Review You Keep Me Hangin' On / Diana Ross & The Supremes:The title is a bit of a misnomer: The Supremes are anthologised in more comprehensive fashion on Motown's three-volume Greatest Hits series, while this package is denser, and has a higher hit-per-track ratio. But if you'd rather pick up one collection than three, and if you want a good, thorough skimming of cream from the group's catalogue, this is the better choice. All of the familiar songs are here, with no major omissions-and they're packed in with a liberal helping of second-magnitude hits. For a collection that samples only the extreme top end of the Supremes' output, there's Every Great No. 1 Hit, also on Motown. It's missing a lot, but it delivers exactly what it promises. -Gavin McNett.

Review Always and Forever / Eternal:The debut album from this female South London quartet, as was, is most notable for containing the thumping, inspirational "Just A Step From Heaven", a genuine R&B classic and powerful both as a love song and an implicit political statement. It was the song which announced Eternal as a musical force to be reckoned with, and despite the high standard of the their subsequent work, it remains their finest five minutes. The rest of Always And Forever sounds closer to the band's later successes: tight uptempo booty-shakers ("Stay", "Crazy") alternated with smoothly produced, mawkish ballads ("Oh Baby I. ", "Don't Say Goodbye"). It all makes for pleasant listening, but suffers by comparison to that one extraordinary moment. -David Bennun.

Review Funky Divas / En Vogue:If En Vogue looked like one-hit wonders after "Hold On", Funky Divas, their second album, confounded these expectations, and established them as serious contenders. Arguably the first "swing" band to achieve real success in the UK, they have paved the way for future all girl, black groups such as Jade, SWV, 702 and so on. However, this album, produced and arranged as always by Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster (also responsible for Club Noveau's classic "Lean On Me", as covered in 1999 by 4 The Cause), is too varied to fit totally into the "swing" pigeonhole, including as it does the faux-Parliament heavy riffing of equality anthem "Free Your Mind". One of the best things about En Vogue is the sassy talking interludes between tracks, and this album is no exception. It also includes singles "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Give It Up Turn It Loose", and, most notably, the truly marvellous "Never Gonna Get It". -Ronita Dutta.

Review Luther Vandross / Luther Vandross:Having the vocal skills to be able to sing the phonebook doesn't necessarily mean that one should. Over the course of his last few albums, singer extraordinaire Luther Vandross has been saddled with material not nearly as magnificent as his silken, impeccably romantic voice. Luckily for fans of Luther, and for anyone who hungers for grown up polished R&B/pop, the king of the love song is back. Though nowhere near his early classics, this eponymous release is definitely his best since 1991's "Power of Love". From aching ballads to up tempo finger poppers, Luther lets the magic of his supple voice weave a spell. Even if his chart-topping days are behind him, Vandross' ability to croon is firmly in effect. Review I Care 4 U / Aaliyah:Serving as both a greatest hits collection and a summary of stuff she'd been working on before her August 2001 death, I Care 4 U is a keen reminder of just how talented the 22-year-old Aaliyah was as a singer and song stylist. Sure, it's easy to have rhythm aplenty when R Kelly and Timbaland are guiding you, but Aaliyah's silken phrasings are her own, and her ability to unearth tenderness in even the most funky jam is a testament to her vision of R&B as musical comfort food. Songs from her three studio albums are well represented. Among them are "I Care 4 U" and "More than a Woman" from Aaliyah, the title track and "Got to Give it Up" from One in a Million; and "Back and Forth" and "At Your Best" from Age Ain't Nothing but a Number.
