Review Fatha 1932-42 / Earl 'Fatha' Hines:Such is Hines' reputation as a virtuoso performer and a pioneer of jazz piano that his talents as a bandleader have been rather overlooked. He was, in fact, an exceptional leader and his bands were all distinguished by their cohesion and drive. He was also a great spotter of talent, having recruited into his various orchestras a remarkable number of young people who later became great jazz stars themselves, such as Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstine. These tracks from the 1930s are full of zest and swing, from the classic "Rosetta" of 1932 to his own favourites, "The Earl" and "Second Balcony Jump", made 10 years later. By way of light relief, the trio version of "Blues In Thirds", with Sidney Bechet and Baby Dodds, has also been included. Hines' own piano playing tends to dominate his bands, far more than Basie, Ellington and other pianist-leaders dominate theirs. But he had so much to say through the medium of the piano, and he said it so eloquently, that this is only to be expected. -Dave Gelly.
