Review 24 Nights: Eric Clapton Live / Eric Clapton:As revered elder rock statesman Clapton has edged towards the pop mainstream, his superlative guitar work has become increasingly less prominent on his albums. So, it's nice to have a solid showcase for his instrumental brilliance on the live 2-CD 24 Nights, which captures the highlights of an extended 1990-1991 run at London's Royal Albert Hall. The album finds Clapton performing Cream classics, solo hits, and blues standards in a variety of different band formats: with a stripped-down quartet, an expanded nine-piece, a stellar blues ensemble (including fellow axe heroes Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Jimmie Vaughan), and a full orchestra. The result is a fine showcase for the dazzling instrumental skills of one of rock's essential guitarists. -Scott Schinder.

Review The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964: Concert At Philharmonic Hall / Bob Dylan:The Bootleg Series, Volume 6 is Dylan as an eager-to-please 23- year-old with nothing between him and his worshippers but a guitar, a harmonica, and four songs; and his lover Joan Baez. In marked contrast to the acerbic electric Dylan of the mid-60s and the tight-lipped living legend of the mid-70s, here is Dylan as the entertainer. Joking and bantering with the crowd, he deals up some favourites ("The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), but is already shedding his earnest folkie persona; imagine another artist a mere two years into his career declining to perform a hit on the scale of "Blowin' in the Wind". Having completed the all-acoustic collection of his early years three months before the Philharmonic concert, he would record the half-electric/half-acoustic Bringing It All Back Home three months later. Three of the four acoustic songs from that album are presented here, as are a handful of then-unreleased songs, including "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues", "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" (which was soon given a rock arrangement), and a protest-period remnant, "Who Killed Davey Moore?" Had this album appeared the year it was recorded, it would be seen as a respite for folk fans to catch their collective breath before Dylan reappeared in his rock & roll Rimbaud guise. Heard for the first time decades later, it's simply a testament of his gifts as a showman and songwriter. -Steven Stolder.

Review Roseland NYC Live / Portishead:Re-working a selection of tracks from both Dummy and the eponymous follow up, PNYC demonstrates how the recorded can translate equally well into the live, given a little inspiration and creativity. Drawing on full string and horn sections and turntablist intervention from Andy Smith, they explore live soundtrack angles, lacing the original versions with measures of Lalo Schifrin, Barry Mancini et al. Although some may be sceptical at the lack of new material, they shouldn't be put off. As the neo-classical sounds of "Glory Box", post rock of "Sour Times", brazen brass jazz of "All Mine" and theremin-led hip hop of "Mysterons" all comfortably cohabit the same place, managing to re-work and re-charm their way into your sub conscious. PNYC is a class delivery from Portishead, from the arrangement and production to the performance and orchestration. -Found Sounds.

Review Mariah Carey Unplugged / Mariah Carey:By the time she made her bow on MTV Unplugged, Mariah Carey was already a multi-platinum-selling artist who owned the charts, but didn't command much respect because no one had ever seen her perform live. As it turned out, Miss Thing could deliver as sure as Domino's, emoting significantly over soulful arrangements of several hits and a cover of the Jackson Five's "I'll Be There. " That track became a No. 1 hit and earned a solo recording deal for featured backup singer Trey Lorenz. This may not be Carey's best record, but it's certainly her most surprising. -Daniel Durchholz.

Review Unplugged... and Seated / Rod Stewart:This low-key 1993 live retrospective marked something of a return to form for Rod the Mod, who for many years had more or less abdicated his position as a performer of consequence to pursue a more frivolous pop-star persona. With his former Faces bandmate Ron Wood in tow, Stewart revisits hits like "Hot Legs", "Tonight's the Night", and "Maggie May"-and more adventurous choices like Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and Tom Waits's "Tom Traubert's Blues"-with an effortless grace and a renewed expressiveness that makes Unplugged. And Seated a consistent pleasure. -Scott Schinder.

Review Mirrorball: Greatest Hits Live / Sarah McLachlan:Grafted from McLachlan's supremely satisfying 1998 performances, Mirrorball is drawn almost equally from Surfacing and its superior predecessor, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Live, a haunting ballad such as "Possession" becomes a fevered, aggressive bit of psychedelia. "Hold On" reveals new depths when performed behind the beat with morphing time signatures and driving piano. McLachlan's warmly expressive voice is still at the epicentre of her performances. She roams through these 14 songs with agile ease, riding the rails between singing for dramatic arena effect-huskily growling, airily trilling-and knowing what to play down with her sensually controlled crooning (witness such gems as Fumbling's title song and "Good Enough"). Overall, McLachlan's vocals match the heavily percussive intensity of her band and the build of her backing vocalists, producing a more spacious sound than the precise pitch rendered on her studio recordings. -Paige La Grone.
