Review Melting Pot: The Best of The Charlatans / The Charlatans:The Charlatans are the sole survivors of the Madchester boom, and Melting Pot commemorates this, a 17 track "Best of" running from 1990 to 1997. It's chronological tracklist let's you follow their development, beginning with the wonderful wah-wah and hammond organ psychedelia of "The Only One I Know" (a shame "Indian Rope" wasn't included, too). Back then you could call The Charlatans endearing: Tim Burgess' vocals were fragile, the guitars chiming in that peculiarly, shambling English indie way. Rather than fading away like their peers, on Melting Pot you hear The Charlatans' sound get stronger and better over the years. It switches up a gear with the Flood-produced, rockier "Weirdo" era and the magnificent Chemical Brothers "Patrol" mix and swells into awesome bluesy, Rolling Stones-style anthems under Steve Hillage's direction in 1994. By the album's end, their confidence is brimming over and, with Byrds-esque guitar, they¹re producing proper kick ass rock & roll. A celebration of growing up in public. -Sarah Champion.

Review Let's Dance: Remastered / David Bowie:When Bowie returned to music-making after an unprecedented three year break, looking tanned, healthy and suited for the first time in his career, it was with this relatively clean-cut album to match. Although featuring another definite new direction, with co-producer Nile Rodgers of Chic helping produce a stylish post-disco dance sound, the Let's Dance is a mixed bag. Much of the album's success was due to its three danceable hit singles: "China Girl", a sensuous Bowie/Iggy Pop collaboration already recorded by the latter, the distinctive "Modern Love" and the funky title track. However, most of the rest of the album is bland and vapid, marking the start of a period of serious decline in Bowie's songwriting skills. A cover of Metro's "Criminal World" and "Cat People" are the only two other strong tracks, although the latter-previously released as a single in 1982-is not a patch on the original version. The re-release of Let's Dance includes the Bowie/Queen collaboration "Under Pressure". Although far from a highlight of the work of either of the artists involved, it is nevertheless a welcome addition for completists. -James Swift.

Review The Colour and the Shape / Foo Fighters:A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour and the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There is even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars", whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. -Rickey Wright.

Review Songs For The Front Row - The Best Of / Ocean Colour Scene:Songs for the Front Row collects the best tracks from the Moseley Shoals quartet Ocean Colour Scene. Though critics may not like this smart, soulful Birmingham outfit, there's no denying that OCS-like the early work of their mentor Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher in his less boisterous moments, the Small Faces or the Yardbirds-manage to tap into a certain strain of Englishness usually ignored by trendier outfits. It's all here: from the Chris Evans-championed "The Riverboat Song", to festival favourites such as "Profit in Peace", the irresistibly jaunty "Mechanical Wonder" and the Stonesy blues of "You've Got It Bad". Every groove oozes passion and self-belief, every last Motown-influenced bassline and Mod blast of guitar boasts pride. Derided as this Moseley Shoals quartet may well be-and sure, their music can veer worryingly into syrupy ballad territory, particularly on slower numbers such as "Beautiful Thing"-they've had their great moments. -Everett True.

Review American Graffiti / Soundtrack:For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks-"At the Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis'Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes-from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys-and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. -Jim Emerson.

Review Films About Ghosts (The Best Of Counting Crows) / Counting Crows:Four studio albums into their hugely successful career, Counting Crows' present the requisite "Best Of" package, Films About Ghosts. Spanning the 10 years since August and Everything After slow-burnt its way into homes across the world, it also features two new songs (as is the standard these days), their recent cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" and a live bonus track. Newie "Friend of the Devil" is a rousing, acoustic addition that distantly echoes "Walking in Memphis", and "She Don't Want Nobody Near" is rockier, balancing out some of the more sedated moments here. Interestingly, there are a mammoth five tracks from August
compared with just two from 2002's Hard Candy ("Holiday in Spain" and "American Girls"-ill advised covers don't count) and a couple from This Desert Life. This is hardly surprising considering the disparity between their first and last albums, although they have not suffered in quite the same way that Hootie and the Blowfish have done. Recovering The Satellites is thankfully better represented and tracks such as "A Long December" and "Angels of the Silences" deserve their status so high up in the tracklisting. Films About Ghosts is an essential starting point for anyone coming to the Crows for the first time, and a fine collection that will no doubt please most of their earliest fans too. -Cortman Virtue.

Review Wingspan: Hits and History / Paul McCartney & Wings:Wingspan could be the collection that finally gives Wings the respect that they've long been due. Some people are wary of Wings simply because knocking them is the done thing. Others are dubious because they've actually tried listening to London Town or Red Rose Speedway all the way through. It's a truism that without a vociferous writing partner, Paul McCartney's sense of quality control could be rather lax, but it's easy to overlook how many fine tracks he and Wings produced from 1970 to 1983, the period covered on Wingspan. Compiling 40 of them on a two-CD set is a smart move-it allows you to purchase pretty much every post-Beatles McCartney song you could ever possibly want, all at once. The hits crowd together on the first disc, while the second cherry-picks album tracks and oddities; forget the inevitable "Mull of Kintyre", let "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Waterfalls" and "Back Seat of My Car" remind you of just what Paul McCartney could always do when he tried. -Taylor Parkes.
