Review From the Cradle / Eric Clapton:The full-tilt blues album that Clapton had been promising for years, From the Cradle proves the guitarist's enduring devotion to a form he had long relegated to merely a flavour in his music rather than the main ingredient. Clapton's singing on the album is somewhat mannered; he tries to compete with original versions of these songs by Muddy Waters, Charles Brown, and others, and there's no way he's going to win that battle. Still, you can feel the emotional connection Clapton has with these songs, and guitar aficionados will swoon over his fretwork on songs such as "Third Degree", "Someday After a While", and the incendiary "Groanin' the Blues". -Daniel Durchholz.

Review The Dream Of The Blue Turtles / Sting:From one spin of The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Sting's first solo release, it's obvious that for him there would be life beyond the Police. Teamed with a band of top jazz players, he presents his musical visions that had gone unrealised while he was still constrained by his former ensemble. In style and subject matter, it's a decidedly diverse collection of songs and the playing is excellent throughout. The love songs are mostly focused on endings or escapes, and it's quite possible to interpret much of the imagery in reference to the bitter break-up of the Police. Sting's concern with history and politics is in evidence: he makes a father's plea for sanity and restraint in the nuclear age, takes up for the UK's much-abused coal miners, and relates the savage stupidity of World War I to the destructive effects of adolescent heroin addiction. Songs that seem elaborately constructed and recorded contrast with others that are presented as one-take jams. Seen as a whole, The Dream of the Blue Turtles is eclectic, ambitious-sometimes pretentious-but altogether worth owning. -Al Massa.

Review Affirmation / Savage Garden:Following the successful formula of their eponymous debut album, Savage Garden's Affirmation is made up of classic pop melodies and sleepy ballads. The title track cracks open the album-a song that sees Hayes philosophising about the inequalities of the world from a liberal minded perspective (and in true Alanis Morissette "Ironic" fashion). Although it leaves the boys open to claims of pretentiousness, the song is a high-powered introduction to an album which somehow manages to alternate between safe and risky. For example, "The Animal Song" is a menagerie of popular music sounds, which manages to be challenging while remaining comfortably familiar. Affirmation is an album that affirms why Savage Garden are one of the world's most important pop duos. -John Galilee.

Review Dangerous: Remastered / Michael Jackson:Michael Jackson was still going for pop hits with 1991's Dangerous, but he also front-loaded the album with six straight Teddy Riley-assisted cuts. This half-hour swoop of tense, aggressive, often angular funk was Jackson's most interesting music since Thriller, and still sounds, well, invincible on this remastered edition. After that, the record's uneven, but there's nothing embarrassing about it, either. "Gone Too Soon", a non-Jackson composition about teen AIDS casualty Ryan White, is a quiet statement (particularly played next to the choir-laden "Heal the World", "Keep the Faith", and "Will You Be There") showing that the star doesn't always have to get showy. The sprightly "Black or White" is explicitly pro-interracial romance, an angle its video didn't go near, and the urgent "Give In to Me" is almost scary. Scary good, that is. -Rickey Wright.

Review Wingspan: Hits and History / Paul McCartney & Wings:Wingspan could be the collection that finally gives Wings the respect that they've long been due. Some people are wary of Wings simply because knocking them is the done thing. Others are dubious because they've actually tried listening to London Town or Red Rose Speedway all the way through. It's a truism that without a vociferous writing partner, Paul McCartney's sense of quality control could be rather lax, but it's easy to overlook how many fine tracks he and Wings produced from 1970 to 1983, the period covered on Wingspan. Compiling 40 of them on a two-CD set is a smart move-it allows you to purchase pretty much every post-Beatles McCartney song you could ever possibly want, all at once. The hits crowd together on the first disc, while the second cherry-picks album tracks and oddities; forget the inevitable "Mull of Kintyre", let "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Waterfalls" and "Back Seat of My Car" remind you of just what Paul McCartney could always do when he tried. -Taylor Parkes.

Review Band On The Run / Paul McCartney:If Paul McCartney will be remembered for anything post- Beatles, it's Band On the Run. Even though he had to go all over creation to record it, the trip was obviously worthwhile, bringing forth gems like "Helen Wheels", "Jet" and the title track. Everything is in place: the melodies, the pop smarts and a real studio production. Amazingly, Wings actually consisted of Paul and his wife Linda, with guitarist Denny Laine; Paul played almost everything on the record. Regardless, it was his return-finally-to greatness. -Chris Nickson.

Review Songs From The Last Century / George Michael:On Songs From The Last Century, George Michael seems determined to demonstrate just how much he's matured since the carefree days of Wham!; by offering his own interpretations of some of the century's classic songs, he manages to shake off any lingering remnants of his boyband past. Michael has one of the most versatile and beautiful voices ever recorded-a voice more suited for jazz or soul than pop-a fact that his own records have often only glossed over. Much better, therefore, to have him cover songs made famous by the likes of Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Brother Can You Spare A Dime", "Where Or When" and other standards are all performed to stunning effect, lushly backed by an orchestra that's as restrained and powerful as Michael's voice. He also manages to toss some surprisingly inspired choices into the mix: on "Roxanne", he wisely realises that no one can sing like Sting and opts for a more delicate approach, while his version of "Miss Sarajevo" (from the U2/ Brian Eno collaboration Passengers) elevates this obscure track to the classic status of the other standards. -Robert Burrow.

Review Greatest Hits Vol.1: History / Michael Jackson:Michael Jackson's Greatest Hits Vol 1 is in fact the first disc from his previous greatest-hits collection, HIStory: Past Present & Future, which was half compilation, half new material. Despite missing a few okay songs that were included on the latter half of HIStory, none of the newer songs came anywhere near the magic of Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad or (to a lesser extent) Dangerous from which this album is made up. Starting off with the legendary groove of "Billie Jean", Michael shows exactly how he earned his reputation as the "King of Pop" for there are no album fillers on this 15-track CD. What's more, there are so many not included, as there simply isn't room to condense his very best work onto one single album. Guests include Sir Paul McCartney ("The Girl is Mine"), rock hero Eddie Van Halen ("Beat It") and top producers Quincy Jones and Teddy Riley-great songs, great performers, great moments in pop history when Michael Jackson truly was Invincible. -David Trueman.

Review Mule Variations / Tom Waits:Seven years passed between the release of Bone Machine and Mule Variations. During that time Tom Waits eschewed cutting another "conventional" (the term used loosely here) song collection, occupying his time with acting projects, a soundtrack (Night on Earth), a stage project (The Black Rider), and sundry smaller diversions. What's surprising about Mule Variations is how little he's strayed from the old Bone yard through the years. As with his Grammy-winning 1992 outing, Waits intersperses the tough and the tender, mixing exercises in creative noisemaking with tunes that fall on just the right side of maudlin. As with Bone Machine's "The Ocean Doesn't Want Me", "What's He Building?" is an experiment in word jazz that owes a debt to its creator, Ken Nordine. Waits has again assembled a crew of attuned sidemen (including Primus and steadfast backers Ralph Carney, Larry Taylor, and Joe Gore). And, as always, Waits and his wife-co-songwriter-co-producer Kathleen Brennan exhibit an uncanny ear for the arcane. In the end, Mule Variations is the aural equivalent of a salvage shop that, while largely familiar, still has a few secluded chambers and trap doors. -Steven Stolder.

Review Graceland / Paul Simon:The melding of South African styles and Simon's trademark sensibility made for one of the most intriguing albums-not to mention commercial hits-of the 1980s. At once lively, thoughtful, gorgeous, and tough, Graceland acknowledges splits both in South Africa's social fabric and in Simon's personal life (the title track is a clear descendant of the earlier "Hearts and Bones", a song about the singer- songwriter's brief marriage to Carrie Fisher). Humour is hardly absent from the mix, though; witness the addled "I Know What I Know" and the fable-like "You Can Call Me Al". -Rickey Wright.

Review Heliocentric / Paul Weller:It's a curious dichotomy: long one of rock's most literate songwriters, Paul Weller's always been at his best when it sounds like he's just knocked a song out. Whether with the Jam, the Style Council, or on his own, the Modfather's most pleasing tunes are his most natural. Think "In the City", think "You're The Best Thing", think "Wild Wood" or "Uh Huh Oh Yeh" or "Into Tomorrow"-and try not to think too much about the times when it sounds like he's been crafting a song for ages. That's the biggest problem with Heliocentric, a (don't say it!) ambitious album that features string arrangements by Robert Kirby (who has also worked with Nick Drake, the Strawbs and Elton John) and a drum solo (the horror!) on "Picking Up Sticks". That's not to say that there's not a lot to like on the album-there is, particularly the slow-burn tenderness of "Dust and Rocks" and the back-to-basics love song "Sweet Pea, My Sweet Pea". On Wild Wood, Weller asked "Has My Fire Really Gone Out"?; on Heliocentric, he shows that it still burns, just not as bright. -Randy Silver.
