Review I'm Gonna Sit Right Down: The Early Years, Part 2 / Fats Waller & His Rhythm:

The 45 tracks on these two CDs come from a nine-month period that saw Fats Waller reaching the height of his popularity, emphasizing his talents as a singer of light popular songs. While many of the tunes heard here haven't endured, Waller's treatment of them certainly does. They bubble with infectious good humor, a matchless charm, a superb sense of swing, and a breadth of spirit that put Waller on the same plateau as Louis Armstrong among jazz entertainers. He could convey both bemusement and joy, making it clear it was possible to be happy in more ways than one at the same time. Waller was a great jazz pianist even when he was playing decorative fills or a chorus. His piano and occasional celesta shine here, as do the members of his regular band, especially Herman Autrey on trumpet and Rudy Powell (and, later, Gene Sedric) on clarinet and tenor, complementing Waller perfectly and expanding on the good spirits. On four tracks, the Rhythm expand from their usual five pieces to a big band, including a version of "I've Got Rhythm" with brilliant stride piano and high-note trumpet work. -Stuart Broomer.

Review Tour de Force / Earl Hines:

Like many artists, Hines' career had its peaks and troughs. During the 1930s he lead a successful big band for years, many of them spent at Chicago's Grand Terrace. In the 40s his band became an incubator for bebop stars such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughan. After working with Louis Arsmtrong's All Stars during the 50s he moved to the West Coast and disappeared from the headlines, although he still worked regularly in clubs around the area. Stanley Dance convinced him that there was still an audience for his unique and dazzling piano style and brought Hines to New York for a concert in 1964. After that Hines career took off, with international tours and many record sessions keeping him busy until his death in 1983. It was Dance who supervised this 1972 recording, a solo set of such depth, impact and richness that Tour de Force seems the only suitable title. Hines had large hands which gave him the ability to play tenths. More important, he knew how to use these gifts to the maximum effect. He had long ago perfected an "orchestral" style of solo playing in which full, spread chords were interspersed with glittering cascades of notes, sometimes with both hands in the treble half of the keyboard to increase the impact. [+]
The nine tunes presented here contain wonderfully expanded versions of songs such as "Mack The Knife", "Lonesome Road" and "Say It Isn't So". -Steve Voce.
