Review Frank's Wild Years / Tom Waits:All the voices in Tom Waits' head come out on this album: the growler (of course), the crooner, the preacher, the screecher, and the Vegas cheese ball. The instrumentation is equally eclectic. (Yep, that's Waits himself playing the "rooster" on the album's best song, "I'll Be Gone". ) More memorable moments: "Innocent When You Dream" (both times), the vocal howling at the end of "Blow Wind Blow", and the lovely coughing fit after "I'll Take New York. " Frank's Wild Years is the musical remains of a theatrical collaboration between Waits and Kathleen Brennan, originally staged in 1986. It contains nuggets of important practical advice, sure-"never drive a car when you're dead" (from "Telephone Call from Istanbul")-but mostly these songs are fantasy freaks. Frank's is big-time dreamer. It's a dreamy album. Sweet dreams. -Dan Leone.

Review Back To Front / Lionel Richie:Lionel's decision to release a second hits compilation within a decade may have had something to do with the fact that sales of the first were overshadowed by a spousal abuse charge; unsurprisingly then, there isn't too much to distinguish this from the other one. Certain critics have commended Lionel for having spurned the whims of fashion and persisted with sentimental love songs like "Say You Say Me" and "Penny Lover", whatever the weather, and, listening to the tacky 1980s synths of the more upbeat "Running With The Night", it's hard to disagree. Lionel's obviously at his most comfortable with the power ballad-so much so that he has no idea when to exercise a little restraint. For all its baggage-the sickly video with that blind girl and its terrible lyrics-there's the chord structure to a good Charles Aznavour song trying to get out of "Hello", but it's drowning in syrup. Perhaps it's time for a reunion of the old band: the inclusion of "Sail On", "Three Times A Lady" and "Easy" (all Commodores songs) suggests as much. -Peter Paphides.

Review Moondance / Van Morrison:Van Morrison went a long way towards defining his wild Irish heart with his first two classic albums: the brooding, introspective Astral Weeks and the expansive, swinging Moondance. If the first was the work of a poet, its sequel was the statement of a musician and bandleader. Moondance is that rare rock album where the band has buffed the arrangements to perfection and where the sax solos instead of the guitar. The band puts out a jazzy shuffle on "Moondance" and plays it soulful on "These Dreams of You". The album includes both Morrison's most romantic ballad ("Crazy Love") and his most haunting ("Into the Mystic"). "And It Stoned Me" rolled off Morrison's tongue like a favourite fable, while "Caravan" told a tale full of emotional intrigue. Moondance stood out in the rock world of 1970 like a grown-up in a kiddie matinee. -John Milward.

Review Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits / Lenny Kravitz:More prolific than D'Angelo and Terence Trent D'Arby combined, one-man rock & soul revivalist Lenny Kravitz kept traditional pop values alive through much of the 1990s. From the Motown-perfect "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" to the Beatlesque "Let Love Rule", Kravitz has always inhabited his influences with a genuine spirit that transcends imitation. The 15 tracks found on Greatest Hits provide a surprisingly coherent reminder of just how much the artist has accomplished in a relatively short time. And even if "Are You Gonna Go My Way" falls short of its Hendrix target, Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" still rocks in a pleasingly Neanderthal way. An infectious new cut, "Again", fits neatly alongside sturdy Kravitz originals like "Fly Away", "Mr. Cab Driver" and "Black Velveteen", showcasing a talent whose post-modern pop should play well into the new century. -Bill Forman.

Review Heartattack and Vine / Tom Waits:Tom Waits's hipster persona began to evaporate at the beginning of the 1980s, but not before he released the transitional- but eminently worthwhile-Heartattack and Vine, which contained "On the Nickel", a Dickensian tale of street life, and "Jersey Girl," a song Bruce Springsteen gave a far wider airing to on his Live 1975-1985 box set. You can hear hints of Waits's style growing more trenchant on songs like "Downtown" and the stark, bluesy title track, which contains the immortal line "Don't you know there ain't no devil / That's just God when he's drunk. " Indeed. -Daniel Durchholz.

Review Escape / Enrique Iglesias:If Ricky Martin is the party boy of Latin crossover pop, Enrique Iglesias is a romantic traditionalist in the mould of his dad. On Escape, even his up-tempo, lust-driven tunes such as "Love 4 Fun" and "One Night Stand" are hardly the frantic sweat-fests Martin provides. Escape, Iglesias' first disc since his 1999 Top 40 breakthrough, is already a guaranteed success thanks to its first single "Hero". Title aside, this gooey love song isn't really fitting for its adopted purpose as a post-terror anthem ("You can take my breath away"), but one imagines that won't make much difference. Iglesias is at his best when playing a little sly, like when he appropriates Nelly's "E. I. " chant on "Don't Turn Off the Lights" or makes a barely veiled suggestion of what he really likes about you in the opening lines of "She Be the One. " -Rickey Wright.

Review Slippery When Wet / Bon Jovi:Slippery When Wet transformed Bon Jovi from minor league poodle rockers to global superstars, on the back of hit singles "You Give Love A Bad Name", "Never Say Goodbye" and, of course, "Living On A Prayer". It's easy to forget, now that Jon is a film star with a decent haircut and an ever-improving line in blue-collar Springsteen-lite lyrics, quite how silly Bon Jovi were back in the mid-to-late 80s. From the scantily clad carwash girls on the inner sleeve to the "You lost more than that in my back seat. Yeah!" lyrics, the album is blissfully untouched by notions of irony or subtlety. Fortunately, this adds to its charm. With guitarist Richie Sambora and Desmond Child (who has written for and with everyone from Cher to Robbie Williams), Jon Bon Jovi has now produced more than 10 years worth of consistently memorable tunes, and this album contains its fair share of them. Slippery When Wet won't change your world, but it will, undoubtedly, rock it. -Ronita Dutta.

Review Stanley Road / Paul Weller:This album has class and it sees Paul Weller once again firmly in control of every aspect: he wrote all the songs bar a cover of Dr. John's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters"; he co-produced it and, apart from his earthy vocals, he plays guitar, piano, organ and percussion. All the tracks are special, but it's the three hits-"Changingman", "Broken Stones" and the truly wonderful "You Do Something To Me"-that really stand out, as does "Porcelain Gods", which has something of the old Style Council about it. Soulful, the style is underlined by Carleen Anderson's rich backing vocals on five of the tracks. Weller is also joined by some of his other musical chums: Noel Gallagher, Steve Craddock and Steve Winwood. -Carina Trimingham.

Review Blue Valentine / Tom Waits:More hard-boiled tales from Tom Waits, who manages to sing lines like "Everyone I know is either dead or in prison" in a raw, whiskey-soaked rasp that sounds both comical and deadly serious. Waits doesn't break any new creative ground here but continues to refine his down-and-out persona. It's booze and broads, sex and violence, laughs and heartbreak. This 1978 album opens with an astonishingly desperate version of "Somewhere" (from "West Side Story"), performed like Louie Armstrong with a migraine. From there it's the usual Waits mix of crackpot wordplay and the cocktail lounge jazz likes of "Romeo Is Bleeding". -Steve Appleford.

Review Nighthawks At The Diner / Tom Waits:As tour guide on a trip through the midnight-to-dawn streets of Los Angeles that the beautiful people never see through the smoked- glass windows of their limos, Waits details the lives of hipsters, down-and-outers, and lost causes in latter-day beat poetry and small- jazz-combo arrangements. This live album from 1975 almost has the quality of standup comedy, but the routines are richer and more carefully drawn. Check out the vivid detail, low humor, and hooker- with-a-heart-of-gold emotionalism Waits brings to songs such as "Nighthawk Postcards", "Putnam County", and a memorable reading of trucker poet Red Sovine's "Big Joe and Phantom 309". -Daniel Durchholz.

Review Eric Clapton Unplugged / Eric Clapton:Clapton caught the "unplugged" trend just at the right time, when the public was hungry to hear how well rock stars and their material could hold up when stripped of elaborate production values. Clapton himself seemed baffled by the phenomenon, especially when picking up the armload of Grammys Unplugged earned him, including Record and Song of the Year for "Tears in Heaven", the heart-rending elegy to his young son, Conor. That song and a reworked version of "Layla" got most of the attention, but the rest of the album has fine versions of acoustic blues numbers such as "Malted Milk", "Rollin' & Tumblin' and "Before You Accuse Me" that make it worth investigating further. -Daniel Durchholz.
