Review Innervisions / Stevie Wonder:One of Stevie Wonder's best albums, and the one where his more fanciful, free-form moments gel perfectly with his knack for irresistible pop singles, 1973's Innervisions swings between delicate and airy ballads, Latin-influenced rhythms (the hit "Don't Worry 'Bout A Thing"), and his own synth-heavy versions of gut-bucket soul (the determined spiritual questing of "Higher Ground"). Review Midnight Love/the Sexual Healing Sessions / Marvin Gaye:This set's first disc is a sparkling upgrade of Gaye's final album. Hardly as frivolous as the artist claimed in the David Ritz-penned biography Divided Soul, 1982's Midnight Love finds an assured-sounding Gaye melding with smooth, rhythmically dense tracks; the thoughtful smash "Sexual Healing" is hardly the only masterwork here. "Third World Girl" nods toward Bob Marley, "Joy" perfectly captures Gaye's trademark urgency and "Turn On Some Music" is a sex song worthy of "Let's Get It On". The second CD's archaeology sometimes gets tiring (anyone for an "alternate 12-inch instrumental" of "Sexual Healing"?) but turns up the occasional winner (the a cappella version of that song). A must for soul students and those who just want to seduce-or be seduced. -Rickey Wright.

Review I Know / Luther Vandross:Friendship, love, nostalgia, and truth are the fertile lyrical ingredients that colour the melodic canvas of Vandross's 13th album. A master of R&B vocal phrasing, jazzy composition, and pop string arrangements, Vandross remains on point with standout tunes such as "Keeping My Faith in You", "Are You Using Me?" and "Religion". However, the veteran singer also explores fresh creative paths on which to deliver his rich, trademark vocals. He raises the stakes by going uncharacteristically up-tempo with the inventive "Nights in Harlem", where he recalls festive sentimental memories. Review The Writing's on the Wall / Destiny's Child:This silky-voiced Texan foursome combine hints of the slow, laconic sweetness of R&B mistress Erykah Badu with the tough, edgy pop of TLC. Like other US R&B girl groups, their follow-up to 1998's self-titled debut comes with the suitable glossy sheen and hot, late 90s producer-in this case She'kspere, the dude behind TLC's summer of 99 hit "No Scrubs". His magical, minimalist touch makes tracks like "Bills Bills Bills" and "Bug A Boo" memorable for their insouciance, and deft, hardcore harmonies. Writer/producer Missy Elliot also puts in her several thousand dollars-worth on "Confessing", a low-key love groove. Though teenagers when they recorded this album, Destiny's Child sing convincingly of faithless lovers, e-mail stalkers, and extra-marital temptation, complete with cod-Shakespearean quotes. They also do a gospel version of "Amazing Grace", letting their voices buck and weave a cappella. Apart from a few less than enthralling ballads, it¹s an engaging, sassy mix. -Lucy O'Brien.

Review Any Love / Luther Vandross:Not his best record-then again, none of them are, though every single one ought to be. Vandross was the first one to come down with Whitney's Syndrome, meaning he's got the chops, but not the taste. Not that he's got the chops to be Al Green (or, for that matter, Barry White), but Vandross on this disc is more frustrating than exhilarating. The man's got it in him, and sometimes, you wonder if he'll ever find it. -Robert Wilonsky.
