Review Live Monsters [CASSETTE] / Big Head Todd & the Monsters:Few modern rockers have managed to capture the ephemeral combination of sloppy and serious that earmarked the Band in its prime. That vibe-sounding four-beers casual during a soberly determined performance-accounts for the success of bluesy Big Head Todd & The Monsters; this Boulder, Colorado, group's jammy mix is simultaneously dirty and clean, offhanded and acute, backwoods and scholarly. It's nothing new, as these so-so concert-tracked numbers attest. But there's something there in the performance, a faint glimmer of bygone Band brilliance, that breathes life into pedestrian BHT standards such as "Tangerine," "It's Alright," and the breakthrough hit "Bittersweet. " The crowd dutifully goes wild over every muddled note, however, picking up on that sloppy/serious thing more immediately in the flesh. As a live document, even a case for fame, Live Monsters will leave many scratching their befuddled noggins. Why these guys? And did we remember to turn the porch light on before we left for the show tonight? There are no clear-cut answers. Just a lot of jamming and that weird vintage vibe. -Tom Lanham.

Review Paintin' the Town Brown: Ween Live '90-'98 [CASSETTE] / Ween:Ween is often dismissed as a novelty band, but those who stoop to such judgments should check out this shaggy document of Gene and Dean bringing it to the people. Paintin' the Town Brown captures the brothers Ween in their early days playing to DAT accompaniment through their full band stints. The strongest cuts on this release come from their 1996 country tour; backed by a crackerjack band of Nashville studio legends, Ween saddles traditional honky-tonk with politically incorrect lyrics and the whole package seems to make a lot of sense. Longtime fans will be thrilled at the inclusion of obscure Ween cuts like "Mountain Dew," "Vallejo," and "Ode to Rene. " Casual fans will have a hard time with disc two, a spotlight on Ween's overindulgent Boredoms-like jams. Still, it's hard not to admire a band that tackles French cabaret music, Middle Eastern drones, funk, punk, and demented children's music. -Jason Josephes.

Review Live at Leeds [CASSETTE] / The Who:Anyone who owned the vinyl copy of Live at Leeds will barely recognise its digitised namesake. While the 1970 record offered a mere six selections, the 1995 CD reissue is fleshed out with a full 14 tracks. Revelling in the augmented Leeds prompts one to wonder why in the name of "Heaven and Hell" they didn't put out a double record in the first place. No matter. This Live at Leeds is actually superior to its revered predecessor. The Who are at their Maximum R&B peak here, bringing an almost proto-metal aggression to supercharged covers of "Young Man Blues", "Summertime Blues", and "Shakin' All Over" (all from the original record) and treating fans to originals familiar ("I Can't Explain", "My Generation", "Magic Bus") and less known ("Heaven and Hell", "Tattoo", "A Quick One"). An improved-upon classic. -Steven Stolder There are only a handful of genuinely seminal albums, but The Who's Live At Leeds is undoubtedly one. Recorded in the comparatively intimate environs of the University Refectory, Leeds, in February 1970, the two-hour-plus show was heavily truncated and clocked in at a mere 38 minutes upon it's release as an album later the same year. Despite this, the album's six tracks showcased the thermonuclear dynamics that established The Who as the best live rock band in the world. [+]
This long overdue deluxe edition features the entire 33 song set, including the bulk of rock opera Tommy, plus full-length versions of previously lopped cuts. Throughout the proceedings, The Who's blitzkrieg barrage is propelled by the octopus limbed Keith Moon-the-loon and John Entwistle's elasticated, DC10-booming bass, topped with Pete Townsend's tumultuous windmilled power chords and Roger Daltrey's howl. Such is the potency of their attack that they even invest those hoary standards "Summertime Blues" and "Shakin' All Over" with a thrilling savagery, while their rampant charge through Tommy reminds you that the original 1969 double-album-unlike Ken Russell's ridiculously excessive film version-was an audacious attempt to tinker with rock's building blocks. -Chris King Anyone who owned the vinyl copy of Live at Leeds will barely recognize its digitized namesake. While the 1970 record offered a mere six selections, the 1995 CD reissue is fleshed out with a full 14 tracks. Review Live on Two Legs [CASSETTE] / Pearl Jam:Seventy-one minutes of live Pearl Jam plus an unreleased song? It's aural nirvana for fans of the reclusive, integrity-driven Seattle quintet. Pearl Jam are nothing if not passionate and unabashedly rocking, and this 16-track offering, recorded during their Yield tour, illustrates why the mumbly voiced rock deity and his band of merry men inspire such ardor in their followers. Eddie Vedder's emotive vocals, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard's raw and raging fretwork and edgy, catchy, whisper-to-a-scream dynamics are deftly and inspiringly captured. Though a few staples (including "Jeremy") are missing, songs running the gamut of the band's seven-year career-from "Corduroy" to "Nothingman" to the Neil Young-penned "F*ckin' Up"-more than make up for any exclusions. The breadth and scope found on Live on Two Legs (a take on the Queen song, "Death on Two Legs"?) proves the once über-"alternative" Pearl Jam have struck a loud chord in the mainstream. and that's not a bad thing. -Katherine Turman.
