Review Nirvana / Nirvana:Though fans will endlessly argue about the selection of tracks (what, no "Breed"?), there's no denying that the songs on Nirvana are all classics. Nirvana were the most influential band of their generation, galvanising the then-underground indie scene and bringing their music to the masses. Though their career was cut short by the suicide of singer and songwriter Kurt Cobain, they left in their wake a massive shift in popular music and popular culture, much like punk a generation earlier (or the Beatles before that). The 14 tracks on Nirvana chart their career, from the first album on Sub Pop ("About a Girl") to the song ("Smells Like Teen Spirit") and album (Nevermind) that changed everything, and the subsequent rarities collection (Incesticide's "Sliver", "Been a Son"), the superb follow-up album (In Utero's "Rape Me", "Heart-Shaped Box", "Pennyroyal Tea") and their classic MTV Unplugged session ("The Man Who Sold the World"). For fans and completists, there's even a previously unreleased track, "You Know You're Right". Of course, it's a superb collection, but at 14 tracks it seems a bit short. Here's hoping there's a double-CD version just around the corner. Maybe even a box set

Review Deserter's Songs / Mercury Rev:That Mercury Rev avoided a messy, chemically-assisted burnout in the middle of the 1990s is remarkable; that they should return in 1998 with an album as fine as Deserter's Songs is almost unfeasible. But working by the old adage that "what does not kill us makes us stronger", Deserter's Songs is an album of unparalleled scope. Drawing on the legacy of America's pioneers and the nascent scenes of folk-rock and psychedelia, Mercury Rev have formed a living, breathing piece of heritage. "Holes" is dizzied in America's vast scope, and warmed by woodwind instruments, mellotrons and a Wurlitzer organ. It sounds like a beautiful climax, but it's only the first song, and there's better to come, what with the weathered "Goddess On A Hiway" and "Opus 40". Deserter's Songs is one of the essential American albums at the end of the 1990s. It's hard to see that they-or anyone-can top it. -Louis Pattison.

Review Mer De Noms / A Perfect Circle:Somewhere inside every alternative metal band lurks a platinum-selling stadium rock act looking for a way out; Perfect Circle appear intended to be Tool front man Maynard James Keenan's ticket to the big time. While Tool's uncompromising take on industrial goth metal have taken them so far, Keenan clearly dreams of bigger things: there are moments on Mer De Noms, notably "Rose", that are in meaningful danger of being confused with Jethro Tull and others, which call to mind the most wretched excesses of Whitesnake. Though there are plenty of worse metal albums out there, it is hard to imagine what conceivable use Mer De Noms will serve. -Andrew Mueller.

Review So Far So Good: a Collection of the Best of Bryan Adams / Bryan Adams:So Far So Good offers up 13 of his previous hits plus a new song, "Please Forgive Me", a gooey, Michael Bolton-like ballad. The album starts out with "Summer of 69", the appealing autobiographical song about the 10-year-old Adams learning to play his first guitar in Ontario, and includes "(Everything I Do) I Do for You", the synth-laced ballad that wound up in the Guinness Book of World Records after topping the British singles charts for 16 weeks. With its over-the-top, gravelly vocals, So Far So Good reminds one of Rod Stewart's 1980s work when he was coasting on past achievements. Unfortunately, Adams has never had a period like Stewart's glory years in the 1970s. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review ...a Place on Earth: the Greatest Hits / Belinda Carlisle:Once upon a time, there was a lovely, New Wave girl group called the Go-Go's. They were poppy enough for the charts, but raw enough for the indie kids-everybody loved them and their warbly, cute-as-a-button singer Belinda Carlisle. But Belinda was unhappy; she wanted to go it alone, and why not? If Debbie was Blondie, then Belinda was the Go-Go's. So, in 1984, she quit the group and began her solo career, polishing her rough edge until it had a smooth, MOR sheen. That's when the hits started coming thick and fast: "Circle In The Sand", "Heaven Is A Place On Earth", "I Get Weak"-all huge and omnipresent throughout the 1980s. They're all collected here, with the notable exception of her first hit "Mad About You" from her debut album, Belinda. Apparently, she even kept on recording solo material right into the 1990s, but few people noticed. -Robert Burrow.

Review Traffic / Traffic:Thirty years of rock radio have cast Traffic largely in the context of its later years as songwriter, singer, and keyboard player Steve Winwood's platform for jazz-inflected progressive rock, but their second, self-titled 1968 album reflects the equal weight of guitarist Dave Mason's voice, guitar, and songs. Together with drummer and third vocalist Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood's evocative sax and flute, this is Traffic at its most earthy, most concise, and arguably most coherent-even when the bulk of the songs are set as fevered dreams, surreal ballads, or outright nightmares. Winwood showcases like "Pearly Queen" and "Forty Thousand Headmen" are matched by Mason's classic "Feelin' Alright" and Beatle-browed "You Can All Join In", while the playing and arrangements are spirited and tight. -Sam Sutherland.

Review Madman Across The Water / Elton John:Named for a cut that originally appeared on his Tumbleweed Connection album, Madman Across the Water yielded some of Elton John's earliest AOR staples. "Tiny Dancer", like the previous "Your Song", was introduced and carried by John's masterful piano composition. The song's sense of longing also employed the falsetto chorus that would become as much of a trademark as his costumes. "Levon", another entry into the John/Taupin "ballad of" category, is one of their finest pieces. The orchestration gives the song not only its sense of foreboding, but also its release of tension as the song ends. "Rotten Peaches" became a favourite, as did "Holiday Inn". There's also a different interpretation of the title track than appeared on Tumbleweed Connection. -Steve Gdula.

Review Blaze Of Glory / Jon Bon Jovi:It must have been a hard job enlisting someone to write to music for Young Guns II. There simply aren't many great songwriters capable of overblown rock ballads which keep a straight face long enough to move you. Jon Bon Jovi, though, is not without a certain pedigree in this department: "Livin' On A Prayer", "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive" are masterpieces of the genre that deserve far more respect than received wisdom would have you believe. And the good news is that-on Young Guns II-there is plenty more where that came from. You may be familiar with the hit single "Blaze Of Glory"; it sounds positively restrained next to "Blood Money" and "Never Say Die". There is something tremendously likeable about Jon Bon Jovi at the best of times. Like his New Jersey(tm) role model Bruce Springsteen, the blue collar sensibility has weathered the ascension to superstardom. Unlike Bruce though, Jon Bon Jovi is more than happy to dash off unabashed epics for post-brat pack celluloid homages to John Ford, boasting titles such as "Justice In The Barrel" and "Dyin' Ain't Much Of A Livin'". In a profession already bursting with people who take themselves too seriously, this is undoubtedly a good thing. -Peter Paphides.
