalogue of Elton John's work that Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose reportedly once said he would love to own the publishing rights to as a work of art. Indeed, it does contain some of John's most expressive work as an artist, but with the showy stage presence and pop melodicism still under construction. Tumbleweed is characterized by John's balladeer approach, with John at his storyteller best on songs like "Burn Down the Mission. " Even if the lyrics were generally written by Bernie Taupin, John's voice and inflection made every song seem deeply personal. The beautiful "Come Down in Time" displays the subtleties and sophistication of his talent, with the piano not yet serving as the instrumental focal point it would later become. The album also features the favourite "Ballad of a Well-Known Gun" and "Where to Now St. Peter?" -Steve Gdula.

Review Music from the O.C. - Mix 2 / Original TV Soundtrack:

If you're a fan of the OC - and if you're reading this you probably are - then this may be the compilation for you. It starts off by alternating between lively, usually upbeat indie rock tracks from the likes of The Eels, The Killers and The Thrills, and more downbeat, angsty, sometimes frankly depressing tunes like Patrick Park's "Something Pretty" and the Super Furry Animals' "Hello Sunshine". Scattered among these are occasional gems like Dios' "You Got Me All Wrong", but the CD seems to run out of A-list material somewhat before the end. Now that the OC has a 'live' band on every week, many of the bands featured on the CD have performed their songs on the series itself, which should provide hard-core fans with a warm nostalgic glow… however, the intimate ties between the series and the CD are this compilation's weakness as well as its strength. So although it may save you from buying some disappointing albums, this one has to be recommended for OC addicts only. -Peter Farnell.
