Review #1's [MINIDISC] / Mariah Carey:Mariah Carey's #1's is as much a time capsule of 1990s pop and R&B as a record of one woman's chart toppers: the disc chronicles a shift from the sweet, nearly '50s-style "Vision of Love" to more recent hip-hop-lite grooves featuring heavy input from Puffy Combs ("Honey"), Jermaine Dupri ("Sweetheart"), and O. D. B. ("Fantasy"). Some hit, some miss, but all feature the fluttery swoops that Carey substitutes for expression of feeling. Depth is beside the point, but few of these tracks are even fun. Still, after eight years, there seems to be no stopping her, and this album will hardly break her streak of successes. -Rickey Wright.

Review The Ultimate Collection [CASSETTE] / Diana Ross & Supremes:The title is a bit of a misnomer: The Supremes are anthologised in more comprehensive fashion on Motown's 40 Golden Motown Greats, while this package is denser, and has a higher hit-per-track ratio. But if you'd rather not spend the extra money, and if you want a good, thorough skimming of cream from the group's catalogue, this is the better choice. All of the familiar songs are here, with no major omissions-and they're packed in with a liberal helping of second-magnitude hits. -Gavin McNett.

Review My Secret Passion [CASSETTE] / Michael Bolton:Of course Michael Bolton-the world's greatest mimic-should not be allowed within 200 yards of an opera house, what with his bluesy rasp instead of the round, pure sound associated with opera. But he's no fool, and he has studied the languages (Italian and French), the idiom, and the texts of all of these well-known, oft-recorded arias. He claims to love this music and I, for one, believe him. He hits all the notes-occasionally too hard and invariably with the wrong gloves-but he nails them all-including a very weird high C at the end of the Act One Boheme duet with Renee Fleming (of all people). What's more (and better) is his emotional involvement in each aria-he sings off the words in a way that makes Bocelli, the other crossover pop star du jour-look like an imposter with a pretty voice, which is what he is. To wrap up: This is a valiant try that can never, because of the equipment, be successful on operatic terms, but as an artistic endeavor-even one that ultimately fails-this is to be praised. -Robert Levine.
