And so the mighty Now That's What I Call Music juggernaut rolls on, crushing all competition in its wake (anyone remember its erstwhile competitor "Hits" which petered out after about five volumes?). Now 45 conforms perfectly to the formula that has made this series such a success, packing in hit after hit of disposable poppy tunes. CD One goes for a mixture of out-and-out pop fare, with S Club 7, Britney Spears, Vengaboys and Aqua, and R&B-lite from the likes of the Honeyz, Precious and Fierce. CD Two goes off on more of a dance tip, with chart-topping-tastic "choons" from the likes of Chicane, Moloko, Basement Jaxx and the omnipresent Moby. CD Two then goes a bit weird at the end with Blink 182 and John Lennon-two tracks that the compilers were obviously keen to include but didn't seem to quite know where to put them. Apart from that it's easy-on-the-ear, high-on-the-saccharine from start to finish. If this is what you call music, then you'll love it. -Helen Marquis.

1999 was an eventful year for music, and Now! 44 reflects this with a double-CD collection of some of the year's biggest hits. As is expected from the Now That's What I Call Music! series, none of the chart-toppers are left unrepresented: there's Robbie Williams ("She's The One"), Britney Spears ("Baby One More Time"), Shania Twain ("That Don't Impress Me Much") and Steps ("Tragedy"), to name a just few. In addition to the expected list of pop stars, the UK chart's diversity is demonstrated by the inclusion of a number of different styles, from dance (Moloko, ATB, etc) to indie (Supergrass, Bran Van 3000) to reggae (Bob Marley), and all points in between. Well if you thought the last one was a tough act to follow then check out the track listing for Now That's What I Call Music 51. As ever there's a bit of everything so as not to get too bogged down in the whole teen-pop aesthetic, making it more a collection of popular songs from the "hit parade" rather than a tribute to Britney, the Club et all. So, in no particular order, there's classic rock from the Stereophonics and Nickelback, feisty rock from Sum 41 and Alien Ant Farm which is preceded by a conveniently placed twilight pasture at the end of disc one with Geri and Vicki lumped with the Allstars (a Bucks Fizz cover?!?) and Hear'say (they won 2001's Popstars show). But thankfully the rest is non-stop popular music excitement with number ones from Enrique Iglesias ("Hero"), Daniel Bedingfield ("Gotta Get Thru This"), Aaliyah ("More Than A Woman"), Robbie & Nicole ("Something Stupid") and S Club 7 ("Have You Ever"). Dancey highlights include DB Boulevard, Lasgo and the Chemical Brothers with R&B from queen Mary J Blige and a smidgen of hip-hop crossover from Ja Rule with Ashanti but with far too many "choons" to mention, the best thing would be to have a peek and see for yourself. -Georgina Collins.
