Review Carry On / Chris Cornell:Change has been a constant in Chris Cornell's life since Soundgarden split in 1997. Sober and over 40 now, he lives in France with his wife and daughter. His first solo album (1999's Euphoria Morning) was lauded in the press, but disregarded by the public. And his supergroup Audioslave eventually fizzled after a trio of albums. But on Cornell's long-awaited sophomore solo effort, it's obvious something hasn't been altered: the voice, a distinguished instrument still pure and resonant-and authoritative enough to take on Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and turn it from throbbing dancefloor anthem to portentous ballad. The unforeseen cover is sequenced midway through 14 tracks that have Cornell softening the edges of his music without losing the power of the messenger. No less than a half-dozen songs have hit potential, including "Arms Around Your Love," with its soaring chorus, the R&B-flecked "She'll Never Be Your Man," and "No Such Thing," where restrained verses give way to crunchy-riffed choruses. He uses the bluesy "Safe and Sound" to call for peace, asking "Why can't we pull it together?" Ten years after the breakup of his pioneering band, Chris Cornell has done just that, and it's evident that the change has done him good. -Scott Holter.

Review There Is Nothing Left to Lose / Foo Fighters:Just what is it that you do when the world catches up with you? Dave Grohl's pre-Foo Fighters career was about rebellion and breaking moulds, whether it was in Washington DC hardcore bands (Mission Impossible, Scream) or in Nirvana. When he stepped out from behind the drum kit and put out Foo Fighters, Grohl revealed a nifty knack for a tune and great ear for a guitar riff (and the drumming was still among the best around). He kept it up for the band's second album and the There Is Nothing Left To Lose is firmly in the same vein. That can be a good thing-there are no stinkers here-but after a pair of successful albums that have established him firmly as a talent in his own right, Grohl sometimes feels like he's on autopilot. (And the drumming, for a change, is unremarkable. ) Maybe the album should have been called There's Nothing Left To Prove. -Randy Silver.

Review Goodbye Yellow Brick Road / Elton John:Even those who customarily dismiss Elton John as a somewhat bland and sentimental balladeer would find much to admire in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, the best album he has ever made. The track listing reads like an early Greatest Hits collection; it contains not only the original version of "Candle In The Wind" but such raucous and gleeful songs as "Bennie And The Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n' Roll)". From the impassioned opening medley of "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" to the gentle closer, "Harmony", there are few duff moments among these 17 tracks. "All The Young Girls Love Alice" is a savage but wry tale of lesbian exploitation, and the title song is just short of lovely. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is both a joy for fans and a genuine surprise for the uninitiated. -David Bennun.

Review The Velvet Underground / The Velvet Underground:Released in 1969 to an almost total lack of critical acclaim or consumer interest, the Velvet Underground's third album may well be the finest record of the band's career. Without the sonic terrorism of The Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat or the ill-conceived commercial concessions that marred Loaded, the album's songs are free to stand on their own merit. And stand they do: "What Goes On" and "Beginning to See the Light" may be the finest flat-out rockers in the band's catalogue, while "Pale Blue Eyes", "Jesus", and "Candy Says" are some of the most delicately gorgeous songs Lou Reed has ever penned. There's no evidence here of any of the psychedelic effects and hippie sloganeering that marked most late-1960s rock releases, which is probably why the record still holds up today. -Dan Epstein.

Review Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs / Derek & The Dominos:Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to write and collect an embroiling and interconnected song cycle. Meanwhile, latecomer Duane Allman prodded Clapton to tear it up on guitar, so as not to be overwhelmed by his even more talented foil. Of course, Clapton eventually won the hand of his lady love. And then he divorced her. Sometimes real life messes up a good plot line. -Steve Stolder.

Review Chronicle, Vol. 1: The 20 Greatest Hits / Creedence Clearwater Revival:Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles-most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising. " This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Let Love in / Nick Cave:Ten or so albums into their careers, most artists have subsided into laziness, self-parody or witless second-guessing of the current musical climate. It is entirely in keeping with the wilfulness that has characterised Cave's career that at roughly that point he should start making his very best work. Let Love In is a masterpiece. It sounds both like a summation of everything Cave and his peerless band of virtuosi The Bad Seeds have ever done well-string-laden ballads, gothic blues, brooding gospel-tinged rock & roll-and a cohesive collection in its own right. "Do You Love Me?" might even be the single best thing Cave and The Bad Seeds have ever come up with: he's passionate, literate and funny; they are muscular, sensitive and menacing. -Andrew Mueller.

Review The Best of Bonnie Raitt / Bonnie Raitt:Guitar-slinging blues mama, erudite songwriter and social activist, Bonnie Raitt has become a veritable institution within American music over her three-decade plus career. This overdue Best of
features some of her greatest hits since she signed up with Capitol in 1989. The songs included date back to her seminal and profile-raising (not to mention multi-Grammy winning) album Nick of Time and through definitive moments from the other five albums she has released with the label. Given Raitt's prolific nature and consistently solid output, it must have been a difficult task narrowing this collection down to just 18 songs, but ultimately it seems to flow well, illustrating that despite her increasingly mainstream status and sound, she has still written some kick-ass blues and rock & roll alongside the sugary ballads and saccharine pop hits. From the doo-wop flavour of "Something to Talk About", through torch songs ("I Can't Make You Love Me", "You", "Lover's Will"), raw blues numbers ("Love Sneaking Up on You", "Love Me Like a Man") and some booty-shaking rock & roll ("Rock Steady", "I Believe I'm in Love with You") this is a passionate and sensitive album, and a must for all Raitt fans. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Making Movies / Dire Straits:This is the only Dire Straits album not to feature a rhythm guitarist; instead, an added dimension is given to the sound by the addition of Roy Bittan, Bruce Springsteen's pianist. In fact, there were several Springsteen connections to this album: Jimmy Iovine, the producer, was the engineer on Born To Run and the famous riff of "Romeo And Juliet" is a slowed-down version of the piano intro to that album's "Jungleland". A more general connection is the torrent of imagery centred around the romance of the city, most notably on "Skateaway", but also present in the perfectly-rendered teenage angst of hit single "Romeo and Juliet", and the celebratory tale of tawdriness and passion that is "Tunnel Of Love". Mark Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers were fresh from the honour of recording an album with Bob Dylan after he had seen and been impressed by the band playing in LA earlier in the year; but sadly this was to be Withers' last album with Dire Straits, as he left for a career in jazz shortly after. A fine album, the most truly outstanding song is the devastating lovers' lament of "Hand In Hand". Unfortunately it closes on a low note with "Les Boys", Knopfler's faintly embarrassing and uninventive song about the gay scene in Berlin. -James Swift.
