Review Loveless / My Bloody Valentine:After My Bloody Valentine had undergone their massive metamorphosis from twee indie-poppers to guitar noiseniks on 1988's Isn't Anything, their eagerly anticipated follow-up was a long time coming. Rumours abounded of massive studio bills, and when the album finally arrived, it listed 18 engineering credits. At times, Loveless is 90 per cent pure studio overmatter-but that doesn't matter. Band leader Kevin Shield's element was the guitar overdub, creating an intoxicating headrush of varispeed, warped, electro-static effects. "To Here Knows When" remains unmatched as an experiment in just how much sonic dissonance a simple pop melody can bear, while Bilinda Butcher sings drowsily as if concussed by the sweet noise. Loveless isn't a case of form over content-the lyrical subject matter of dazed infatuation is perfectly illustrated by the snowblind guitar sound. After this, MBVmoved to Island and remained notoriously unproductive for years, perhaps unsure how to top this. -David Stubbs.

Review The Boy With No Name / Travis:The Boy with No Name, the fifth album by Scots alt-rockers Travis is their first offering since 2004's Singles. First impressions are of a band eager to break new ground - a positive sign given Travis haven't impressed for what feels like far too long. Opening track "3 Times and You Lose," gives the first sense of something more dynamic occurring within the band's modus operandi - a feeling that's continued with the finger snapping side "Selfish Jean" (a clear echo of an old b-side) and the strangely upbeat, slightly minatory "Big Chair". The pared down lullabies on The Boy With No Name are good too: songs like "Out In Space," in particular show a more candid, open-minded side of the band. While it's not close to the golden glories of The Man Who or Good Feeling, The Boy With No Name is undoubtedly Travis's most diverse and enjoyable work in a while. -Danny McKenna.

Review The Singles 1992 - 2003 / No Doubt:Though they've suffered death, departure and fraught internal and external relationships, No Doubt have kept faith with fun throughout, as The Singles very clearly proves. As their troubles have made them far from prolific, it's culled almost entirely from three albums-Return of Saturn, Rock Steady and their mega-hit Tragic Kingdom-with just the quirky, warped ska of "Trapped in a Box" to represent their eponymously titled major label debut. As said, it's excellent fun, from the opening power anthem "Just a Girl", through the ultra-modern, Madonna-like "Hey Baby" and the urgent, melodious power pop of "Excuse Me Mr" to the Chicago-style break-up ballad "Don't Speak". It's easy to see how this colourful band of Anaheim skanksters came to be seen as an energising antidote to the crushing male miserabilism of grunge. There are a few extras; a reverent cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life", a dance-metal "Hey Baby" remix and a live repeat of the cute, Leonard Cohen-quoting "Underneath It All", featuring Gwen Stefani's vocal and a simple acoustic guitar. But, naturally, it's the hits that count and they're all here, every bouncing, beaming one of them. It's a fine testament to one of America's most enduring pop acts. -Dominic Wills.

Review Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits / Lenny Kravitz:More prolific than D'Angelo and Terence Trent D'Arby combined, one-man rock & soul revivalist Lenny Kravitz kept traditional pop values alive through much of the 1990s. From the Motown-perfect "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" to the Beatlesque "Let Love Rule", Kravitz has always inhabited his influences with a genuine spirit that transcends imitation. The 15 tracks found on Greatest Hits provide a surprisingly coherent reminder of just how much the artist has accomplished in a relatively short time. And even if "Are You Gonna Go My Way" falls short of its Hendrix target, Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" still rocks in a pleasingly Neanderthal way. An infectious new cut, "Again", fits neatly alongside sturdy Kravitz originals like "Fly Away", "Mr. Cab Driver" and "Black Velveteen", showcasing a talent whose post-modern pop should play well into the new century. -Bill Forman.

Review No More Shall We Part / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds:Eleven studio albums into Nick Cave's career, and it seems that the long wait for his first duff album must continue. No More Shall We Part contains a greater wealth of musical invention and lyrical intelligence in its 68 minutes than most acts manage in an entire career of trying. Cave is not merely in a different league from most of his peers; he's scarcely even playing the same game. No More Shall We Part sees a renewed emphasis on the virtuosity of Cave's long-time backing band, The Bad Seeds-Cave's last album, 1997's superb The Boatman's Call, was a relatively sparse affair. They decorate the sprawling ballads on No More Shall We Part with their usual aplomb, helped on several tracks-notably the gorgeous "Hallelujah"-by the crystalline harmonies of veteran folk singers Kate and Anna McGarrigle. The sound, overall, is best imagined as what Cave and The Bad Seeds were trying to accomplish on Henry's Dream. Cave's lyrical preoccupations have remained more or less constant-God, love and the loss thereof, death (all the greats). As ever, Cave deals with these with greater agility and imagination than anyone else-with the possible exceptions of his obvious eternal idols Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash-and, as ever, is frequently funnier than generally given credit for. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Diva / Annie Lennox:Although traces of her synthpop roots certainly showed through, Annie Lennox's solo debut, Diva, made it abundantly clear that her new material would veer away from gender-bending robotics of the early Eurythmics sound and continue towards the more emotionally grounded soul of later releases. On Diva, Lennox infuses each song with tenderly perceptive lyrics, hypnotic rhythms, and irresistibly soulful wailings. Her arrangements are clean and simple, utilising bare instrumentation and sometimes-languid chord work. The singles "Walking on Broken Glass", "Little Bird", and "Why" became radio mainstays, while gems such as the Eastern-influenced dream ballad "Primitive", the hauntingly autobiographical pop-lament "Legend in My Living Room", and the cheerfully satirical "Keep Young and Beautiful" gave the album a plump maturity. -Sally Weinbach.

Review One By One / Foo Fighters:Every Foo Fighters album, up to and including their fourth studio disc, One By One, fluently merges rock menace with unabashedly cheery melody and thoughtful if somewhat cryptic lyrics. So while insistent, guitar-terrorised tracks like "All My Life" and "Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)" don't expand the Foos' oeuvre, they're as catchy as hell and well worth the proverbial price of admission. Those searching for veiled Nirvana / Courtney Love references will no doubt unearth them (or unearth what seem like veiled references), while longtime fans can relax in the knowledge that a seasoned pro like Grohl knows better than to meddle with a truly winning formula. True, there's a certain sameness to the spiky, percussive bursts of punk-pop tabled by the Foo Fighters. Yet it's pretty hard to fault players as palpably enthusiastic as Dave Grohl and his gang. -Kim Hughes.

Review Forever Delayed: Greatest Hits / Manic Street Preachers:It's been a long, hard career for the Manic Street Preachers, from busking in Cardiff to losing a guitarist (Richey Edwards) and winning awards; but somehow the band survived. Forever Delayed is the long-overdue collection of their best songs, spanning the course of their turbulent career. This was always going to be a weak collection-not because of any shortcomings in their singles material, but because they've always been about something bigger than mere singles. They produced not so much concept albums, but albums of concept, presented as completed works of art. As such, removing any songs from their original context is to immediately weaken them. It shows their career progression clearly-from the dark places of avant-garde The Holy Bible (the Richey album) to the critical and commercial high point of the era-defining Everything Must Go (the without Richey album) and the ensuing struggle with how to proceed musically. The loss of Edwards had an obvious effect, but wasn't immediately indicative of an artistic decline. Only when they tried to revert to their roots did they come unstuck without him (2001's Know Your Enemy). Their commercial and artistic high points rarely combined, but to produce a collection from this period is to do the Manics a great injustice-even if it does have "Motown Junk" on it. -Ben Johncock.

Review The Cost / Frames:You're three tracks into The Cost before you find a song, "The Rise," that opens with anything but singer Glen Hansard's voice as the first thing you hear. The beauty is, you're waiting for the voice, with its hints of Cat Stevens's tonality and its utterly distinct Irish lift. It's Hansard that provides the Frames with such a rising vibe, the sense of a band always lifting off, pressed higher by Colm Mac An Iomaire's violin. Mac An Iomaire's strings slip and slide in the thickets of guitar, playing exceptional cat and mouse both when the guitars are clear and crisp and when they're crashing furiously. The Frames wouldn't claim to write epic tunes, but over and over the songs build toward ecstatic sonic events. Witness the hushed open to "People Get Ready" how it morphs into a violin and guitar-grit blast of wind-blown energy or the distortion-scoured hum behind Hansard's lone voice on "True" launching a languorous, piano-driven backdrop as the singer lets loose a first-class yowl-the stuff of anguished beauty. -Andrew Bartlett.

Review Fisherman's Blues / Waterboys:When The Waterboys' Irish violinist Steve Wickham suggested to Mike Scott that Spiddal was a great place to get away from it all, no-one could have guessed how Scott would take his advice to heart. Within less than a year The Waterboys were transformed from stadium rock incumbents to adopted Irish folk-rockers. Fisherman's Blues is the entrancing outcome of that transition. If the family snapshot on the cover is to be taken at face value, one might imagine this to be an idyllic time in The Waterboys career. In truth, the sessions were painstaking, with Scott discarding over 50 songs over a two-year process. What remains though, is a classic of its time: from the yearning euphoria of the title track to otherworldly beauty of "When Ye Go Away", lent cohesion by the singularity of Scott's vision. For sheer inspiration and flow, precedents begin and end at Van Morrison's Astral Weeks-a doubly appropriate comparison, this, given Scott's superlative reading of Morrison's "Sweet Thing". -Peter Paphides.
