Review Days Like This / Van Morrison:

In an era when most old rock stars are left to recycle their greatest hits for megatours and MTV Unplugged, it's refreshing to know that Van Morrison still pours on all the originality and wit he had when he made Moondance. On Days Like This, Morrison continues his lifelong exploration of the human psyche, offering up highly entertaining and danceable (yes, danceable!) tunes about everything from love to manic depression. As always, Morrison's vocals rumble along through intelligent lyrics, ploughing up a range of emotions almost too numerous to catalogue. Needless to say, the sweet, soulful harmonies of Morrison's adroit backup singers and Pee Wee Ellis's fabulous horn arrangements serve as fabulous counterpoints to Van the Man's energetic and pointed performances. When all is said and done Morrison sums it up best in "Songwriter", a self-effacing ditty about the job he has done, and still does, so very well. -L A Smith.

Review Guilty: 30 Years of Randy Newman / Randy Newman:

Randy Newman's three-decades-plus career proves at least one thing: an articulate, bespectacled fellow seated at a piano-a Southern Californian, no less!-can be damn dangerous. In a civil sort of way. This four-disc overview of Newman's fitful but ultimately brilliant career offers a portal into Newman the solo artist, the film composer, and the for-hire songwriter. Discs 1 and 2 (for old fans, the least rewarding of the lot) serve as a greatest hits package-greatest hits being a relative term ("Short People", "I Love L. A. ", "Mama Told Me Not to Come" and a few others qualify as commercial successes). Newman's trademark style-mouthing the skewed views of twisted protagonists (including God and Satan)-surfaces in songs old and new. The guardian of an obese boy who puts his charge to work as a freak narrates "Davy the Fat Boy". "Let's Burn Down the Cornfield", "Suzanne" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" explore perversion; "Rednecks" and "Sail Away" deal with bigotry; "Real Emotional Girl" and "I Want You to Hurt Like I Do" explore wanton cruelty. Disc 3 is littered with fascinating flotsam, beginning with 1962's bewilderingly boyish "Golden Gridiron Boy" (co-produced by Pat Boone!) and tailing into a slew of brooding but truly extraordinary solo demos. [+]
Despite his sardonic nature, the Newman of "Gainesville". "Feels Like Home". and "My Name Is James" summons true pathos. Disc 4 samples nine Newman soundtracks, including the orchestral scores to Ragtime, The Natural ("heromuzik", opines the composer), and Toy Story. Guilty is an appreciation of an artist who defies admiration. Here, however, the evidence is overwhelming. -Steven Stolder.

Review No Guru No Method No Teacher / Van Morrison:

Long-time Van Morrison fans may prefer the Belfast bard's tougher, emphatically R&B-driven work, yet it's his lusher, mid-1980s output that helped him consolidate the scrappy gains made in the prior decades. The once-heightened polarity between the earthy and the ethereal seemed muted on albums that traded in a softer-focus, romantic mysticism mirrored by the expanded scale of Morrison's band and arrangements, and left room for him to dabble in instrumental compositions or his renewed love of sax and piano. No Method, No Guru, No Teacher proves among the more durable, convincing chapters in this era, carrying a now-familiar array of symbolic touchstones (the Celtic legacy of "Tir Na Nog" or an extended instrumental allusion to a hymn set to William Blake's musings on England) and offering two of Morrison's better meditations on redemption, "In the Garden" and "A Town Called Paradise", which echoes the fevered waltz-time trance of "Astral Weeks" itself. -Sam Sutherland.

Review Riding With the King [DVD AUDIO] / B.B. King & Eric Clapton:

Eric Clapton and B. B. King first recorded together for one track on King's 1997 album Deuces Wild, an experience so satisfying that they decided they'd better do it again. Before long, Clapton announced on US television that one of his remaining ambitions was to make an entire album with King. Roping in producer Simon Climie, who had been such an integral part of Clapton's hugely successful Pilgrim album, the pair hunkered down in Los Angeles and set to work rejuvenating and re-interpreting a bunch of King's classics including "Ten Long Years", "Three O'Clock Blues", "Help The Poor" and "Days Of Old". They also take on a bunch of other goodies including a slow, bluesey reading of Sam & Dave's "Hold On I'm Coming" and, appropriately enough, a witty take on John Hiatt's "Riding With The King". They reach back to 1946 for the Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and even dip into the 1930s to resurrect Big Bill Broonzy's "Keys To The Highway", where their trading of tasty acoustic licks is a particular joy. Throughout Riding With The King, Climie has kept the production admirably simple, with King's voice and guitar in one stereo channel while Clapton's is in the other, helping create a vital intimacy, as if they're playing across a small room to each other. -Johnny Black.

Review Keep the Faith / Bon Jovi:

Four years on from New Jersey, Bon Jovi re-emerged with stern expressions, short hair and outfits noticeably lacking on the sequinned codpiece front. New Jersey had hinted that Jon Bon Jovi wished to be taken seriously-as seriously as Bruce Springsteen, for example-and Keep The Faith confirms this suspicion. However, while Springsteen has been able to redeem himself for his occasional buffooneries with an innate self-conscious modesty, Jon Bon Jovi's career has been characterised by a failure to get to grips with his own absurdity-this, remember, is the man who sang "I've seen a million faces/And I've rocked them all" without so much as smirking. This is why the songs on Keep The Faith where Bon Jovi attempt profundity-like the interminable, point-free "Dry Country"-are virtually unlistenable, and why such ear candy as "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" and "Bed Of Roses" is harmlessly beguiling. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Liverpool Sound Collage / Paul McCartney:

Instigated at the request of artist Peter Blake (sleeve designer of the Sgt Pepper album) for use as a soundtrack to his "About Collage" exhibition at the Tate on Merseyside, Liverpool Sound Collage is an unlikely cut & paste, dub-cum-ambient collaboration between Sir Paul McCartney, studio supremo Youth and Cian Ciaran of the Super Furry Animals. Refreshingly deviant in a manner even Plastic Ono-era Lennon would have approved of, this mad platter of tangled audio spaghetti successfully unravels on the (Mersey) Beta Band/Brothers In Sound-style jumble-sale rock experiment of "Free Now" (apparently crafted from snippets of old Beatles outtakes), while "Made Up" is McCartney's baffling splice and loop montage of Liverpudlian street-banter, traffic-noise, snippets of his own Liverpool Oratorio and genuine archival studio chit-chat from The Fab Four ("Hang on, John's just broken a string"). Liverpool Sound Collage is hit-free and delightfully unhinged. -Kevin Maidment.
