Review Live / Roxy Music:

While a new Roxy Music studio album remains a tantalising pipe dream for persons of a certain age, Live-featuring 22 sonically-consummate tracks recorded in 16 plushly-upholstered auditoriums, from Stuttgart to Adelaide via Vancouver-proves to be just the ticket for the luckless majority who missed the band's much-feted 2001 reunion world tour. When the news filtered out from the Strand in London that Roxy (Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera and Paul Thompson but, alas, no Brian Eno) were reconvening, headshaking sceptics anticipated a perfunctory nostalgia trip by superannuated globetrotters looking to increase their off-shore equity holdings. How wrong they were. While Live is consummately professional and exhibits an enviable attention to detail (Lucy Wilkins supplants Eddie Jobson's violin virtuosity on "Out of the Blue" and there are even revving motorbike noises on "Virginia Plain") it is far from clinically sterile. The grand old godfathers of glam still manage to stoke up a fire behind the likes of "Remake Remodel" and Brian Ferry continues to sing with all the sensory shudder of a man either handling a poisonous spider or having his back scratched by some delectable supermodel. Their influence is still palpable-Suede, for example, must have rewritten "Street Life" three times over. Pretty much everything on Live-from the art-rock chic of the early years to the urbane charisma of "Avalon"-sounds as topically fresh as today's edition of the six o'clock news. -Kevin Maidment.

Review MTV Unplugged v2.0 / Dashboard Confessional:

The MTV Unplugged concept was probably invented with someone like Florida singer-songwriter Chris Carrabba (aka Dashboard Confessional) in mind. Carrabba's relentlessly sad, impossibly frail acoustic songs-which effectively spawned the emo-core genre-have given alienated, cardigan-wearing guys and gals a snappy soundtrack to their pain. Dropping the heavily-inked guitarist amid his flock captures both the intimacy and awkwardness propelling Dashboard Confessional's best songs. Indeed, whether Carrabba is flying solo or is joined by a band, his MTV Unplugged-presented as a CD with an accompanying DVD-ranks as one of the most interactive sets ever; the fans know every single word to every single song and they sing their hearts out, sometimes completely hijacking the choruses. From opening number "Swiss Army Romance" through to "Screaming Infidelities", the assembled holler themselves hoarse in a glassy-eyed solidarity that would be eerie if it weren't so sweet. The sing-along aspect might be a drawback for fans searching for pristine live versions of studio recordings, but then again, Dashboard Confessional's music is nothing if not communal. -Kim Hughes.

Review Greatest Stories-Live / Harry Chapin:

"Stories" is the operative word here. The late Harry Chapin penned tales that touched a chord in listeners regardless of their age, background or, truth be told, even of the type of music they normally listened to. Chapin always came across as a tough guy with a heart of gold, a brainy type who wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty-much like the protagonist of "Taxi" (a terrific rendition of which is contained herein). In addition to radio staples like "Cat's in the Cradle", the 1976 recording also sheds light on slightly lesser-known pieces like "Circle" and "Mr. Tanner". Chapin's affable manner shines through the entire album, giving it a disarming quality that's not always present on the studio versions. -David Sprague.

Review Dream Letter - Live In London 1968 / Tim Buckley:

It's been said that Tim Buckley was the most powerful singer of his generation. Even if that appraisal forgets Bob Dylan, the live set Dream Letter makes a hell of a defence. At the very least, his voice could do things few could: it soared beyond any familiar register and held notes long past the breaking point. He learned from jazz vocalists such as Sarah Vaughn, but he put technical prowess into the service of a strange, trance-like state. On this evening, before a hushed, receptive audience, he seemed to be composing visionary poetry with every vocal surge. Creating an Astral Weeks-like sound, his band included Lee Underwood on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and Danny Thompson on bass. They follow his every subtle and explosive turn with effortless energy. -Ray Francis Kasten.
