Review Devils & Dust [CD + DVD] / Bruce Springsteen:The last time Bruce Springsteen ventured West for inspiration, the result was the desolate Nebraska and its tales of serial killers and used cars. On his first record in three years, Springsteen navigates barren deserts and Old West war fields for a dozen forlorn songs that co-star the artist and his acoustic guitar. Though he's always had a knack for carving out the hooks and melodies that make each journey memorable, this time around Springsteen relies on the lyrics to carry the tune-desperate tales of tragedy, heartbreak, and lust with a Latino twist, like the boxer coming home ("The Hitter"), a distressing border-crossing incident ("Matamoros Banks"), and the Nevada hooker with good intentions ("Reno," which led to the warning sticker Adult Imagery). With no E Street Band in the mix, the album is decorated with horns and strings and Springsteen's novel falsetto on two his best efforts: "Maria's Bed," where the narrator comes home to his woman after 40 nights on the road, and the fast-picking "All I'm Thinkin' About," where he has more than Carolina on his mind. Review War - Remastered / U2:The final album of U2's early period, before the group broadened its sonic palette and lyrical vision, War is a brilliantly conflicted album, sounding martial and majestic while its very purpose is to tear down false idols propped up by politics. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "40" take the subject of Northern Ireland's troubles head-on, while it's the subtext of "New Year's Day", which is about a sundered love relationship symbolic of a greater division. "Torn in two, we can be one," Bono pleads, as Edge's guitar scratches and snarls behind him. Songs such as "Two Hearts Beat as One" and the delicate "Drowning Man" take a back seat here, but they help make War a compelling and well-rounded album. -Daniel Durchholz.

Review Wowee Zowee: Sordid Sentinels Edition / Pavement:Their most willfully oblique and bizarre release, Wowee Zowee sees Pavement eschewing the noisy pop aesthetic of Slanted And Enchanted and straightforward songs of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain to delve deeper into the warped psyche of their deliciously odd music. Songs like "Rattled By The Rush" are still as lovely as always, with Steve Malkmus's melodious vocals coasting over lo-fi guitar fuzz; but elsewhere, the music flits from folk to music-hall twee to country with disorientating abandon. It's a fragmented and highly cryptic ride; and in typically perverse Pavement fashion, it is only after repeated listens that the kaleidoscope of musical styles start to slot into place. Those who persevere, however, will find their efforts richly rewarded. -Amber Cowan.

Review Bubblegum / Mark Lanegan Band:Bubblegum is Mark Lanegan's sixth solo album, but still he's relatively unknown to all but a few. Since going solo, the former Screaming Trees frontman has attracted a cult following, but if a man can be judged by the stature of his friends, then surely Bubblegum marks the beginning of Lanegan's turn in the spotlight. Featuring such high-profile guests including PJ Harvey ("Hit the City" and "Come to Me"), Guns n'Roses / Velvet Revolver's Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan ("Strange Religion"), Afghan Whigs / Twilight Singers' frontman Greg Dulli ("Methamphetamine Blues") and Masters of Reality's Chris Goss (who shares production credits, as well as appearing on a number of songs), the songs on Bubblegum display a breadth of style that matches Lanegan's trademark depth of substance. And though he kept his profile comparatively low as a longterm collaborator with Queens of the Stone Age, his two bandmates Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri feature heavily throughout (Homme, in particular, plays guitar or drums on five of the tracks here). But this is by no means a QOTSA album. Bubblegum has a sound all its own, and Lanegan is firmly at the helm, with his gravelly voice and sombre observations making him sound more and more like Tom Waits. Its pleasures may not be immediate to all listeners, but once found, they're difficult to shake. -Robert Burrow.

Review American Beauty / Thomas Newman:We knew Thomas Newman was versatile (he's created gripping soundtracks for everything from The Shawshank Redemption to Desperately Seeking Susan), but his score for American Beauty is simply gorgeous and one his best. Filled with inventive instrumentation-tablas, bird calls, dulcimer, banjo, ukulele, detuned mandolin, and more-the score varies between highly rhythmic, world-music influenced passages ("Dead Already," "Lunch with the King") and the more subdued ("Mr. Smarty-Man," "American Beauty"). Throughout, Newman's score is inventive and a great complement to the dark comedy's numerous mood swings. The movie's other soundtrack-a collection of memorable alt-rock tracks-gave us just a sampling of this score. Here's the rest. It's short (37 minutes) but sweet. -Jason Verlinde.

Review Complete Greatest Hits (2CD) / Eagles:This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members-mostly Henley and Frey-in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do. -Rickey Wright.
