Review Fats and His Buddies 1927-1929 / Fats Waller:When he died in 1943, Harlem-born Thomas "Fats" Waller had taken all he'd learned from his mentor, the ragtime-stride pianist James P. Johnson, and established a reputation as an instrumentalist/songwriter/performer that dwarfed Johnson's, casting a long shadow over subsequent keyboard giants, including Erroll Garner, Count Basie, and Art Tatum. Though Waller's first recordings brought stride piano into the musical mainstream, they barely hinted at the greatness looming ahead. Waller's ascendancy began in 1927. Over the next two years, well documented here, he worked with small combos populated by many of the preeminent instrumentalists of the day, laying the foundation for the towering artistry he would deliver in the 1930s with the group dubbed Fats Waller and His Rhythm. Even the lesser moments here-primarily four songs recorded with the Louisiana Sugar Babes (featuring James P. Johnson on piano, with Waller on the pipe organ)-feature fascinating if cautious interplay and solos by cornetist Jabbo Smith and multi-instrumentalist Garvin Bushell. The cream of the cuts are those credited to Fats Waller and His Buddies, dating from March 1929, with Waller joined by the likes of Gene Krupa, Jack Teagarden, Pops Foster, and trombonist Charlie Irvis, who later would play a pivotal role in the development of Duke Ellington's "jungle style. " Although deferential to his inspired accompanists, Waller's engaging, witty solos point the way to the outsized personality that blossomed in his music over the next decade. -David McGee.

Review 1936 / Fats Waller:Of the four complete band sessions on Fats Waller 1936 the second is rewardingly unusual in featuring only Waller compositions and no singing. The six tracks from this date do have typical vocal comments and asides from the leader and the second, entitled "Bach Up To Me", produces this easily answered Waller query: "I wonder if Bach could swing like this?" In general however these pieces give more space than usual to the propulsive tenor or spirited clarinet of Gene Sedric, the chorded guitar solos of Al Casey and the incisive trumpet of Herman Autrey. And Waller's piano of course takes its own significant place in each sequence of solos. The other 17 tracks are more typical, with Waller singing songs which are not, apart from "Crazy 'Bout My Baby", his own compositions. "It's a Sin To Tell a Lie" is the best known but all of them, whatever their quality when they came off the Tin Pan Alley production line, they are transmuted by the vivacious Fats into a blend of high-class entertainment and cheerful artistry. -Graham Colombé.

Review Snowy Morning Blues / James P. Johnson:This collection of James P. Johnson's Decca recordings is an excellent introduction to the pianist's art, including early and later recordings, some of his own best-known pieces, and well-known pieces by others. Four piano solos from 1930 include an animated rendition of Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love?" and his own "You've Got to Be Modernistic," while the bulk of the material comes from 1944 recordings. For the first eight of these, Johnson is accompanied by drummer Eddy Dougherty in a series of pieces associated with his recently deceased friend Fats Waller. It's an affecting tribute, tempering Waller's exuberance with Johnson's more reflective approach, and it includes both Waller's own compositions, like "Ain't Misbehavin' " and "Honeysuckle Rose," and songs strongly associated with him, like his biggest hit, "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter. " The later solo recordings of some of Johnson's earlier and best-known pieces, including "Snowy Morning Blues" and "Carolina Shout," couple his enduring playing ability with significantly improved recording technology. -Stuart Broomer.

Review A Study in Frustration/Thesaurus of Classic Jazz [CASSETTE] / Fletcher Henderson:Pianist, arranger, and bandleader, Fletcher Henderson led the greatest and most important of the pioneering big bands, and A Study In Frustration illustrates his career perfectly. Although he boasted such extraordinary sidemen as Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Buster Bailey, Rex Stewart, Ben Webster, Chu Berry, Benny Carter, Buster Bailey, Roy Eldridge, and Red Allen, the band's legend and contributions have been eclipsed in the public's consciousness by the great bands of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Benny Goodman, for whom Henderson eventually worked as an arranger. Formed in 1924 as a dance band, the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra only evolved as a jazz group with the addition of Louis Armstrong as a featured soloist in 1925-6. But the musicians who followed in his footsteps made the group a feature for some of the music's most exciting soloists, and the arrangements of orchestrator Don Redman helped define the standard forms for big band jazz-forms that Henderson and his brother, Horace, helped extend with their subsequent superb charts. Indeed, such comparatively late Henderson recordings as "Christopher Columbus," "Stealin' Apples," and "Queer Notions" are among some of jazz's greatest if least celebrated works. -Fred Goodman.
