Review The Best of George Harrison / George Harrison:

As the Beatles' perpetual dark horse, Harrison rarely got the chance to write and sing more than one or two songs per album. But once the band split up, the former "quiet one" was quick out of the gate with a series of memorable hit singles that seamlessly merged his budding spirituality and an epic, Phil Spector-inspired pop sensibility. This collection, originally released in 1976, combines seven of Harrison's best-known Beatles numbers, including "Something", "If I Needed Someone", "Here Comes the Sun", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with a half-dozen early solo hits including "My Sweet Lord", "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)", "You" and "What Is Life". As such, it's a good entry-level Harrison primer. -Scott Schinder.

Review The Best of Van Morrison / Van Morrison:

Van Morrison reputedly wasn't crazy about the idea of a greatest-hits package, and this set's haphazard programming-which leaps from period to period, style to style, tossing in two key singles by his mid-1960s band Them-speaks of his lack of involvement. Still, it rivals Moondance as Morrison's most popular album, and for a reason: like that classic, it offers one deeply soulful, spiritually and musically thoughtful track after another. Much of his more "difficult" work is ignored here; in fact, Best of. gives us an intriguing picture of a Van who's almost eager to please. -Rickey Wright.

Review Wings Greatest / Paul McCartney:

Paul McCartney's primary creative drive was always his own ego-once he'd got the Beatles out of his system, he was left with a vast talent and little motivation. In a sense, Wings could never really be more than a conceit, something to do on Sundays. But it's that pure indulgence, married to McCartney's unshakeable populist instincts, that makes Wings so unique, and enjoyable. Wings Greatest is a selective hits compilation (unsurprisingly omitting "Give Ireland Back To The Irish") that proves the point-this stuff is weird. "Hi Hi Hi" is a frenzied, explicit ode to sex on drugs, "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" a shameless celebration of inactivity swimming in off-key backing vocals. In the woozy, repetitious "Let 'Em In", McCartney details early arrivals at a party he's giving: his own family, Martin Luther and the Everly Brothers. And amongst the drugged whimsy sit some real gems, moments when some thought or word nudged Macca back to a best that was no longer strictly necessary: "Jet", "My Love", "Band On The Run". Wings Greatest is often lazy, and doubtlessly counter-revolutionary, but still pretty impressive. -Taylor Parkes.

Review Greatest Hits : Shining Like A National Guitar / Paul Simon:

Nothing he has released since has matched the sales heights of Bridge Over Troubled Water, but the quality of Paul Simon's solo work is undeniable-indeed it could be argued that the songwriter's work post-Simon & Garfunkel has been even more rewarding aesthetically. Shining Like A National Guitar-the fourth compilation to be drawn from Simon's eight solo albums-offers another welcome opportunity to appreciate this extraordinary career arc: tracing Simon's fascinating musical odyssey from Jamaica's "Mother & Child Reunion" and South Africa's "Boy In The Bubble", to Latin America's "The Obvious Child". Along the way, marvel at the articulate precision of Simon's music-"Graceland", "Hearts & Bones", "Still Crazy After All These Years", right up to the recent undervalued album of Capeman. He may not have been particularly prolific, but it's possible to be dazzled afresh by the sheer brilliance of Paul Simon's music. -Patrick Humphries.

Review Venus And Mars / Paul McCartney:

Released in the glow of Wings' biggest and best album, Band On The Run, Venus & Mars found Paul McCartney in his element-a working rock star, being screamed at again, cheerfully riding the last rays of his youth. Adulation always brought the best out of him, and Venus & Mars is nearly the equal of its more lauded predecessor. McCartney never strays from his favourite themes (sex, drugs, rock & roll and marriage), but his confidence is audibly high, mixing gorgeous, airy production numbers such as "Listen To What The Man Said" and "Letting Go" with the ribald and hilarious. "Rock Show" matches The Who's "Long Live Rock" as the finest and funniest of those self-celebratory Seventies stomps. McCartney's effortless marshalling of melody and arrangement hoists the blander material out of trouble, and the best stuff's powered by genuine, rediscovered verve. Facile and frivolous, but not at all bad. And their version of the "Crossroads" theme tune is wicked. -Taylor Parkes.

Review A New Day at Midnight / David Gray:

David Gray's A New Day at Midnight is darker than its mega-hit predecessor, and deeper, and all the better for that. Emotionally fuelled by the death of Gray's father and the birth of his son, it possesses much the same tone as White Ladder, being simultaneously celebratory and troubled. The album, though, is slow starting. "Caroline", with its rattling percussion and quasi-Celtic pedal steel excursions is a bit messy, while "Long Distance Call", mixing an orchestra with electronic effects, is an interesting collage but not much of a song. Both give the impression that Gray's trying to appear more cutting-edge than he actually is. It's with "Freedom", when that big piano deepens and the pain enters his voice, that he really gets going. This leads to the excellent "Kangaroo" and "Last Boat to America", both yearning and teeming with striking lyrical images. Then it really takes off, with the Stones-y rock groove of "Real Love" and the gospel feel of "Knowhere", leading to the quite brilliant unrequited love song "Be Mine" and crushing closer "The Other Side". -Dominic Wills.

Review Love Songs / Elton John:

Whether he's collaborating with longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin or other songwriters (such as his Lion King partner, Tim Rice) Elton John has written and performed some of the most cherished love songs in the pop-music canon. This career-spanning retrospective spotlights that particular aspect of his artistry, focusing on classics such as "Your Song", "Believe", "The One", "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word", and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". The album takes a rather expansive view of the concept-there are also tracks here such as "Daniel", which is less a love song than a tribute to a wounded war veteran, and a live take of "Candle in the Wind", which, kiddies, was once a song about Marilyn Monroe, not Princess Diana. John's Lion King triumphs-"Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life"-are included, as are a pair of new tracks, "You Can Make History (Young Again)" and "No Valentines". The album may stray from the topic a bit, but there's little doubt that these songs are among his most essential. -Daniel Durchholz.

Review Blood Money / Tom Waits:

Based on director Robert Wilson's horrific tale of a 19th century Prussian soldier subjected to medical experiments after being driven insane by his cheating woman, Tom Waits' Blood Money is-contrarily-the funniest Waits album since his late 1970s drunken cabaret period. The musical landscape is painted by alternately stomping or swaying jazz rhythms and melodies, pizzicato strings, sexy mutant Latin guitars, wailing harmonicas, lyrical clarinets and drunken brass, while Waits utilises every voice-from poisoned croon to martial rant-that he's ever stumbled upon, as his metaphors and killing jokes turn horror into bleak hilarity. Ignore those who say that Blood Money is the evil, inaccessible twin of the concurrently-released Alice-they perhaps don't appreciate the desire for redemption and the love of humanity that lies behind the ironies of all great black comedy. Blood Money is a new musical and poetic peak, and the greatest Tom Waits album yet. -Garry Mulholland.

Review Greatest Hits Vol.1: History / Michael Jackson:

Michael Jackson's Greatest Hits Vol 1 is in fact the first disc from his previous greatest-hits collection, HIStory: Past Present & Future, which was half compilation, half new material. Despite missing a few okay songs that were included on the latter half of HIStory, none of the newer songs came anywhere near the magic of Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad or (to a lesser extent) Dangerous from which this album is made up. Starting off with the legendary groove of "Billie Jean", Michael shows exactly how he earned his reputation as the "King of Pop" for there are no album fillers on this 15-track CD. What's more, there are so many not included, as there simply isn't room to condense his very best work onto one single album. Guests include Sir Paul McCartney ("The Girl is Mine"), rock hero Eddie Van Halen ("Beat It") and top producers Quincy Jones and Teddy Riley-great songs, great performers, great moments in pop history when Michael Jackson truly was Invincible. -David Trueman.
