Review The Essential Neil Diamond / Neil Diamond:

Neil Diamond is one of a rare breed. As a songwriter, his music has been covered successfully by artists as diverse as the Monkees, Deep Purple, UB40, and Smash Mouth. But Diamond used that three-chord alchemy to build an unparalleled career as a performer as well. The 38 tracks on these two discs address those interlocking legacies in the most comprehensive manner yet, gathering his material from Bang! Records (including such pop staples as "Solitary Man," "Cherry, Cherry," "Kentucky Woman," "Red, Red Wine," and "I'm a Believer"), Universal (highlighted by "Sweet Caroline," Song Sung Blue," "Holly Holy," and "I Am. I Said"), and Columbia for the first time. And if Diamond has veered toward the middle of the road on those latter recordings (such as "September Morn," "Heartlight," and the Streisand duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers"), there remains a remarkable consistency throughout his work. As if to underscore the point, a number of mid-period hits (including "Shiloh," "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show," and "Soolaimon") are featured as live recordings from fall 2001. These performances show that the sweet roughness of his voice has only grown in power and drama; it's small wonder that Diamond remains one of the top live draws in the business. [+]
Even if it overlooks Diamond's unlikely late-'90s hit country album (Tennessee Moon), this set manages to be both concise and thorough, the best introduction yet to an American music legend. -Jerry McCulley.

Review New Jersey / Bon Jovi:

In common with many bands who finally get what they always wanted-in Bon Jovi's case, thanks to Slippery When Wet, the sort of world domination normally only dreamt of by demented European dictators and Bond villains-Bon Jovi decided that they didn't really want it. Though New Jersey contains several stereotypically Jovi stadium anthems, such as the single "Bad Medicine", and though the videos showed that the intricately layered and feathered coiffures were intact, this is the album where Bon Jovi began changing. The title offers a broad hint as to what Jon Bon Jovi in particular was trying to change into-short of renaming the album I Come From The Same Place As Bruce Springsteen, he could scarcely have been more obvious about it. "Living In Sin", indeed, takes Bon Jovi's increasing obsession with Springsteen to the verge of pastiche. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Phil Collins : Hits / Phil Collins:

For better or worse, Phil Collins's "In the Air Tonight" was the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 1980s, winning radio stations' listener polls and even lending its designer threat to an episode of Miami Vice. Hits recalls the days when the Collins name on a disc ensured its immediate embrace by programmers and the public. How you feel about these songs will depend on how you felt about them then; despite the undeniable niceness of "Take Me Home" and "One More Night", they're unlikely to win over anyone who didn't adore them to begin with. Those who cared, though, will no doubt be gladdened to find most of Collins's biggest tunes together on one disc. -Rickey Wright.

Review Off the Wall: Remastered / Michael Jackson:

Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums-Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980)-which the twentysomething phenomenon made with his brothers. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall defined how much Michael might do. Tracks such as "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", "Rock with You", "Burn this Disco Out" and the title track not only consolidated his dancefloor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on up-tempo material. Artistic role models such as James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. The addition of pure pop confection-Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend", Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It"-further fleshed out the star's young-adult persona and helped make Off the Wall among the most fondly remembered of all his solo work. This "special edition" features two magic home demos and entertaining, insightful interviews with producer Quincy Jones and "Rock with You" composer Rod Temperton. -Rickey Wright.

Review Crush / Bon Jovi:

The growling, choppy guitar sample that opens the first track here, "It's My Life", is a virtual declaration of intent for the first Bon Jovi album in five years, a statement that they're updating the sound without abandoning the traditional virtues that made them one of the biggest bands on the planet. So make way for a hi-tech parade of smooth-but-gutsy rock anthems, almost any one of which will gladden the heart of every AOR radio programmer in the land. Unless the world has changed irredeemably, cuts such as the mid-paced heartbreak chugger "Say It Isn't So" are destined to become Bon Jovi standards, while an outbreak of scarf-waving and lighter-flicking is certain to accompany any live performance of the big weepy, "Thank You For Loving Me". Arguably, everything on Crush is done by the numbers, but with consummate pros like Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora at the helm, these are the kind of numbers you have to take seriously, because by the second time they kick into the chorus of any song it's damn near impossible not to sing along. -Johnny Black.

Review The Jazz Singer: Original Soundtrack / Neil Diamond:

It may now be hard to believe but there once was a time when Neil Diamond was considered not only big enough to open a movie but to get Sir Laurence Olivier to co-star in said movie. While the movie itself was less than a rousing success, the soundtrack was a smash-though, contrary to the title, it does not find the Elvis of soft-rock taking up jazz. Playing the part of a young Jewish cantor who follows his heart to play, well, a Neil Diamond-esque blend of R&B and rock, Diamond finds excuses to throw in some soulful singles ("Love on the Rocks" and "Hello Again"), a fluffy, uptempo slice of Stephen Foster-Americana ("On the Robert E Lee") and a topical song ("America"); padding out the soundtrack are the film-specific Jewish hymns "Adon Olam" and "Kol Nidre". Eternally consigned to a limbo between being remembered for his better moments (Live at the Greek, writing some of the Monkees' biggest hits) and for the tawdry ones ("Turn on Your Heartlight", inspired by E. T. ), The Jazz Singer remains one of Diamond's best albums. -Randy Silver.

Review Slippery When Wet / Bon Jovi:

Slippery When Wet transformed Bon Jovi from minor league poodle rockers to global superstars, on the back of hit singles "You Give Love A Bad Name", "Never Say Goodbye" and, of course, "Living On A Prayer". It's easy to forget, now that Jon is a film star with a decent haircut and an ever-improving line in blue-collar Springsteen-lite lyrics, quite how silly Bon Jovi were back in the mid-to-late 80s. From the scantily clad carwash girls on the inner sleeve to the "You lost more than that in my back seat. Yeah!" lyrics, the album is blissfully untouched by notions of irony or subtlety. Fortunately, this adds to its charm. With guitarist Richie Sambora and Desmond Child (who has written for and with everyone from Cher to Robbie Williams), Jon Bon Jovi has now produced more than 10 years worth of consistently memorable tunes, and this album contains its fair share of them. Slippery When Wet won't change your world, but it will, undoubtedly, rock it. -Ronita Dutta.

Review Modern Classics - The Greatest Hits / Paul Weller:

After making his name with the Jam and then nearly losing it (in some quarters) with the Style Council, Paul Weller reemerged in 1992 with a self-titled album. Since then he's released four studio albums (and one live set, Live Wood); Modern Classics is a democratic collection, choosing three tracks from Paul Weller, four tracks from each of the rest, and adding one new single, "Brand New Start", for good measure. There's not a loser in the lot, but the remarkable thing to note here is the coherence of this collection: Weller's mature rock and love of classic soul has resulted in a sound that's remained remarkably consistent over the course of the 1990s. There's plenty more that could've been included-his cover of "Sexy Sadie" and the touching "Has My Fire Really Gone Out?" just for starters-which simply means there are plenty of reasons to mine his catalog after Modern Classics whets your appetite. -Randy Silver.

Review The Essential Bob Dylan / Bob Dylan:

The two discs of The Essential Bob Dylan don't exactly provide a thorough overview of four decades of recording by one of the most important and prolific performers of his time. So the collection definitely skates over his leagues-deep oeuvre, summarizing his monumental first half-dozen years in disc one and skirting over the following 34 years in disc two. Delving into Columbia's three Dylan greatest-hits packages, Essential offers only a few surprises, opting for The Basement Tapes version of "Quinn The Eskimo" over the Self Portrait remake that made it onto Greatest Hits Volume II and tossing in "Things Have Changed" from the Wonder Boys soundtrack for completists. But this overview is designed with newcomers, not Dylan-ologists, in mind. -Steven Stolder.

Review Keep The Faith / Bon Jovi:

Four years on from New Jersey, Bon Jovi re-emerged with stern expressions, short hair and outfits noticeably lacking on the sequinned codpiece front. New Jersey had hinted that Jon Bon Jovi wished to be taken seriously-as seriously as Bruce Springsteen, for example-and Keep The Faith confirms this suspicion. However, while Springsteen has been able to redeem himself for his occasional buffooneries with an innate self-conscious modesty, Jon Bon Jovi's career has been characterised by a failure to get to grips with his own absurdity-this, remember, is the man who sang "I've seen a million faces/And I've rocked them all" without so much as smirking. This is why the songs on Keep The Faith where Bon Jovi attempt profundity-like the interminable, point-free "Dry Country"-are virtually unlistenable, and why such ear candy as "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" and "Bed Of Roses" is harmlessly beguiling. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Neil Diamond: The Greatest Hits 1966-1992 / Neil Diamond:

Though now known mainly for his middle-of-the-road balladry, Neil Diamond started his career in the '60s as a Tin Pan Alley pro who turned out a string of ballsy, folk-rock-styled classic Top 40 singles that may come as a surprise to anyone who's grown up with the image of Diamond as a sensitive crooner and Vegas showman. This 2 CD set contains all of his hits, but it isn't quite the definitive package that its title suggests. His early Bang singles ("Cherry, Cherry," "Kentucky Woman," "Solitary Man") and his later Columbia material ("You Don't Bring Me Flowers," "America," "Heartlight") appear in their original versions. But his mid-period MCA/UNI hits ("Sweet Caroline," "Song Sung Blue," "I Am. I Said") are represented by live re-recordings from 1989 and 1992. -Scott Schinder.

Review White Ladder / David Gray:

A major artist in Ireland, David Gray has a loyal but somewhat smaller following throughout the rest of the world. Since his 1994 debut album A Century Ends, he has consistently produced quality, folk-tinged songs that showcase his one major talent-a raw yet melodic voice. White Ladder marks something of a departure from his usual fare, as it sees him embracing a more modern sound, adding interesting beats and electronic sounds to the more traditional acoustic guitar and piano. In trying to widen his appeal, he risks alienating his fan base, but tracks like "This Year's Love" and "My Oh My" should keep everybody happy. -Helen Marquis.
