Review The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964: Concert At Philharmonic Hall / Bob Dylan:The Bootleg Series, Volume 6 is Dylan as an eager-to-please 23- year-old with nothing between him and his worshippers but a guitar, a harmonica, and four songs; and his lover Joan Baez. In marked contrast to the acerbic electric Dylan of the mid-60s and the tight-lipped living legend of the mid-70s, here is Dylan as the entertainer. Joking and bantering with the crowd, he deals up some favourites ("The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), but is already shedding his earnest folkie persona; imagine another artist a mere two years into his career declining to perform a hit on the scale of "Blowin' in the Wind". Having completed the all-acoustic collection of his early years three months before the Philharmonic concert, he would record the half-electric/half-acoustic Bringing It All Back Home three months later. Three of the four acoustic songs from that album are presented here, as are a handful of then-unreleased songs, including "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues", "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" (which was soon given a rock arrangement), and a protest-period remnant, "Who Killed Davey Moore?" Had this album appeared the year it was recorded, it would be seen as a respite for folk fans to catch their collective breath before Dylan reappeared in his rock & roll Rimbaud guise. Heard for the first time decades later, it's simply a testament of his gifts as a showman and songwriter. -Steven Stolder.

Review Live Rust / Neil Young:Mere months passed between the release of Neil Young's mid-career milestone Rust Never Sleeps and this 1979 tour recording, which documents a late-'78 San Francisco performance. Indeed, Live Rust boasts four songs from the album that gave it its name. It's also sequenced in the same spirit as its studio sibling. As with Rust Never Sleeps, Live Rust opens with steady-flowing acoustic numbers before swirling into an electric vortex. What was side four of the original two-record version-"Like a Hurricane", "Hey, Hey, My, My", and "Tonight's the Night"-is arguably Young and Crazy Horse at their peak as a live unit, with all due respect to 1991's estimable Weld and 1997's desultory Year of the Horse. Few rock bands rank with Young and his stalwart electric trio, and Live Rust presents them in all their raging glory. -Steven Stolder.

Review The Corrs - MTV Unplugged / The Corrs:Recorded at Ardmore Studios outside Dublin in early October, the Corrs sound comfortably at home on this orchestrally-enhanced live acoustic gig. With only two studio albums to their credit, it may seem a bit early to go for an Unplugged re-run but the inclusion of two new Corrs-penned songs and a trio of previously unheard covers as well as the live greatest hits means there's something fresh to enjoy. An unplugged session also establishes clearly that The Corrs, in danger of being perceived as pop puppets, are a real band who play and sing beautifully and can deliver the goods live. Encouragingly, the two new songs, "Radio" and "At Your Side", are well up to the usual Corrs standard, while much of the already familiar material benefits from tasty orchestral arrangements-"What Can I Do" in particular works better than the dance re-mix hit version. -Johnny Black.

Review 1969: Live With Lou Reed, Vol.2 / Velvet Underground:It's the rarest of live albums whose songs add anything to the majesty of the original studio recordings. This one adds immeasurable data to the Velvet's story. Without 1969: Live we might never have known that they were more than just an art outfit, that they could actually rock with fury. Check out Reed's strumming on "What Goes On" if you want to have your mind blown. None of these staples of the V. U. catalogue can be truly known without hearing these fully formed, fleshed-out versions, so for history's sake alone we must treasure this. History's tragedy of course is that we get to hear the excruciatingly light applause-it sounds like there's only 10 people in the room at some points-after each course in ass kicking. They were wrongly under-appreciated in their time, and for this we must all pay forever by playing this record constantly. -Gene Booth.

Review Live at Knebworth / Robbie Williams:Robbie Williams Live at Knebworth is a lasting souvenir of the biggest ever live music event that the UK had ever seen, when in Summer 2003 some 375,000 people made their way to Knebworth to let Mr Williams entertain them. Recorded over the three nights, it doesn't contain the full two-hour set list and even dares to leave out some of the live favourites such as "Rock DJ" and "No Regrets", so doesn't quite count as a comprehensive "Best of". However, it does include the majority of his finest moments-from the full-on regular opening number "Let Me Entertain You", to the tingling hairs on the back of your neck-quality of "Angels" via such crowd pleasers as "Kids" and "Feel". As with all live albums, it's never going to sound as clean as the studio versions, and there are bum notes and unexpected ad-libs, but to their credit the compilers have kept the inter song banter to a minimum so the listener is spared most of the cheesy humility served up in abundance on the nights. For those that attended, this will be an essential purchase as a lasting souvenir of a memorable day. For anyone else, they'd probably be better off waiting for the proper best of that will no doubt come out eventually. -Melanie Wilkin.

Review Back in the World: Live / Paul McCartney:Back in the World is a collection of Paul McCartney's performances from his 2002 world tour. Critics may quibble over the creative roller coaster that's been Sir Paul's post-Beatles solo career, but few can deny his status as one of rock's most buoyant live performers and consistent crowd pleasers. That drive to stake his claim onstage (said to be one of the factors that drove the Fabs to dissolution) energises this otherwise largely backward-looking collection; fully two-thirds of the double-disc's 35 tracks hail from the Beatles catalogue, with the rest slanted toward early solo-career standouts such as "Jet", "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "My Love". But Macca and his focused backing quartet deliver them with a punchy edge and sense of abandon that's largely MIA on previous McCartney live releases. Other than pausing for tributes to his fallen comrades ("Here Today", a solo acoustic paean to John Lennon followed by a touching, ukulele-backed nod to George Harrison with "Something"), it's largely a rollicking career retrospective from a musician whose restless drive to perform invests this collection with something more than mere nostalgia. The singer who invoked Bach at 22 may still refuse to act his age, but here that's not a bad thing at all. -Jerry McCulley.
