Review Blood on the Dance Floor: History in the Mix [VINYL] / Michael Jackson:

Containing eight remixed tracks from Jackson's 1995 HIStory, as well as five new compositions, Blood On The Dancefloor tastefully mixes old sounds with new. The new songs which open the album are led by the thrash-pop title track, which is reminiscent of many of the creations on Dangerous. "Morphine" is a dark and emotive track, while "Ghosts" and "Is It Scary" are autobiographical accounts of fatherhood and the problems of privacy which followed the birth of his baby. The disco remix of "Stranger In Moscow", meanwhile, is an excellent up-tempo remodelling of the original track. -John Galilee.

Review What's Going On [CASSETTE] / Marvin Gaye:

Sly & The Family Stone might have psychedelicised soul music, but Marvin Gaye personalised it. Although the powers-that-were Motown didn't even want to release the record, the unexpected success of What's Going On, issued in 1971, inspired Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and just about every other black artist on the planet to take greater responsibility for their music and its meaning. Gaye co-wrote the songs and produced the album, flavouring it with layer upon layer of his own multi-tracked vocals, oceans of hand percussion, strings, flutes and jazzy horn solos. Spacy and loose as a spliff-fuelled Sunday afternoon jam in the park, the nine songs all played like hit singles. The title track- inspired by his brother's return from the Vietnam War-and the obvious social commentary of "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" and "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" actually were hit singles. Two other tracks ("Wholly Holy" and "Save the Children") would inspire hit covers by Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, respectively. Nevertheless, What's Going On sounds as fresh today as it did the week that it came out. -Don Waller.

Review Fulfillingness' First Finale [CASSETTE] / Stevie Wonder:

Stevie Wonder was in the middle of a multi-album roll when he put out this funk and soul collection, clunky title and all, in 1974. As usual, he adds depth and unexpected touches to even the most straightforward love song-the moving piano ballad "Too Shy to Say" has a spooky feeling, as if "I want to fly away with you, until there's nothing more to do" is the saddest line he ever sang. The harder songs, such as the fuzzy funk of "Boogie On Reggae Woman" and the angry "doo-de-wop" attack on then-US President Richard Nixon in "You Haven't Done Nothin'", add urgency without sacrificing the album's cohesiveness. -Steve Knopper.

Review Ooooooohhh...On the TLC Tip [CASSETTE] / TLC:

A hip-hop album with major pop crossover appeal, TLC's 1992 debut was an instant success. The trio of young women-T-Boz, Chilli, and Left Eye-projected a playful and colorful image, wearing bright, floppy clothes and using prophylactics as fashion accessories (Left Eye used to wear a colored condom as an eye patch, hence the nickname). The music was equally vibrant, trading off Left Eye's sandy raps, T-Boz's low-register come-hither croon, and Chilli's sultry R&B vocal melodies, creating an infectious, high-energy buzz. With singles like "Baby-Baby-Baby," "What About Your Friends," and the party-anthem shout-out "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg," the group approached subjects like sex and friendship with a youthful, inexplicit innocence. -Beth Bessmer.

Review Funky Divas [MINIDISC] / En Vogue:

If En Vogue looked like one-hit wonders after "Hold On", Funky Divas, their second album, confounded these expectations, and established them as serious contenders. Arguably the first "swing" band to achieve real success in the UK, they have paved the way for future all girl, black groups such as Jade, SWV, 702 and so on. However, this album, produced and arranged as always by Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster (also responsible for Club Noveau's classic "Lean On Me", as covered in 1999 by 4 The Cause), is too varied to fit totally into the "swing" pigeonhole, including as it does the faux-Parliament heavy riffing of equality anthem "Free Your Mind". One of the best things about En Vogue is the sassy talking interludes between tracks, and this album is no exception. It also includes singles "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Give It Up Turn It Loose", and, most notably, the truly marvellous "Never Gonna Get It". -Ronita Dutta.

Review Innervisions [CASSETTE] / Stevie Wonder:

One of Stevie Wonder's best albums, and the one where his more fanciful, free-form moments gel perfectly with his knack for irresistible pop singles, 1973's Innervisions swings between delicate and airy ballads, Latin-influenced rhythms (the hit "Don't Worry 'Bout A Thing"), and his own synth-heavy versions of gut-bucket soul (the determined spiritual questing of "Higher Ground"). The striking juxtaposition between "Vision", a barely breathed hope that a world of peace might be upon us, and the great "Living For The City", a funky, pulsing tale of racism is powerful, haunting and still all too relevant. -David Cantwell.
